    I have an atlas ho master silver series gp40 that I have no idea how to get into the trucks to clean the pickup contacts on

    • @joes2fst4umodelrr
      @joes2fst4umodelrr 27 днів тому

      Atlas can be a pain, so from what I know of those the trucks have a bottom cover over them that has 4 clips (2 on each side). Gently pry those up just a hint so they life over the clips, if you do it on one side usually you can just take the whole cover off without doing it on the other side. Once that cover is off the truck side frames slide offend you'll see the pickups that are on the axle ends. If you're not in a big hurry about it I'd be happy to make a video on it for you here in the next week or two.

    • @joes2fst4umodelrr
      @joes2fst4umodelrr Місяць тому

      Hello! Yes, they are. Depending on the locomotive you're working on, there will either be screws in the dcc kit for it or screws already in the frame of the locomotive you can use.

    How many drops of mega for a BLI train

    • @joes2fst4umodelrr
      @joes2fst4umodelrr Місяць тому

      So in UP 844, I'm putting about 6-10 drops in per stack. In the CN diesel, I'm using 10 drops. If you're unsure, start out with 5 drops. Do a quick, sharp blow, then add 2 more and another blow. If it looks too full (you see fluid at the top that won't go down) use the corner of a paper towel or napkin to soak up a little.

      Start with 6 to 8 drops, make sure to give it a good quick sharp blow inti the stack afterwards to get any air bubbles out. Then if you notice the smoke starting ti get less visible add another 6 or so drops.

    These are great kits. I do a couple of things differently. I use clear silicone to attach the weights, as I have had weights bust loose when using super glue. I pre tap the coupler and truck screw holes. I replace the wheelsets with metal wheelsets, which is just a preference of mine. The other tool in my arsenal is a chisel blade for the xacto knife. I also add weight to NMRA RP's. These are the new Athearn "Blue Box" kit!

I had some IHC locomotives with those goofy push in couplers, and I tried to buy a replacement with a knuckle on the end, but those were made by McHenry, and the plastic is poor quality on those. So glad to see a genuine Kadee replacement. Now, I can buy some IHC coaches and make those conversions.

    The top of my N-Scale layout is 2" XPS Foamboard, I want a river but it looks like I will have to carve it out of the 2" foamboard base, How deep do you think you would need for it to look in scale? I'm also a little scared about carving too deep and going through the foamboard base. But If I only need an inch then I think it's doable. Are you planning to pour resin? I'm scared of resin, I'm looking into other things instead of resin, not sure how it would react to XPS FB. Nice Video! Looking forward to seeing the river completed.

    • @joes2fst4umodelrr
      @joes2fst4umodelrr 6 місяців тому

      Hello there! It really depends on what the area is you’re modeling. If it’s a more rocky hilly area it’s pretty typical to see steep rock sides and a river that’s a good distance down from the bridge. If you’re more modeling a more flat area you could carve in maybe a half inch and it would look pretty normal. Most all rivers are not even on the bottom either so let that play in to your own river as you carve, you don’t need to make it perfectly flat. I have two more videos I think you’d find helpful! One is using the Woodland Scenics Realistic Water which will be a great option! Resin is nice but it heats up a lot during its curing process and could melt your foam board a bit. The woodland scenics one I show doesn’t do that. Then there’s a third video I have on using the Woodland Scenics Water Ripple Effects and I think you’d like that too, plus you’ll see how the river looks completed. Let me know if you have more questions I’m happy to help!
