Great question about self-worth, there are several ways that Ithink about this. If you take a religious point of view, God made us for a divine reason and we have unique gifts and characteristics in this world. We were not made by mistake but we are valued by god. Another way to have self-worth is to identify your core values and live with alignment to those values. If you use your core values as a filter in how you make decisions and live your life and relate to your loved ones and live in alignment. This is living with integrity and there is self-worth in that!

This is such a wonderful insight Brian thank you for sharing! It is worth reiterating that external factors cannot and should not play a part in our self-worth. Our lives have so many ups and downs that there will be many times where stress/anxiety/fear makes us act out of alignment or not according to our values. Or in a religious sense, people can start to experience self-loathing when they feel they are "sinning" or acting/moving away from God. i.e. Any time we make a mistake. (Of course, if your core belief is that you are valued by God no matter what then that's wonderful and very powerful for you!)
The main point is that just because we do or say something that we regret doesn't mean our self-worth should diminish. It's essential, whether it's religious, spiritual, or otherwise, to understand and believe that we are ALWAYS worthy of love and joy. It follows the notion of "I am perfect just as I am, flaws and all". Yes of course you can look for ways to improve yourself, but it should come from a place of love: "I love who I am and I'm always learning and growing!"
Versus hate: "I love who I am, but I hate x and y about myself, I need to change those."
You're completely right that identifying and living in alignment with your values will help you live a more fulfilling and joyful life. It's just worth remembering that even if you were stray from all of them, your self-worth remains untouchable :)
