- Scientists have identified certain kinds of chemical markers called epigenetic markers in the genomes of identical twins. Using this data, individuals can now determine if they were originally a twin in the womb and had a twin who vanished - a phenomena that is quite common. ThePrint’s Sandhya Ramesh explains new findings from the Netherlands and their implications in helping us understand how the environment alters our genetic information.

From the time I was a little girl, I asked my mother where my twin was. I put things together as I got older. At 3 months pregnancy, she bled profusely. The doctor told her she was miscarrying and to go home and go to bed. Then - voila - there I was 6 months later. I always felt a loneliness, like something was missing. I figured I'd have to wait until heaven to find out for sure.
My mom didn't know I knew all my life I was seraching my brother so mentally I surffered a lot from that but I came to know why I was like that since I am much better

So for people like me I am simplifying things, it goes like this- "Two embryos apply for birthing and after written, group discussion, personal interview only one is selected " and that's all.

this happened to me, when my mother was pregnant, during the initial check, my mother was told that she would have twins, at that time my mother became stressed because she didn't want to have twins and became sick, after some time, my mother did another check, and it turned out one of the twins was lost in the womb, the doctor explained that the 2 embryos had merged into one. I thought all this time, maybe this was just an error during the initial check, but it turns out cases like this do exist

Then along comes the rare partially present twin or "chimera being" to complicate things even more. The result of two or more embryos somehow starting to develop then later merging and creating one viable, at least to some extent, even all the way up to what appears to be, one apparently normal baby.
People interested in epigenetics can read about The Dutch famine of 1944-45. Also the book 'The gene' by Siddartha Mukherjee is must read.

@coolmrinx I heard a doc say once that estrogen protects the cells and that's why females are more rare than boys with autism. He gave more details, but that's all I remember.
I had 2 separate sacs my healthy son was in 1 sac and there was a empty sac. I was 6-9 weeks along.

@@bismashabib4315 they never told me. Since I was pregnant when covid-19 first started spreading. They were quick to get me in and out. They didn't talk much so I took it as a positive thing.
Same thing happened to me. My daughter is now almost 9.
@@diamondkisses26 I don't mean to pry, but did it affect your daughter in any way? Does she ever feel like part of her is missing or is she just like a child without a twin? I'm wondering because we lost one of our twin girls at 12 weeks, we know both were girls because of blood tests. I just want to know how this may affect my little survivor. I can't find anything about the effects on a surviving twin except medical effects. If she does feel like part of her is missing how do you comfort her through that? I just went to my 18 week ultrasound and now the twin is completely gone, nothing but an empty sac. I'm sorry if that is too personal of a question, I just want to know how to help her through it if she does grow up feeling like she's missing something.
