I've heard this story before and thought long and hard about it. Aside from the ever popular alien abduction theories. I think that they perhaps encountered an extremely localized severe weather event known as a downburst (there is some extremely rare footage of one floating around the internet if your curious...to my knowledge it's the only one ever filmed, that's how rare they are.), but they are extremely violent and powerful with tornadic/hurricane force winds that blow straight down in a small area less than a mile wide and can accompany or follow severe storms, this could cause very large waves to form the size of tsunamis or rogue waves and being so localized the rest of world might not have noticed.

Ultimately my heart very much belongs to Middle Earth, Narnia, Amber, Klaah, Lodoss, Hogwarts, Hyrule, and mostly the fantasy realm. Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til' ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more - only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin' tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye - a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself - forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea!

I've definitely heard the story of this lighthouse and appreciate this logical approach to what happened. I am an American from the state of Michigan. If unfamiliar it's the state that looks like a mitten and is surrounded by inland seas we call the Great Lakes. Therefore we have tons of lighthouses. I've never thought of them as creepy or scary. I've grown up respecting them for the safety they provide. In this state a lighthouse tour is something considered fun and historical. I'm not sure how the rest of America feels about lighthouses, but in my state we aren't scared.

I’m not sure about most here in California but personally I’ve been to visit several lighthouses and never thought of them as being creepy. I’ve been to the Point Reyes lighthouse, Piedras Blancas, and one other in northern CA but don’t remember it as well because I was pretty young. I also visited the one at Yaquina Head in Oregon. They’re interesting historical sites to me.

I like the "Giant seagulls" theory, sadly it makes far more sense then aliens or ghosts.
But yeah, they were likely hit by a giant wave or possibly one of the light keepers went postal. Of course it could be that one of them had an enemy or 2 that went to island and killed their enemy and the witnesses and dump their bodies in the sea too. Those are the 3 likeliest theories, I pick the giant seagulls as my 4th most likely scenario. ;)
