The Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), previously known as the National Resistance Army, is the armed forces of Uganda.
From 2007 to 2011, the International Institute for Strategic Studies estimated the UPDF had a total strength of 40,000-45,000 and consisted of land forces and an air wing.
The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) is the professional head of the Uganda People's Defence Forces.
He is responsible for the administration and the operational control of the Ugandan military.
The position was established after the National Resistance Army was reconstituted as the Uganda People's Defence Forces, three years after the NRA's victory in the Ugandan Bush War in 1986.
Today, we bring you the army officers who have held that position over the years since 1998.
Major General Mugisha Muntu
Gregory Mugisha Muntuyera, commonly referred to as Mugisha Muntu (born October 1958), is a Ugandan politician and retired military officer. He is the current President of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), a political party he founded in March 2019.
Mugisha Muntu was born in October 1958 at Kitunga village in present-day Ntungamo District, Ankole sub-region, Western Uganda, to Enock Ruzima Muntuyera and Aida Matama Muntuyera.
General Jeje Odongo
General Haji Abubaker Jeje Odongo is a Ugandan senior military officer and politician.
Jeje Odongo was born in Amuria District, in the Teso sub-region, in Eastern Uganda.
He entered the Ugandan army in 1979.
Major General James Kazini
Major General James Kazini was a Ugandan army officer who served as commander of the Uganda People's Defense Force from 2001 to 2003.
He was born in 1957 in the Basongora ethnic group, in Kasese District, in Western Region of Uganda.
Aronda Nyakairima
Aronda Nyakairima was a Ugandan military officer and politician who served as the chief of defense forces in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) from 2003 to 2013.
Nyakairima was born on 7 July 1959 in Rukungiri District, Western Uganda.
Gen. Katumba Wamala
Edward Katumba Wamala, more commonly known as Katumba Wamala, is a Ugandan general who serves as Minister of Works and Transport in the Ugandan cabinet, since 14 December 2019.
He was born on 19 November 1956 in Bweeza, Kalangala District, Ssese Islands.
General David Muhoozi
General David Rubakuba Muhoozi is a Ugandan Military Officer and Lawyer.
David Muhoozi was born in Mbarara District in 1965.
General Wilson Mbadi
General Wilson Mbasu Mbadi is a senior military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).
He currently serves as the Chief of Defense Forces, the highest position in Uganda's military since 2021.
He was born on 6 June 1962 in Kasese District.
