Why can’t MTV and VH1 create a streaming service where you can stream all these old shows and videos??????????

I wouldn't be surprised if they did not have the foresight to archive many of the shows.

120 Minutes is the only place I ever heard "Living Kind" by Ups & Downs. Do I ever miss this show!

Always liked hearing new music on this show. Never saw this one. Thanks for sharing it.

This was pretty radical for 1986 even though MTV interspersed ALT/college radio/UK Pop/underground bands in with mainstream artists pretty regularly. IRS Records "The Cutting Edge" had done a good job of introducing unknown bands throughout the 1980s.

Yes but IR$ collapsed because they didn't pay their Artists.

i got to tour a little with the flat duo jets in 92 93... so strange they were at the end of this i didnt even remember them on mtv ever.

This was 1987, but, wow, MTV playing the Cro-mags, Balaam & The Angel, and some indie band called Ups & Downs is why the channel was so great at the time. By 1988, 120 Minutes had become almost too formulaic, but for a moment there was hope for the little bands.

1991 was when 120 Mins became hopelessly mainstream. I'd have to stay up for the last 4 vids, which were the actual indie underground bands.1989-1991 were good yrs,w Kevin Seal and Dave.

That's so silly. If you watch episodes from 1995-96, the vast majority of them aren't videos played during the day by big mainstream bands at all. @@E.C.2

Pretty crazy seeing Suicidal Tendencies, Cro-Mags and MTV talking about the first single off of the Sonic Youth's Sister album. I was 5 years old when this aired and Sonic Youth was my favorite band and I had that album 7 years later.

Weird thing is the song/video from Sister they are teasing is Shadow of a Doubt from Evol. I wonder what the story is there?

This is probably late summer/fall of 87.REM Succumbs was released in October of 87,and Sonic Youths Sister LP came out on June 29th, 1987.

Thanks for posting! Never missed 120 Minutes in the mid-80's, used to record them on my Betamax! The show was quite a bit more diverse in this era than what it became by the 90's, they would play hardcore and industrial videos! I.R.S. Record's "The Cutting Edge" was also a worthwhile show MTV used to air in the mid-80's.

      You still have these shows?
Did they aired Jude Cole Back To School in there? In 1986?

@@hardnheavy9529 I wish I had all my old Betamax tapes! I typically recorded over 120 Minutes episodes after I watched them due to a lack of tapes, but I saved many many tapes full of Night Flight episodes on the USA Network. Sadly, I do not have any of them today (nor would I have a machine to play them on, even though Beta was a far superior format to VHS IMO). I do not recall Jude Cole.

They were definitely still playing stuff like that in the 90s, too, because that's when i begun watching it and i remember all kinds of "alternative" music, even though i guess some of it was probably better suited for the aptly titled "Alternative Nation" but there was plenty of crossover.
