    Rachet
    Extension
    Small flathead screwdriver

I had to change the coil pack and spark plugs on my 2016 trax 2 days ago. Was having the rough idle and misfiring, with loss of power as well. Runs like a champ again.

It seems to be a fairly common problem. I wasn't experiencing any symptoms yet but figured it was good preventative maintenance.

@@markthomas38 another problem as well is the diaphragm on the engine cover. If the seal breaks you need to replace the whole cover. Once you hit 60,000 miles its a ticking time bomb waiting to get damaged.

I just had the valve covers repaired for a rough idle at 47,000 miles. Had them put in new spark plugs as long as they were messing with it. The day after it was fixed, it started very noticibly misfiring while driving. Looking back, it was probably misfiring a little before this. Computer was just giving random misfire error codes. Ordered a coil pack from Rockauto. $120 vs $430 in the shop sounded like a better way to go, especially since it was just an educated guess about what was wrong on their part.

@@winpu70 Thanks for commenting. I've been hearing of the coil pack going bad at around 50k on some cars and that is what prompted me to replace mine. Rock Auto was way less expensive than the dealer! I wasn't even planning to make a video but just propped my phone up under the hood and thought I would give it a go. Saved a lot of money by doing it myself. Lol

You seemed to really crank on those spark plugs. The torque spec is 14ft-lbs, and you seemed to do quite a bit more than 1/4 turn after ratcheting. I hope there's no damage to the cylinder head or plug.

Thanks for your input. Yes, a torque wrench would have helped. I was going slow and being careful so I could see how it looked like I was cranking! I didn't go any further after the crush gaskets started sealing. Maybe I'll retorque though.

If your pcv valve cover goes bad...I would do this while at it....
The rough idle from pcv going bad coroded spark plugs and a few months later coilpack was misfire...
I would even recommend a aftermarket part vs oem...
Looks like alot of people have pcv issues in first 50k and alot of the same people plugs and coil packs.

That's a great idea. Especially since you have to remove the coil pack to do the valve cover I believe. I haven't done mine yet. It's still hanging in there.

    What tools do I need?

I listed all of the tools that I used in the video description. This was the first time that I replaced these items and it was fairly easy to do myself and save some money. If you make these repairs on your car leave a comment and let me know how you did!

I have 69000 on my 2015 trax, and in the last 2000 miles has started going bad

Btw - thanks for watching. I have about 52,000. So far it's been ok. I hope it hangs in there. I've heard the valve cover and turbocharger can be problematic.

Hi! I bought the Ignition coil pack and 4 spark plugs from Rockauto for just shy of $140 including tax and shipping. There were more expensive options but that was for OEM AC Delco.

I thought the coil pack. Is good for 100k miles.

    • @markthomas38
      @markthomas38  Рік тому

I guess they can sometimes last 100k miles. In the groups that I follow many people seem to start having trouble with the coil pack after 50k miles so I replaced it as preventative maintenance.
