    The hunter being played by the same actor as Alan's father is a deliberate choice. Van Pelt is the manifestation of Alan's fear of not growing up. If you ever go see a stage performance of Peter Pan it's traditional to do the same thing with Captain Hook. Having him be played by the same actor as Wendy's father.

    Regarding Kirsten Dunst’s pathological lying about their parents: their parents died in such a random, meaningless way, so it makes sense that she would invent a meaning for their death as a coping mechanism. Orphans often imagine that their lost parents are royalty or secret agents, giving themselves a meaningful heritage and an escape from their circumstances.

    • @lampad4549
      @lampad4549 2 роки тому +22

      I feel that isn't real mental health but a romantized version of it and furthermore she doesn't do it to just cope but she does it mess with people as well, and if it is a coping mechanisms the person using the coping mechanisms tends to not to make light of it and wasn't she a pathological lier even before their death?
      Either way, if what you say is true, that is a massive wasted opportunity to not explore that more and just used to make the character quirky.
      Also I don't know where you get the idea that orphans imagine their parents as royalty or secret agents, maybe if they never met them but she does know her parents.

    • @BoxOKittens
      @BoxOKittens 2 роки тому +24

      Yes! I was just about to make this exact comment. She's attempting to give their deaths meaning because random accidents are far scarier, especially for a child.

      @@lampad4549 As a kid, I did the exact thing as the character about my father who walked out. I lied to people about the reality of it because I wanted there to be an actual reason he wasn't there, or to get the sympathy of others I thought I needed a more meaningful tragic reason why he wasn't there. I once told a teacher he committed suicide by parking in front of an oncoming train... my teacher passed her condolences onto my mother who was understandable confused, I was six at the time.

    One of the coolest touches to me is how Jonathan Hyde portrays Samuel Parrish and Van Pelt, and simultaneously represents Alan's greatest anger and then his greatest fear.
    Especially the full circle moment when he berates Peter the same way his father did him, then corrects himself and comforts Peter instead.
    I have to also say that Jonathan Hyde is an underrated actor and a childhood favorite of mine.
    Cadbury in Richie Rich, Bruce Ismay in Titanic, Warren Westridge in Anaconda, Dr. Chamberlain in The Mummy to name a few! 👏👏👏

      Yes, I thought about that, too. But I don't know if I'd call Zathura a sequel. It sort of is - it came after this movie, it probably wouldn't have been made if this one hadn't been successful, and it was definitely marketed as a follow up for fans of this movie. Also, the premise is very similar. But the game is different, there's no crossover in the characters, and no clear in world connection between the two games. I think having strange creatures from another world show up in our world is a much more interesting premise than someone getting sucked into another world. They are good but I grew up with the original and I’m only 20 now, I think the original is better because it’s realistic and has the touch of real life added in by taking place outside the game and as a kid was definitely a bit creepy where the new ones are just pure comedy for the most part and don’t have much realistic tone or grim setting

    • @MandoWookie
      @MandoWookie 2 роки тому +2

      @@JonathanMandrake Like I said, it's my opinion. Welcome to the Jungle just didn't do much for me, I liked the twist on the premise they did, and Johnson was good with what he was given, and Karen Gillian... I've liked her since Doctor Who so I do not object to her role. Jack Black is Jack Black and sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't. Kevin Hart is like Will Ferrel to me, I find him aggressively annoying and intolerable to watch in 99% of everything I've seen him in( except for his stand up, that's funny).
      But compared to the original, which is more a story of a kid who feels alienated by everyone around him and unwanted and wants to escape and gets sucked into an existential eldritch nightmare of a scenario where he and everyone around him is at constant risk of mortal danger, has been obsessedly hunted by a deranged doppelganger of his father for over 20 years only to be finally released back to his home to find out that yes his father did love him, but it took his disappearance to show that and he was responsible for an entire town falling apart, the girl he started the game with has been psychologically traumatized since it happened to the point that telling people he was brutally murdered by his father was the her preferred version of the story, and now 2 more kids are involved and he still has to finish the game and go through more terror before he can be free.
      That's not a comedy movie. That's a horror movie. It just so happens they got Robin Williams involved, and he wasn't yet at the point in his career where they would not let him be in a comedy or be funny, so it was written with enough jokes and just enough campiness not to make it absolutely terrifying and then marketed to kids.
      But it is scary, and as a kid the scary parts hit just as hard as the funny parts, and there is a lot of character work and dramatic emotional connections that it elevates it in my opinion.
      It's a very dark movie if you think on it too long.
      The new ones are fine. Just not Jumanji for me. Zathura is again much better followup, with an identical premise( being in the game rather than the game jumping into the real world), but also tackles a lot of the anxieties and fears of both adults looking back on regrets and kids fears as they grow up in a good balanced way with comedy to take the edge off the dramatic and terrifying parts.

No matter how dated the CGI are, this movie is pure comedy gold, full of inspiration from 80's movies. The passage at the shop which indeed is an obvious callback to the Home Alone movies (especially with the paint buckets) and the monkeys that behave exactly like the Gremlins are two example I think of right now, but I suppose there are others.
    And it inspired other movies too : As Simone quickly noticed, Van Pelt is played by the same actor playing Alan's dad, which is meaningful in Alan story arc as it represents a fearful father figure. The 2003 Peter Pan (which by the way could be a Nice one to react to) did the same thing with Jason Isaacs playing both Wendy's father and Captain Hook.

      The sequels suffer from the usual traps these type of movies fall into.
      The original is an adventure comedy, with real stakes and danger. The sequels go all in on just the comedy, ignoring the seriousness that the originals put in.
      For example, in this, you have serious moments where Alan confronts the fact that he missed decades of his life. Or Sarah dealing with the trauma of what she witnessed (her freak out at seeing the game again is great).
      In Men In Black, the threat of the bug and the consequences of them failing are treated seriously.
      The sequels focus on just the comedy, since it's an easier sell, and they don't have to work as hard to construct a deeper narrative. As a result it's not as impactful.

    • @TankInATree
      @TankInATree 2 роки тому +4

      I think it falls in the sequel trap... by that I mean taking what people loved about the movie and then making the sequels all about that.
      Best example I have is "The Matrix"... People loved the effects, the slowmo, the fight scenes, and the concept of "something behind the veil". They took that to mean that making the sequel all about that, would make it better... but that is not true... It is not a movie stuffed with awe that will make a great movie... it is the movie that awes you at the right time.
      Now, I don't think that the sequels to Jumanji was *that* bad.... they just never captured the spirit of the first one.

    If you want to see Robin Williams in a non-comedy, "What Dreams May Come" is probaby a good, but quite hard choice. Especially since there are so many parallels between Robin Williams real life and the main theme of the movie - figthing and overcoming depressions. In real life Williams did not succeed...
    To recommend The Birdcage (1996) is somewhat of a two-edged choice, since it is a good film, but on the other side it is only a remake of the french movie La Cage aux folles (1978). It´s in the long line of american movies where the studios thought they would have to do an american version of a film from abroad.

    "Jumanji: a game for those who seek to find / a way to leave their world behind."
    Essentially, for those that want an adventure and that's what the game gives the player, an adventure. Is it the game's fault no one understands that? Given, I would probably haven't understood it either, but hey.
    I don't think you can destroy the game. It controls time, space, reality and in all probability even death. It would be a small thing to make any try to destroy it fail, or it's simply reassembling itself.
    My theory is that only those that want what the game offers can hear the drums. It's just that kid's usually crave adventure more often than adults.
    I was really disappointed with the first trailer of the new movie. When I heard they were going to make another I hoped to see them play the game in a big city and the city slowly turning into a jungle the longer they played.I understand why they didn't go there, but it could have been spectacular.

      Yeah, he's not a boy trapped in a man's body, but more of a man-child that didn't get to grow up in the real world, but he still grew up within the world of Jumanji. And your last sentence hit on one (of many things) that this film so well. Alan would almost always know what was coming because he lived it for 26 years. The movie dropped subtle clues, hints, and dialogue throughout to indicate that Alan knew how to deal with the creatures coming out of the game.

    The older I get, the father and son scene at the end just gets to me more and more. Can't watch it with dry eyes.

    I ❤ you guys and your reactions! And Simone, I don't want to hurt your feelings, far from it. Or spoil your giddy mood going into each reaction. So my dilemma is to figure out what is the kindest way to say that each one of your off-the-wall beginning statements is better than the next one...
    Please don't be offended.

      I wonder how many people realize that its a sequel, if I remember correctly there is no direct connection in the plot but its based on book that was sequel to orginal book Jumanji.

      @@Culaio I think it's a widely forgotten movie. Which is kind of sad, it's not terrible it just wasn't Jumanji.

    Always loved Williams acting and camera movement when he puts his hand over his piece, and is like… the elephant was mine….
    Spooky!

    Another great Robin Williams film is death to smoochy. Very underrated dark comedy and few people seem to know it. Well worth a watch imo

    one thing I noticed about the hunter was when you notice him wearing a wedding ring when he reaches out of the paint cans... I wonder if the hunter is always the person you have always feared when you roll?

    Simone's love for the chubby rhino reminded me of a t-shirt I saw on Amazon that had a rhino on it, and a saying that read, "Save the chubby unicorns"!!!

    They did make an animated series that was about 40 episodes. It's about Judy and Peter finding and playing the game. Each turn they take a game clue is given to them and are sucked into Jumanji until they solve it, they are helped by Alan so they can go home while he is stuck in the game, each episode they return back to the game to complete it and find a way for Alan finally escape.

      Ah yes. I remember it well. I always loved to hate that salesman who was always trying to sell Judy and Peter stuff. Seems like back in the 80s and 90s they used to make a lot of animated series based on movies. Back to the future, Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb & Dumber, etc.
