Sweeps week comes from Nielson ratings and started in the 1950s. That's the week they would start on the east coast and "sweep" west, collecting tv viewing information from chosen viewing households who had opted to participate. This tended to be a week where shows would have big events or cliffhangers to draw numbers and boost their ratings. News programs would also tend to get a little more sensationalistic around that time.
0:48 It's a yo-yo, George. 4:55 Sweeps refers to the four most important months of the year in television. Networks track ratings, household shares, audience demographics (18-49 being the most valuable), and impressions. Based the Nielsen data collected, networks are able to set local and national ad rates for the year. Higher ratings means commanding higher ad revenue for a program and network overall. This led shows to drum up the juiciest stories to garner the most viewers possible. This is why season premieres in the fall and season finales in the spring often feature high profile guest stars, two-parter cliffhanger episodes, and hilarious or shocking storylines. It's why the Super Bowl commands such high ad rates. It's why Oprah was able to remain number one in the ratings during her show's entire 25 year run and became a multi-billionaire from syndication. It's why Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives became famous for their disaster episodes. It's the will they / won't they of Ross and Rachel on Friends. It's Community's iconic Modern Warfare episode from S1. It's "Who shot JR?" on the show Dallas.
I'm pretty sure I know the reason for the laugh track during bloopers: director Tom Shadyac once said that he does not allow the crew to laugh on set (or at Jim Carrey). My guess is that he's trying to prevent people from getting the giggles and making it difficult to get through takes. You can find a blooper reel of this movie on UA-cam in which you'll see Morgan Freeman say "no laughing on the set," per the instructions of Shadyac.
Sweeps is the four months in every year when local broadcast channels get measured for ratings: February, May, July, and November. It determines ad rates. Within those months, local stations and networks often do stunt programming in order to boost viewership.
The part where he was messing with Evan on air had me crying the first time I saw it back then. Hard to believe this movie is 20 years old now. I recommend the underrated Jim Carrey movie “Fun With Dick and Jane”. It’s a remake of an older movie by the same name but it’s pretty hilarious too.
You should try the movie "Oh God" starring George Burns and John Denver. An oldie but a goodie. You can also try one of Jim Carrey's first movies "Earth Girls are Easy". Not too many lines for him, but stars Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis.
Excellent editing George. My favorite part is when you had to edit through Simone's "Ums" 2 times before she got to the actual answer to your "what's sweeps?". You guys crack me up
when they first released this film they put an ACTUAL phone number on the pager. All later releases were dubbed over with a "555" number (which is not a real phone extension; that's why movies and TV always use it).
4:13 that's interesting that you mentioned that George, because this movie and Liar Liar stars the same lead actor and directed by the same director, Jim Carrey and Tom Shadyac
God (no pun intended) this movie was fucking hilarious and I haven’t watched it in years so thank you for this. I honestly was crying laughing at the Steve Carell gibberish part, and this is why I love reaction videos. And every time George made an, “omg but what about the consequences,” comment I was SO excited to see him be validated. So cathartic.
Sweeps Week isn't really a thing anymore but it was a week that happened 4 times a year when the TV ratings were calculated. The networks all had their biggest episodes and specials during sweeps week. With internet streaming and DVRs that doesn't quite work anymore.

Well if they've seen this and Liar Liar, I've no doubt they would enjoy Yes Man. Very similar. (I Love You, Philip Morris is really darn hysterical too, on a different level.)
Bruce Almighty is hilarious, but I just watched (Android Night Punch) so I had to say something. Fantastic job Simone. How fun. It must have been hard to keep a straight face and not break into laughter during filming. I had no idea what was going to happen but I just couldn't look away.
28:15 this set look familiar? It was all shot on the universal lot, but this scene in particular is the clock tower courtyard from Back To The Future :)
I'd love to see y'all react to Stranger than Fiction. A semi serious Will Pharrell movie with similar themes and tone. One of my all time favorites and if you love story writing it's definitely worth a watch.
Sweeps, when in the pre-cable days a week when Nielsen was measuring the ratings for (the over the air) TV channels (for the quarter I think). Since everyone knew the week in question there was large monetary motivation to pack said week with the best ratings grabbers.
9:01: in the original theatrical release, this was a 777 number (get it?), but it turned out to be a real phone number for a famous radio station and a bunch of other people, who kept getting called by other people looking to speak to God, so it was later edited into the industry-standard, nonexistent-in-real-life 555.
This movie came out two years before Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitt broke up but it's possible she felt the same way about Brad at the time but hadn't committed to leaving him, yet.
There are so many great little details in this movie, like Bruce holding a big clear thing of water at the party and pouring red wine out of it, or Bruce saying he's Dirty Harry and pulling out a gun only to hide it then say he's Bruce so when he goes to throw away the gun you see he's actually now holding a microphone instead
I don't think George and Simone knew Jim Carrey was doing a Sammy Davis, Jr. impression there in the beginning of the out-takes. I could be wrong. They are maybe a little too young to know the impression. They might know who he was though. I know I'm older than either of them being 47 and I was 14 when he died.
I think it's not just knowing who Sammy Davis Jr is but needing to have seen the time when Sammy Davis Jr impressions were one of the big impressions that pretty much everybody did, and did pretty much the same.
Also, Carrey’s impression at 3:33, when he holds the brush like a mustache and says, “And that’s the way it was…”, for some reason George thought it was Will Ferrell?? He was actually doing Walter Cronkite, the great news anchor who said that when signing off.

Sweeps Week isn't really a thing anymore but it was a week that happened 4 times a year when the TV ratings were calculated. The networks all had their biggest episodes and specials during sweeps week. With internet streaming and DVRs that doesn't quite work anymore.
26:32 it's okay Simone. That scene shatters me too.
Worst Date of my life.
Saw this opening night on a first date. During the “Grace prays to stop loving Bruce” scene, my date ERUPTS in tears. The packed movie theater turns and looks at me. Women in the audience began to get emotional and Men start telling my date, “Are you ok? / Does he hurt you? / You should leave him?” My date and i left the movie and I drove her home while she told me about her ex boyfriend. I never met her cheating ex, yet he STILL ruined my date.
25:30 I see what you mean as both characters are news anchors but keep in mind, Universal Produced this film while DreamWorks produced Anchorman
People are allowed to make jokes.
I had no idea what was going to happen but I just couldn't look away.
check out Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind next pls!!! one of jim carrey’s finests
26:34
nobody can.
she's one of the ever-lasting "Hollywood sweethearts" right next to Jennifer Connelly, Ally Sheedy and Elizabeth Shue.
Evan Almighty is another movie kinda like this, didn't get the best ratings overall, but still fun.
Thank you for watching this. I hadn’t seen it in so long and forgot how funny it was.
This movie always makes me wish that Steve Carell and Jim Carrey would have done so many more movies together.
Yes 😂😂😂
That was the crew cracking up over the bloopers
You've gotta watch Me, Myself and Irene. It's probably Jim Carrey's most insane movie, also literally lol.
Yes… Me, Myself and Irene is his most underappreciated movie.
It’s a crime how much that movie flew under the radar
28:15 this set look familiar? It was all shot on the universal lot, but this scene in particular is the clock tower courtyard from Back To The Future :)
Sweeps is when they pay closest attention to the ratings. So they get the best stories out at that time
Pumat Sol reference was the BEST!!!
I'd love to see y'all react to Stranger than Fiction. A semi serious Will Pharrell movie with similar themes and tone. One of my all time favorites and if you love story writing it's definitely worth a watch.
omg yes i love this movie!
18:41 Saw this movie in theaters, and this moment had the entire audience roaring in laughter.
24:42 Since you both didn't react to that reference, I think you need to watch Ace Ventura next!
Sweeps, when in the pre-cable days a week when Nielsen was measuring the ratings for (the over the air) TV channels (for the quarter I think). Since everyone knew the week in question there was large monetary motivation to pack said week with the best ratings grabbers.
Another great movie in the same vein as this is Bedazzled (2000) with Brendan Fraiser. So funny, would recommend a react for it!!
I second this. Bedazzled is a great watch!
Oh they'll love this one.
26:54 Editor.... Good job on that one. Really, really good one. Ya got me!
Go George with the awesome fan theory!
10:07 surprised to see a critical role reference out in the wild but it put a massive smile on my face lol
9:01: in the original theatrical release, this was a 777 number (get it?), but it turned out to be a real phone number for a famous radio station and a bunch of other people, who kept getting called by other people looking to speak to God, so it was later edited into the industry-standard, nonexistent-in-real-life 555.
The cut at 14:08 had me cracking up 😂
So glad you had such a fun time enjoying this film.
This movie came out two years before Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitt broke up but it's possible she felt the same way about Brad at the time but hadn't committed to leaving him, yet.
@DarkTitan Bruce or Brad? Also was that the first time he cheated on her or had she known about it for years with multiple women?
@DarkTitan Brad but I was trying to draw a parallel between the circumstances of Bruce cheating on her and Brad actually cheating on her.
This and how the grinch stole Christmas are my absolute favorite Jim Carrey movies
You should also watch Evan Almighty. N it's a sequel that focuses on Evan
The sequel is great 👍
ngl its not that bad but it’s definitely not as good as this one
A giant box office bomb
@@Logan_Baron who were the big people who did his impression-Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal? I can't think of others off the top of my head.
Also, Carrey’s impression at 3:33, when he holds the brush like a mustache and says, “And that’s the way it was…”, for some reason George thought it was Will Ferrell?? He was actually doing Walter Cronkite, the great news anchor who said that when signing off.
I mean, George didn't know what a Yo-yo was ;)
Bruce's prayers is the best prayer i have ever heard. Its my fave part in this film.
