Every night starting in the late afternoon, the Forodhani Gardens in the center of Stone Town, Zanzibar, turns into a street food hawker center. There are quite a few things available to eat, some of them look alright, while others could be better. But one of the most famous things to eat at this market, is the invention of a Zanzibar pizza... yah, it's not exactly a traditional food.. and I'm wondering who invented this pretty ridiculous street food concoction!
So there are actually quite a few vendors that make Zanzibar pizza at Forodhani Gardens, and it's all pretty much the same and costs the same amount, so basically just choose a vendor, and then choose what type of filling you want. I decided to go for a chicken Zanzibar pizza. First they take a ball of dough and flatten it out kind of like a thin roti. Then they add another layer of dough, this one a bit thicker and sort of already half cooked and greasy. Then go in all the random ingredients like onions, peppers, and then that scoop of happy cow cheese, a dollop of mayonnaise, and finally a egg plopped right in the middle to finish things off. The ingredients are all mixed together, folded up into a pocket and fried in vegetable ghee until it's cooked all the way through and golden on the outside.
The Zanzibar pizza is then sliced into bite sized pieces and served with tomato sauce on the side. I have to be honest and say that a Zanzibar pizza is not my favorite thing in the world. Sure it's pretty tasty, but that processed cheese paired with a spoon of mayonnaise just doesn't appeal too much for me. But that being said, it is something everyone should try once for yourself, more about the experience than about the taste or quality of the food!
So when you're in Stone Town, be sure to sample a Zanzibar pizza at the Forodhani Gardens.

I didn't really understand the unhealthy part? A lot of the food that you eat is usually loaded with all kinds of processed sauces and msg which is just as bad if not worse than mayo and processed cheese. The zanzibar pizza actually looked to me much healthier than usual american pizza.

What exactly makes this unhealthy? The amount of mayo seems minimal, and the rest appeared to be fresh cut onions/etc. and some chicken. I'm at a loss as to why you caution people to only eat this once a year.

it is not that unhealthy, compared to McDonalds, KFC, etc. It could actually be quite healthy if they simply made they own mayo with their eggs. use real cheese rather than process cheese and use coconut oil rather than vegetable oil. This would be healthy if they used local ingredients, with free ranged eggs. I would help fund a kid if he want to go healthy.

It reminds me of the Japanese dish okonomiyaki. Which is a kind of thin pancake batter with cabbage and other veg and meats with an egg added. It is fried on a griddle. and after it is turned over, they add an okonomiyaki sauce and mayo with bonito fish flakes and green onions.

Didn't get this -- What on Earth is UNhealthy about egg, onion, that green veg, tomato, cheese and mayo (mayo is made of egg, oil, vinegar) they used real mayo?!?!🤔🙂 (and it's American, has to be good!😁!)
Not a negative comment -- enjoyed video as always! 😊 -- but still think very healthy food!
    And
Hey Mark ALL you needed was a BUNCH of HOT peppers added and chili pepper sauce and you would have LOVED it and thought it was amazingly healthy!!!!!!!
I think you should ALWAYS just carry a little baggie of chopped up jalapeno, ghost, habanero, serrano, scotch bonnet etc peppers with you at ALL times)
Because, come on Mark, IF you could have poured them on that pizza, you would have LOVED it and said it was one of the best pizza you ever tasted and UN-healthy would have NEVER even entered your thoughts!!!!! 🤔😁😄😯🤣

LOL.. Omg I have to go with you on that Mark. Mayonnaise, which is egga and oil. An egg mixed in, and the processed cheese, (Oil) Yikes. But it looked interesting with the onions and other vegetables. maybe if they had saute'd the vegetables with Olive oil, while cooking the dough, Then adding the egg to the cooked vegetables, making sort of an omelet.
Place the cooked crust ontop, Flip over and then add Cheddar, or even some fresh cheese. (Feta)
Anyway, LOL thats the cook in me looking at something and want to improve it. LOL

Zanzibar Pizza actually it wasnt pizza, it kind of capathee (india food) or Egg Martabak at Indonesia. Sometimes it put choped onion, leek, some duck eggs and curry meat, wrap with flour dough. Then fried. Cut into square then eat with chili and cucumber pickels.

    Aloha,
It looks weird & all but I actually have a friend that likes to do a "Slap Pack Cookout" (he's the one that came up with the name) some how he woke up craving a pizza so with what little dough he could find he started throwing this & that into it!!! Everything that's in the Zanzibar Pizza is actually what he threw in plus a few other things like horseradish mixed with the mayo for a spicy kick & a few other things that I can't remember. Have to admit when he made it again for us you should have seen our faces!!!! Lol....

Haha, thanks for sharing, and that's an awesome name. I think I would have made it minus the may, better quality cheese, and hot sauce, and it would have been pretty good. Horseradish sounds good too!
