    I got inspired by your trip to Switzerland with XC70 and took my V50 from 2008 2.5l petrol for 6000km trip from Lithuania to Belgium, France, Switzerland and back. Held out perfectly. 171000 miles on dial still running nicely.

      One of the few cars I miss is my 2008 V50 2.0d, it was very basic and bright Red.
      Fitted a used leather interior and did loads of miles in it.
      Was also one of the last V50 2.0d to not have a DPF, because it was such a low spec (I think it was an S), so no Eloys fluid to top up.

      @gimble447 Рік тому

      @@bigjmlthe trim level has nothing to do with having or not having a dpf, I have an "S" with a dpf and it's September 2007 ( 57) lol, I have a different engine though ( 1.6 d) I think it's actually that the 2.0 was the last to get a dpf (late 2009) but also it may have been removed, not 100% sure

      @@gimble447 You could buy a 2007 2.0d V50 with a DPF
      You can disagree all you want
      But my info comes from Volvo UK
      I sold the car in 2012, so could have mistaken the model designation.
      It might not have been an S, it was the absolute bottom of the range though.
      It had cloth seats, 16” wheels, no sunroof, no privacy glass. Nothing
      It was the most basic V50 I ever saw.

    I can tell you from experience that the V50 is an awesome car, and i’m lucky to own one with the D5 manual as it’s a rare spec. I’m often doing long distance drives and towing and it never skips a beat. It’s not a massive car but it’s still an estate and for my usage it’s very practical. Underrated car in my opinion

      Maybe Matt is the one in 1000 dealers but in my experience sellers know it will make zero difference to the price they get offered. Dealers factor in valet fees anyway. Whether you hand over a show car or a skip on wheels, you're going to be offered rock bottom

    • @pclayton5063
      @pclayton5063 Рік тому +6

      I always have a pristine trade when I show up at a dealers lot. Not so much thinking it will increase any offer but more to show I care what my cars look like and that's the condition I'm also looking for. If you show up with junk you're more than likely going to be offered junk because the dealer sees you don't really care.

    • @hughjass8430
      @hughjass8430 Рік тому +5

      @@pclayton5063 I'd be same. I clean it meticulously for MOT'S etc. But I just don't think dealers will factor in abit of light grime and a crisp packet when determining price. They would put stock in body/paint condition, mileage and service history, above all else.
      I bought a mechanically solid n well maintained Avensis this summer from a small dealer. The car was a literal dog house when I viewed it but he had it valeted and it was immaculate for pickup. It's a cheap and easy refresh job for a dealer compared to expensive body and mechanical work.

      I spent hours cleaning my Volvo C30 before I traded it in. Then on the way there the M5 was closed and I had to do 50 miles down country lanes in the winter. It was absolutely filthy when I got there and I was gutted. Mind you the V40 I picked up (from a main dealer) was none too clean inside so karma I suppose 😄

    I once brought a 13 year old 850 estate. He had spent £2k on a new Ac system , £500 on a new wiper assembly and £400 on a new windscreen at a Volvo dealer before selling it to me 3 months later. That was on top of full main dealer service history, and thousands more in receipts. I’ve always brought second hand Volvo’s since, people generally keep them immaculately.

    I remember at 10 years old my brother and I thinking it was a spaceship compared to our old rusting Passat they’d traded in. We used to take it down to South Wales, across the channel to France and everywhere else in between, full to the brim on camping trips. Great memories of that car and it never once let us down.
    After 15 years of solid use they gave it to my elder brother who has used it to commute up to Scotland from Derbyshire and back on a weekly basis for the last 3 years. Still runs like a dream.

You wouldn't want an automatic with the 2.0D engine, it would have had a Ford powershift transmission which were unreliable, but the D5s with a geartronic Auto were better, but not many of these around. Had a pre-facelift V50 Sport which I sold this year.. R-Design spec was introduced on the facelift, when Volvo decided that they wanted to steal sales from the 3-Series Touring. Sport was better than R-Design in some respects, as those R-Design two-tone seats get very grubby quite easily (Sport had black leather as standard). Mine was very well appointed; electric, heated leather seats, cruise, air-con, dual-climate control. A great budget cruiser that you can service with gen-2 Focus parts. Mine also had the 2.0D engine which I believe has PSA origins- the same unit can be found in some Peugeot/Citroen commercials of that era. Not the last word in refinement but quick, easy to work on and powerful with a lot of low-end torque that you'd expect. Sold mine as I wanted something smaller...so I got a C30 (which I always wanted) with the same power plant and equipment spec. Always liked Volvo; something about them that doesn't give off the same negative vibe their German counterparts.

    I usually recommend these as first cars, well, this and the other Ford Focus Mk.2 based Volvos. They're cheap to repair, decently reliable, and importantly cheap to insure.
    Although, the early C30s are starting to rust, while the S40/V50/C70, which are on a LWB version of the Focus chassis, seems to rust a lot less.
    Not all of them have bluetooth though, it was optional, and it's something most people want these days. Thankfully they have an AUX in, so you can use one of those satnav looking things that have auto/carplay, which can work as a bluetooth reciever as long as the car has AUX.

    About a decade ago, I picked up a second hand V50 T5 for a very good price. Looked a bit tatty on the outside, but the engine was sound and it had about 70k miles on the clock, so it was only just run in by Volvo standards. A real wolf in sheep's clothing. Great performance and handling, with plenty of space in the back.

    I owned 2 V70 D5 diesels while working in a sales job. My last one did 385.000 kms. Changing distribution belts and water pump every 160.000 was very expensive. Otherwise zero problems. The GPS did fail and wouldn’t pop up but was using my phone to navigate. I would have ordered another new one but Volvo were getting too expensive due to all that leasing rubbish. My sales man also retired. Moved on to Kia Ceed. Now run a Tucson which is incredibly reliable

    I ran a 2008 V50 with a 1.6D engine for a year , It was reliable but very frustrating car.
    Ironically i still do see it about on occasions ( Rather sad i remember it’s reg number ).
    my biggest pet hates were inadequate headlights, bulb changes were a big nightmare especially the front sidelights , Also very noisy & poor torque when climbing hills at slow speeds ( The turbo kicks in too high up the rev band).
    Then the emissions system with eolys fluid in a separate tank , Only dealers could do the work along unless you spend £1000k + On vida - dice system .

      Yep same with my 1.8 in a Mazda 6. I find changing the oil every 10k kilometers with 5w 30 fully synthetic and adding Forte oil conditioner at every oil change reduces the oil consumption.Throw in some cat cleaner into the petrol tank every couple of months to keep cat from blocking up and as u said it just keeps going.I tried thicker oils but it just reduces the mpg and engine flushes just make the oil consumption worse. Once u dont mind checking and toping up oil every couple weeks it perfect.Nice simple engine with no Direct Injection carbon issues to deal with 👍
