Charles XII, sometimes Carl XII (Swedish: Karl XII) or Carolus Rex (17 June 1682 - 30 November 1718 O.S.), was King of Sweden (including current Finland) from 1697 to 1718. ... Leading the Swedish army against the alliance Charles won multiple victories despite being usually significantly outnumbered. And he was only 15 years when he became King!

@@Killermcknight on one side you have 10k swedish professional soldiers. On the other, 40k russians. Battle took place in a blizzard. 10k russian soldiers were killed and 20k captured. Swedish losses: 667 men. Karl XII(carolus rex) was a military genius on par with Napoleon, he is one of the most unheard military geniuses throughout european history for most people.
Carolus personally often led his own battles with the men. Some battles he was in the first line with his troops. He won battle after battle while often being outnumbered 4 to 1. His tiny yet highly professional army faced Denmark, Norway, Russia, Poland-Lithuania and Saxony with no allies while still holding the countries borders relatively intact. He was/is the last king in europe that died on the field of battle. It was the end of the swedish empire, which at the time was one of the most powerful countries just after England, France and Spain.

As the lyrics said chosen by God means that the church has no power over him. At the time the church was a big power in Europe.
So it was extraordinarily to deny the church its power.
Sabaton "Lion From The North" is pretty good song from the Carolus Rex album, also songs like Midway, Aces in Exile and Primo Victoria
As a native Swede i can obviously not demand people to learn Swedish (or can i🤔😈). Sabaton's Swedish songs is the best.
'En livstid i krig, live in Goethenburg' is the best but 'Carolus Rex' has a 9 year old fan video still worth a watch (in Swedish with English subtitles and ripped movie sequences).

If you want more from Sabaton I can highly recommend en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war) live scandinavium gothenburg 2020. It is the Swedish version of the song so you should turn on the subtitles. I was there and it was simply an awesome show.

Welcome into the world of Sabaton. I really enjoy watching ppl discovering them. You chose a really good album to start with.The whole albums are epic, and I say albums because you are correct. Carolus Rex was released both as a Swedish- and English speaking album. The swedish is written from a more personal perspective, which leads me to a recommendation. You really need to watch the swedish version of a lifetime of war from that album and you need to watch the live video.

This is definitely in my top 3 from these guys. Not their heaviest or fastest but the groove just hits me. Every member of this band is a stellar musician. I can not praise them enough. Touching on what Psychopad said, had History been taught like this in high school I would have aced it so easy lol
Probably my fav. It's slow heavy, chuggy, etc. But just has power to it.

I'm glad you liked this introduction, Sabaton is an exciting band with a real passion for history. Beyond their music and Joakim's voice, their lyrics are really interesting and would make anyone want to be interested in history. What the school never managed to do ahah :p

Glad you liked the song. Sabaton is from my home country (Sweden) and I have seen them live many times. They are awesome! The first song I ever heard by them maybe 15 years ago is Primo Victoria. It's an instant classic. I very much recommend it :)

They got tons of great songs and except for one album, all their songs are about historic events or people, without taking sides.
"40 to 1", "Aces In Exile", "Coat Of Arms", "Firestorm", "Ghost Division", "Midway", "Nightwitches", "Talvisota", "The Art of War", "The Price Of A Mile", "Wehrmacht", "White Death", "Winged Hussars" are all a little older.
They did a cover here and there, like "You´re in the Army now" or "Twilight Of The Thunder God" (both are IMHO at least on par with the original).
I personally think not enough people react to "Coat of Arms"

With what you said here, it feels like you are gonna love Sabaton. :)
They have a few things that they "always" do, their choruses are extremely catchy, pretty much made for the audience to sing along with. And also, they always make sure that the music fits the story. All the music. As you noticed here, the solo was perfect for the song, thats the way they always do it, no single part of it is ever allowed to overshadow the whole.
Since you asked about if this was about a real king, they always sing about real history. As someone from the band said a bunch of years ago, "Why should we try to come up with our own stories when there are so many amazing stories out there that nobody tells?" :)
And also, when I write "always" here, that is not entirely true, their first album was not history based, but all the rest are, and also, they have changed their music, early in their career they had a pretty much standard power metal sound with history based lyrics on top, in the last couple of albums they have found their style.

First note: Joakim Bröden voice sounds the same in studio as live.
You want a change of pace; check "Screaming Eagles", official music video. Then go live. I recommend Woodstock, Poland 2012 for starters. The opener "Ghost Division", "UPRISING", "Primo Victoria", and absolutely "40 : 1". Over 700 000 people attended this venue,mostly polish, but people from all over Europe come to see Sabaton. And then... well you got your work cut out for you. They sing about historical events or real hero's of all world battles. They also have Sabaton History Channel were history behind each song is explained. It's worth checking.
O, and if you really want to dive into Sabaton, you better set a separate day to react to their songs. It's 20 years of their work. Have fun.🤘🇵🇱

Near the site of hes death it was found 2 buttons in silver welded together. And no one knows what killed him? He had a hole from behind right ear to the side of hes eye and the eye had fallen out of its socket. So the suspect a bullet... and the silver button near site they put 1 + 1 as the belived he couldnt die. Shot 3 times befor the murder. Once in the head knocked hes hat off, once in yhe throat and the bullet laid in hes scarf, and once in the foot made him walk with a limp. And forth time we all know what happend.

if you dont like Sabaton youre insane You also need to watch Sabaton History channel. All songs are bsed on historical events. This one was about Karl (Charles) XII of Sweden
Sabaton is a Swedish Power Metal band from Falun, which was formed in 1999. The band's songs are inspired by various historical wars. Even the band name is military inspired, as Sabaton is also the name of the part of the armor that covers the foot.

I love the Carolus Rex album, but I love them all. My suggestion for older stuff: To hell and back, Gallipoli, Screaming Eagles, Stalingrad, Panzerkampf.
To hell and back is considered older? I thought that was from the Heroes album, one of the newer albums?

On the presumption no one's said it before, you should listen to the Swedish version of this album "Carolus Rex". I'd argue its better than the English version, and the songs are done from the Swedish prespective and can be darker lyrically. Like "1648" (English) is from the Czech prespective, "1648" (Swedish) is from the Swedish; "Killing Ground" (English) is a "nicer" version, whereas "Ett Slag Fargot Rott" is darker talking about chasing down the fleeing enemy and slaughtering them.
Also, the album "Heroes" is really good for a mix of songs about various heroes of WW2; American (Screaming Eagles), Pole (40:1), Brazilian (Smoking Snakes), Czech (Far From the Fame), etc.

Well good question, if you have many foreigners as guests, maybe it's a good idea, personally i dont need it, English, danish, German, Norwegian and I'll survive, but I do tend to struggle with Japanese and Korean for and wierd reason 🤔😉

The link is not the official video, buuut, it does tell the storie of what the song is about + the song it self is texted.. and must admit.. when u look around us, we see it happening today in both smaller and bigger scale, especially in two big countries that actually shares boarders, east and west on the planet earth..
But hopefully you'll enjoy the song, it's a bit dark chosen cords in it, what I'm very sure is done on purpose to empathize the darkness.. and as said, the movie is showing in biig pictures what the song is about..

As a Swede i LOVE how he shows his training.
Never heard him sing in an operatic style though. Also he uses very less vibrato
