  • Tonight i listened to Sabaton and their song Carolus Rex! I googled what it was (i wanted to make sure it wasnt a dinosaur) and it's the name of the Swedish King Charles who took the throne following the death of his father.
The lyrics in the song paint a picture of a young, ruthless, power mad king with god on his side. But tell me, was he really like that? Did he achieve the things he said he would? was it bravado? LET ME KNOW

Ruthless is wrong, hardheaded and uncompromising is right. He was not a cruel person. But he was a King raised in a absolutist tradition so you know he really belived he was chosen by god to lead Sweden and that he answered only to god. He was hard as rock, walked in to battle whit his men, he killed several people in battle and was wounded several times. He was dressed as a soldier used no wig, was a strict lutheran. He hunted bears in his early teens whit nets and clubs as the warrior nobility in Sweden sometimes did. Yet he was very smart, good at math and spoke several languages. When he became king a coalition of Denmark-Noway, Poland-lithuiania, Saxony and Russia declared war on him thinking they could crush Sweden like a bug but the King led his men to victories for several years even knocking out denmark-norway and poland-lithuania from the war before reality hit the Swedes at Poltava.
I think Sabaton are making him a sound a bit to harsh in the English version. He was a very complicated man and Swedish historians are still arguing about him. He died as he lived by a bullet shot to the head when he was scouting out a Norwegian fortification, he scouted it out himself since he would not spare himself anything that he would command another to do.

He's also the one leader who came closest to successfully invading Russia. Russia at the time would probably have surrendered in quite a short notice if Poltava was won by the Swedes. Roughly 25 000 Caroleans died in battle (200 000 in total, including disease, starvation and exhaustion) and 18 000 of those died at Poltava. So up until that point Sweden had lost 7 000 men in battle and Russia had lost roughly 30 000 men, Poland-Lithuania and Saxony had lost about 17 000, and Denmark had lost roughly 6 000. This adds up to a 7 000 to roughly 45 000 men. That gives us a K/D of 6.43/1. That's pretty impressive considering the invasion of Denmark was over in less than a month, The first battle against Poland-Lithuania was the Siege of Riga in 1700 where roughly 4 000 Swedes counter attacked against 14 000 Poles and won. The Polish general laid dead and the army was in full retreat back to the border. The first battle against Russia was at Narva where 10 000 Swedes won a staggering victory against 40 000 entrenched Russians (1700 had one of the coldest winters in history). The Swedish army had sailed through raging autumn storms before landing in western Livonia. Then Charles personally lead his army of 10 000 men on a 150 mile march towards an enemy 4x his size. Due to the biting cold, the Russian guns refused to fire, and due to the thick fog and the snowstorm, the poorly trained Russian levies were taken completely by surprise. Unlike the Russians, the Swedes were highly trained in melee combat which made the "gå på" tactic very effective. This time, however, almost no shots were fired as the blue and yellow coated demons charged the Russian tranches. The 40 000 Russians were quick to retreat, but when they tried to cross the river, the bridge collapsed, resulting in a total death count of around 1 000 Swedes and 18 000 Russians. Official Russian losses are said to be between 6 000 to 8 000 but then there were several thousand deserters that froze to death, which estimates the losses at 18 000. 79 officers and 10 generals were captured as well.

This is a quote about how Stannis doesn't believe as much as he needs the fear and power she posses.
The story he was referring to is that when he was younger he cared for an injured weak bird. It gained him nothing but humiliation in comparison to Roberts Hawk. He know understand that he needs to find himself his Hawk. Which is the Red Women.

@@shortstuff780 It is possible though, that Carolus (and many other leaders as well) just used the religious aspect as propaganda to gain loyal followers, and possibly to instill fear in his opponents. At least now, in modern times, I feel it's very unlikely for any competent, clever/ruthless leader to actually believe they were chosen by the gods to their position.
Leave it to the brainwashed to follow, while those at the top dictates where to lead them.
I'm not knowledgeable enough about the game of thrones universe to argue, but if Stannis is willing to use a mythical/religious/supernatural figure for his own ambitions, but without any real attachments to their dogmas, he would actually fit my view of kings like Carolus quite well.

Charles XII, also known as Carolus Rex, became King of Sweden on 5th April 1697 at the age of 15, following the death of his father Charles X1. The Great Northern War broke out in February 1700, as neighbouring countries planned to take back territories that they had lost during the swedish expansion of the 1600s. Sweden was attacked on three fronts: by Peter The Great in Russia, Augustus The Strong in Saxony/Poland and Frederick IV in Denmark. They were all convinced that Sweden, led by an inexperienced teenage King, would be easy prey. However, the young King, by then 18 years of age, quickly lined up several victories. The quiet but determined King had been brought up to rule as an absolute monarch. Many of his closest officials and high ranking officers found him hard to understand but he was loved by his soldiers. When they attacked, he was often in the first rank. Charles XII’s bravery, quick wits and unusually good tactical eye made him an outstanding leader in pitched battle. His exceptional ability to infuse courage into his soldiers was another strong contributing factor in the initial triumphs and his army’s high morale in battle. However, he could also appear harsh and callous. A macho culture predominated in his circles, where showing feelings like grief and pain were out of the question. The Swedish army’s treatment of both the civilian population and prisoners of war in Poland and Russia was sometimes extremely cruel. With the King’s consent, there were merciless reprisals - including the torture of children - and mass executions. taken from www.sabaton.net/discography/carolus-rex/carolus-rex-english-version/

He was the Swedish boy king when 3 countrys started the great northern war against Sweden. Russia, Denmark and Saxony (Polen). Sweden was a small country and far less soldiers then it's foes.. To compenzise for than the swedish army adapted their battle tactics.. Look up sabatons song about the swedish coroleans tactics, the coroleans prear. The first battle against the russians the swedish army was just 8000 men against the 40.000-50.00 thousend russian army . Sweden won every battle accept the final battle against the russian empire. The Battle of Poltava was a disaster for a number of courses, The Swedish army had followed the Russian army for months but the Russian just avoided to fight and burned all land when retrieving and left nothing to the starving Swedish army.. The 🇸🇪 Coroleans was about 20.000 men but sicknesses and hunger was slowly decimating the strenght of the Swedish army. The Russians was 80.000 strong and dug in with great fortifications. Even with all those disadvantages the 🇸🇪 Coroleans almost won the battle.. When the Swedes used their shock tactics walking thrue the enemies fire with out firing back untill they could see the white in the enemy's eye, about 20-30 yards. Then drawing their cold steel and unleashing on the enemy. The Russian line was starting to break and panicking spread among the Russians. The Swedish Cavalry was the spearhead of the Swedish forces and at that point they could smashed the Russian line to pieces but because they was lost in unknown territory not more than a mile away they missed that chance.. The king had never lost a battle as commander but in poltava the King was shot in his leg the day before the battle and could not lead the soldiers in the front as usual.

Extra History did a series on him, called the Great Northern War. Basically, his neighbors thought that as a child king, he would be weak and fold easily, so they attacked Swedish lands. King Charles proved to be a very effective and charismatic military leader, and he often personally led his men into battle. He successfully defended his lands against all invaders and even took enemy lands in retaliation, expanding his Swedish empire.

It's hard to pinpoint a character in GoT that would fit Carolus Rex. Though it would probably be Robb Stark or Stannis Baratheon with a few exceptions
    . Absolutely not Joffrey though.
_Charles XII did not drink, he did not spend his time with women, while he executed some very important political reforms and was a skilled politician, this was nonetheless a man who disciplined his mind, body and spirit for a single-minded purpose: War. And in this purpose Carolus displayed unprecedented brilliance. He made the Caroleans (as his army was called) into what was described in his own time as one of the best, if not _*_the_*_ best war machine of Europe._

No, Caroleans was his fathers creation and there tactics was already established before he was king. Not sure what political reforms he made except grinding the Swedish economy into the ground.
He did drink a lot when his cousin Fredrik was in town. He did have a few relapses into drinking but noting that extrema.
When he was in exile in the Ottoman empire after his defeat at Poltava he was scheming and harassing the Sultan into going to war with Russia until he was kicked out and force to return back home.
Coffee was a think in Sweden already but when he returned from the Ottoman empire he introduced it to Sweden on a larger scale. there is some speculation but not confirmed that he also did bring the meatball and cabbage roll to Sweden from his exile.

If you haven’t heard of them, they are three (now two) young Japanese girls with a fantastic backing band playing a fusion of Metal and other genres (mostly (J-)Pop, but you‘ll also find Waltz, Hip Hop, Ska, Reggae, Dubstep, EDM...). It‘s very different and unique, and certainly not everyone‘s cup of tea. But if you are open to the concept, you can have more fun than with any other band. The music is both heavy and catchy, there‘s highly energetic choreographed dancing, they have cool stages and stage presence, it‘s a complete package of entertainment. Their live shows are incredible, but if you choose to give them a try, I‘d recommend the official music video for „Megitsune“. Another song that is of good quality it "et livstid i krig" English "a lifetime of war", but they released a live version of the Swedish version.... open it, enable the caption as it's translated, then just enjoy!

i think it sort of happened ,but lots of land got returned later diplomaticly for favors basicly since if you dont have the manpower to police it ,no point holding it ...although i doubt he saw himself as warmonger since the spark for the war more or lees was other nations backed by a big one thinking ''hey! young new inexperienced king ,great time to invade!'' ...wich is sort of Ironic considering how i heard historians say that in war ,he was excellent...and thanks to him being able to focuse so on it and lead personly capable ministers could handle things at home ,rather then him getting bored and wasting the state finances to entertain himself..so... they practicly gave him the one thing he not hade ...a foe.... ... to be honest ,its the super nations in ther hysteria to invade afganistan & irak could have used reading up on the history of this king by giving him foes to fight ,they lay the ground for generations of devoted soldiers.

He was a “god king” with a heavy warrior culture due to the period of time. He was one of the greatest generals and kings of the time as well, but that’s just my opinion

"All over europe my will shall be questioned by none" yest the Swedish crtown was allied with both England, Dutch, and France.... everyone of these either supported Sweden by either trade /blockades or actual support like in navy. So making Swedish king look like a tyrant is kinda daft.

I'll have to disagree with a lot of the comments here. Carolus was unwell, a megalomaniac. But he has something of a cult following in parts of Sweden. Of course it's hard to judge the characters of historical figures by the standards of today, but even for his times, he was seen as a little "off".

btw were not all kings and monarch "tyrants/dictators" ? Henry the 8th did not seem very gentle :P
When him was ended it also started the end of the swedish warrior nation
