It seems like most airlines use the 22X14X9 measurement threshhold.....so why aren't most luggage companies keeping their products within these numbers?? ...It just baffles me how many nice pieces of luggage are out there, but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on most of them as they are bigger than the measurement standard......

In addition to the bigger size some (like this one) are heavy and do compression which adds even more weight per volume
I wish bags that compress would go in the other direction - smaller
My current checked bag is entirely too big. It always has a ton of space and I’m constantly having to pull stuff out at the airport to meet weight requirements. And my stuff is literally shirts. It’s not like I’m packing it full of electronics and liquids

    Depth: 9" (23 cm)

I put so much research into my hardshell bag for my second and third trips to France and Italy, So many bags advertise international carryon sizes, yet are too big for my preferred carrier, Air France. I dismissed so many bags on external dimensions alone. It was so gratifying to see that my bag fit perfectly into the Air France bag sizer and that I was at-weight for carrying on. Thanks for this and all your other videos, which I have used for trip research, equipment research, and inspiration.
    And I agree--the wheel-stop would be a must-have feature.

      1. It's not a clamshell? Or at least there's a way to use it as a big pocket instead of two? That's why I'm looking at 2 wheel models since I don't like the clamshell.
      2. I wonder what happens to such wheels on rougher terrain. I think they may snap
Anyways, can't get this brand on Amazon, unfortunately :\

My wheels, while not the top brand of wheels, have held up well on a three-week trip around Italy and a two-week trip to three cities in France. This model is one deep tub, with a top lid segment that is for laptops etc. I like it. A friend has another Lojel model that closes with three latches, no zippers, which he says never leaked in downpours due to its type of closure. But that model was a couple of centimeters too big for Air France so I didn't buy it. I like my model, but there are a couple of features I miss: a second handle on the end opposite the main handle, for two-handed lifting out of upper racks; and a bit more sturdy handle. But it has held up well.

HI Nick. We just returned from the UK, and I ALWAYS have runaway luggage! We use a combo of Away luggage and Monos. I am sooo hooked onthe idea of the brakes! I'm not thrilled with the weight due to the Intern'l restrictions. If you ever come across a gadget in the meantime that can serve as an answer for runaway luggage, please post. If I purchase one more suitcase, my husband will kill me. Thanks as always. I follow your channel religiously.

I wish I could have used it. First of all it's very heavy, more than 3 kilos leaves less than 7 KG of weight to use, since the limit is usually 10 kilos, sometimes even 8.. And also - the dimentions are not really for international travel. 50X40X20 CM fits most international airlines.

I had a baggage agent rip me a new one because I had a luggage handle cover with my name inside it. Because it was on the side handle, she said it wouldn’t be seen and I needed to put one on the top handle (where the name tag hole is on this suitcase) When I asked why? My name was already on it, she said ‘Fine!’ And threw my bag in the conveyor belt. After that, I made sure ALL of my family’s bags have name tags on the top. She made me so 😡 mad!
Plus we have electronic bag tags (yes I know, not everyone is a fan but they have spares us from a number of bag tag lines). That would be a good place for it.

Oooh this sounds almost perfect. I'm currently watching every YT video I can to determine the largest (capacity) carry on I can get to become a carry on-only traveller. However, I'm an American living in Ireland so that means I have to take these tiny little Ryan Aer flights to get anywhere off this island and their restrictions are tight. I'd buy this in a heartbeat if I could get away with it...

It's just wrong to advertise this bag as a 'carry-on'. Firstly, it's way too heavy-you're wasting some of your weight allowance before you've even packed it! My carry-on is way lighter. Second, the measurements do not match most airline requirements. If some unsuspecting, uninitiated traveler (ie., someone who doesn't follow this channel), gets to the airport, and they don't accept this bag because it's too big, then what do they do?

Is This The Future of Luggage? - Sadly, No!. I am a very loyal AER SF customer with at least 8 pieces in my inventory and I struggle to make sense of this hard shell luggage. If you are flying on a dual aisle large plane (A380, A350, 787) the larger size bag may not be a problem BUT if your travel is multi-leg where you will be on an Boeing 737, A300 series, or Embraer, you may be forced to check your carry-on as the space will be full or your bag too big for the sizer for smaller planes (especially for low cost or European airlines where bag weight is an issue).
Weight: Aer Lingus and TUI carry on limits: 22 lbs/ 10kg; EasyJet 33 lbs / 15 kg. The small AER Carry-On weighs 8.2 lbs (3.7 kg).
Consider the MUJI 36L hard shell carry-on retails for $189 USD (on sale now for $169) Weighs 2.9 kg (6.4 lbs) has the TSA lock, braking wheels, 2 year warranty, AND has been on the market and upgraded continuously over the last 5-years, I struggle to see a value proposition with the AER hard shell luggage.

The locking feature has been available for a while on luggages like Muji or Delsey Chatelet Hardside+. The reason it didn't catch on is because it adds more weight to the luggage.
I have it on my Delsey Chatelet Hardside+ and I absolutely love it.

I worked for an airline after retiring for about a year. Yes, use a luggage tag but not the type you showed. Those come off in luggage handling a lot. Get a rubberized "plastic" one with a "rubbery" strap, hope that makes sense. Only put your cell phone number on it, not your home address. Bury something in your luggage with contact info as well in case a tag does get broken. Airline luggage tags are pretty durable these days. We'd get lost bags with people who were on vacation and put their home phone number and address on the tag which might help them get their bag after they get home. There have also been instances, rare, in which baggage handlers provided thieves with travelers home addresses, duh, they might not be home.

I’m getting ready to purchase a slightly larger carry on so this is perfectly timed. Did any of the airlines in Europe weigh your bags? I hear this is a thing now, some carriers pushing down to ludicrous weights so I’m curious. This bag coming in a pound higher makes a difference if carriers are getting more strict.

People are so stupid getting hardwired wheeled carry-on. Get done with wheels as 2 times I have had gotten my soft sided legal carry-on sent checked as karens had the wheeled carry-on that was to long and took up too much space and the airline sent my bag down, not the karens. I fly to Asia not Europe especially not to France and Asian airlines and better service and they weight check of 7kg/15 lbs so these hard sided wheeled carry-on is stupid, I guess these karens are in style. They get to many European cities there cobble stone and wheels just do work there. These karens must stay in 4 and 5 star hotels and restaurants. They use taxis and do not walk. Thankfully I do travel near them. Do not use USA domestic airlines. Only Alaska and EvaAir,Singapore Air and Turkish Air. Carry-on only and I am retired
