20 Ways to Prevent Baggage Handlers from Stealing from Your Luggage AND Serial luggage thief caught
Today, I will be diving into a sensitive but crucial topic - the reality of luggage theft at airports, involving baggage handlers and, in rare instances, TSA officers. While the vast majority of airport staff are hardworking and honest, a small number have taken advantage of their positions to pilfer from passengers' luggage. This video aims to inform you about these practices, not to alarm you but to equip you with the knowledge and tips to protect your belongings.

I travel with a backpack in a duffle I always wrap my backpack in a blanket so a simple pop the zipper exploit will be Much harder. I also put a picture of myself with verifiable information (passport number) Inside my bag. I once had to deal with someone who tried to walk off with my bag in Chicago. When baddy tried very hard to say it was his. The cop was leaning toward the baddy. I managed to draw the attention of the cops supervisor, and told them I could prove it was mine. The bet was that if I could prove it was mine, the baddy would go to jail. The baddy described the contents in the usual "pants and shirts" kind of way. Then we opened the bag and there was ME staring back at them. Baddy went off to jail and the cop got a stern talking to by his boss.

I have had countless items stolen from my luggage by TSA. One time they took everything of value leaving behind 8 TSA inspection notices. However of the 79 countries I have traveled in the past 11 year it has only happened in the US.

Countless? I don't believe you. My husband flew constantly for 36 years on the job and never had anything stolen. I haven't either. No one I know has ever complained about theft by TSA. And if you had a theft, how do you know who did it?

I am calling BS on hard case luggage being less prone to theft. The nicer / more expensive your suitcase is, the more prone to theft. I almost had my Rimowa aluminum hard side suitcase taken “by mistake” yeah, right! from luggage claim in La Guardia when I flew in to board Cunard TA cruise. I saw a woman pick it up and start walking off with it, so I immediately went up to her and told her that’s my luggage. She claimed it was hers, but I had my name on the ID, so she claimed it looked like hers. She then immediately walked out away after that.

I think she meant it's less prone to luggage handler thefts of contents. It's harder to access the contents of a hard shell bag. And she does add later to not have an expensive looking bag or luggage tags for theft from the baggage claim conveyors.

Here’s what we do with our luggage tags: we put the full contact info on one side of the paper ID tag, and just our last name on the other side. Then, we put the ID tags into the tag sleeve with just our NAME showing through the window. The way the luggage tags are designed, in order to look at the back side of the ID tag, the luggage tag has to be physically removed from the luggage. Why do we do this? Some nefarious person could conceivably get a glance of the tag, with access to your contact info……which is a way of saying, “Hey, this is where we live, and we’re going on vacation. Come visit our home while we’re gone!”

In regards to 1. TSA locks are the most unsecure security things ever. There are only 2 masterkeys need & you are able to unlock every bag or case that comes your way. Far better off to shrink wrap the thing. The best thing airports could do is to implement the security check before check-in. That way, the checked luggage can go through the scanners & if required, be inspected in front of you. Then, the case gets a security seal sticker slapped on it & there is no need for any further inspections of that case/bag.
From a security standpoint, it's also safer to have bags scanner straight away instead of allowing people to roam through multiple stages with bags.

I put absolutely nothing of value in my luggage. As a woman, I carry a carry-on and a personal item bag. Believe me when I tell you, everything is strategically placed in those bags. I’m going to Alaska in June and you can bet the kitchen sink I’m buying some smoked salmon and it will be going into my carry-on. TSA can smell it, fondle it do whatever they want Besides break the seal, and when they’re done they need to put my factory seal package right back. I’m so mad they stole the person’s pistachios in this comment section, I can’t even get past that right now.

Baggage alarm is worthless at airport baggage claim, as they just steal the entire bag. They won’t bother trying to open it at airport. I now use an AirTag in all my checked baggage. I have an annual travel insurance policy which covers lost / delayed luggage since I have a high end suitcase.

Make a cover case with unique patterns and attractive colors for your suitcase, put in on your suitcase before checking it in. At arrival, it's obviously easy to see your suitcase from afar. Thieves don't like being seen with an attention-getting suitcase.

All those security measures and when you get to your destination, your luggage gets stolen right out of the carrousel. In the US, there's no longer airport personnel who would ensure that the carrier of the luggage was the passenger. Anyone can now steal your luggage and take it away without someone making sure to check the passenger's name against the luggage tag. 😔😠

There are a lot of problems on long haul overseas flights, with carryons. While you are sleeping, someone is going thru your luggage. Always have your carryon, ahead of your eyesight, not behind your seat. Also put your bag, on the other side of the isle. It’s a better view , than being directly in front of your seat, on the same side. I’ve had people try and claim that the overhead, above their seat is their space. I’m watching for a switch. Once I explained the situation, they back down. I do pay extra for early boarding, so I get the proper overhead location. I do carry as much as allowed, with me into the cabin, rather than going just with checked bags. Korean air does not get fussy about an extra kilo carryon. At around 22 pounds, the bag just does not fit under the seat.

Not mentioned but not a security issue is... Do NOT put prescription medication in your checked baggage. If that bag is lost........ If your flight is delayed and you are stuck overnight in an airport and you can't get to your checked bag..... If your bag is stolen.....
20 years ago, I worked reservations for a major airline. At 10 pm (Pac Time), I got a call from a frantic mom. Her 13 year old child had missed his connection in Chicago, and rebooked to a flight in the morning. OK. So far, so good. Winter weather in Chicago causes all sorts of problems. Then came the kicker... His insulin was in his checked bags. my jaw dropped. "Why would you put his insulin in a checked bag?". The reply was "Everyone knows you can't take hypodermic needles in your carry on!". Without any thinking I told her that there would be no way I would get on an airplane without my insulin with me....... So this mom put her 13 year old son onto a flight connecting in a place where the weather had a good chance of delaying flights, and the flight out of Chicago would be the last flight of the day WITH NO BACKUP, and did not think her child was important enough t her to pay for the escort........ And now she expects me to come fromSeattle to open up the closed baggage claim office and find her son's bag..... Right. Put your medications in your carry on.

I used an old, family-inherited but still durable, nondescript-looking, soft-sided suitcase for a long time. It was scuffed and LOOKED old and heavily used. I WANTED it to look like it belonged to a poor person. I'm not one to keep up appearances or show off. During all those years, I never noticed any kind of suspected tampering or opening of the bag. The locks aren’t always relocked! I’ve found them open, but they hadn’t fallen off in handling. The strangest thing I had happen is hard to describe. My suit case is an expedition back pack. Think something only a Sherpa could carry. The shoulder straps are tucked away in their own zipper compartments. Each on has a heavy metal connector. As my bag came onto the baggage carousel the strap was dragging along behind it. Yes, the strap is permanently attached on one end. I still haven’t figured out why it was left out unless it was a theft attempt. My lock also showed it had been opened with a key. I didn’t find the tag tsa puts inside when they search a bag, most likely because I had connected from an international flight. I can understand the straps not xraying well but why leave the strap out to catch on equipment? Thats the only time that the strap has been messed with in about 10 years! There is room to put it back poorly but it’s always been folded well, something that takes a bit more time.

Living in Washington state and travel to Asia through SEATAC Seattle. Returning to Seattle you have to wait on customs and your luggage goes the carousel. Gangs are waiting and pick a bag that people have picked up. The police have no interest as the mayor and council have defunded police and the judicial is vary corrupt and say it is just reparations. Most hard side have zippers and and pen can open it. I use an Monos that doesn't use zippers. There brands less expensive. My carry-on is a backpack without wheels. Gangs at SeaTac??? I’ve lived here since the mid 80s, flown in and out, routinely pick up family members in baggage claim. This is totally BS. The entire baggage area is CCTV with plain clothes officers. If you’d lived here any length of time, you’d know what they looked like. Even in non heavy traffic times, there are always at least 2 in every section.

    • @schoolingdiana9086

@@evaallen9728I’ve been going in and out of SeaTac since the mid 80s. They have plain clothes officers in baggage claim all the time, at least 2 per section, and there are hidden cameras everywhere. The airline is more likely to lose your luggage than to have a luggage incident at the airport. That said, the baggage handling company at SeaTac immediately fires anyone even remotely suspected of tampering with suitcases-there are hidden cameras on them, too. One guy stole an FBI agent’s handgun out of his checked baggage and was in handcuffs 15 minutes later (10 years ago). It’s not hard to figure out who the undercover officers are in baggage claim, either.

About the luggage alarm: how does the alarm “knows” when it should be alarmed? I can imagine all the luggage alarms blaring at the luggage-claim area.
All in all, if the thief quickly takes the luggage bag from the carousel & leave the airport, I feel that there’s not much u can do, gps or not.
