Do it again, CPM 15V Spyderco Manix 2 Factory Edge Test.

- I know the factory edges very important for a lot of people so I did a repeat test.
Some people are afraid about the 15v being too brittle for use. Well, it does have high strength and can handle some light misuse with the factory edge. it's definitely not going to be 3v but 3v is definitely not going to be 15v. all trade-offs of course.
Yeah amazing work bro I've been watching and bs'ing with u for years. I've seen you get better and more educated. Seeing you grow as a knife enthusiast to a maker and now a very good professional maker. It's been cool man. Keep up the great work as well as pushing the boundaries of our hobby.
Seems really tough cutting that rock-like wood and still slicing paper. Good to know. Love the Manix. This will be sweet.
That BBB 15V looks good! 🔥
Thanks Tyler, also you guy gave the best write up on the description on this sprint model, I really appreciate that. Some of the other distributors... Well they did a poor job.
GP knives is carrying them too? Fuck I know who I am buying from now
Hold up? That is your mark on the blade? I’m damn sure getting one! I love your content, congratulations man!
My guy! Little late to the game but hells yeah, just got mine. I remember back in the day when a BOS heat treat was the hotness on some limited production knives. This is like the Gucci BOS for the performance-driven
Will your mark be on all the 15v spydercos? I'm happy for ya man, just knowing you were involved. You have somewhat quietly come so far over the years. Good on ya man
Thanks Shane, yes they will all have this logo on the side
@@FearNoSteel man, that makes it so special. If you know, you know. And I happen to know that you have put in the time, the work, and built relationships with Sal and Eric and advocated for this to come to be, and that BBB wouldn't be on the blade if it wasn't something special. I'm fukn stoked. I'll stop stroking your ego now lol,. I hope they are going to make enough, I hate the thought of the people asking what that logo means even getting one... . I have between 300-350 quality production and custom knives and spyderco is my favorite brand for all the reasons you already know, and I have never been more excited for a knife. I rarely say shit, but I had to say this. Thank you.
Yeah please do I won't be able to lift my head if you keep going haha, but seriously thank you for the nice words I really appreciate it.
@@FearNoSteel - that's awesome man! Congrats!
@@FearNoSteel Any change of a Military in 15v?
I bought the white river knives puuko in s35vn. It's a scandi, a true scandi so take that into consideration, but just simple feather sticking on average wood and the edge looked like broken glass in under a minute on a 200+ dollar " bushcraft" knife. Seeing what you just did is very impressive on such a thin grind. Well done 👏 I took it and gave it a convex grind and haven't had problems since.
The edge could be burnt
@Sir Cassie im pretty sure the geometry was just a bit thin for s35vn. I'm pretty sure it was the first run of their first scandi grind, Gave it a convex and some more meat behind the edge and it's fine now. Bit of a bummer but what ya gonna do? Good call though, that is common with my folders for sure.
@@sircassie891I had an S35vn blade come with some fatigued steel at the edge before. It seems more prone to that
Do you have any idea if Spyderco will be using 15v in their knives going forward? (Besides your sprint-run.) By the way, I luckily scored one of your PM2's and it is fantastic!
Dang I'm glad I was able to order one tonight! Can't wait! And can't wait for the rest of the 15V "family"!
I'd love to see you ie make a video, comparing and contrasting maxamet with 15V. Maybe show off a little for those who say 15V will shatter if you drop it. Just putting it out there as an awesome video where you can shine (cause I saw that video short where you were 'wacking" that board of wood with your 15V - GREAT STUFF
Used 15V, 3V, 9V, and lots of other tough steels making Compaction Tooling for years. Grinding 15V was a PITA. Ewww, memories. Stuff is so damn wear resistant. Quite a few of our customers used it for punches and die liners for that reason. Then if they broke the thinner punches due to the stresses they went to 3V. It will be interesting to see how it performs as a knife blade.
Cool stuff man, thank you for sharing, originally tested the 15v heat treatment from the data sheet which is purely for high wear parts. Well, it was very poor performance so it had to be reworked over the years to focus the heat treatment for knives so we can take advantage of the 23% Vanadium carbide this steel offers, Sal and Eric were kind enough to allow me full access to their heat treatment facility so that I could fully express this custom heat treatment I developed and optimize it for a production batch. So, should be some cool stuff.
Nice that they let you do that. Probably 25 or more years ago when I first ran into CPM15V. Back in those days we had some serious issues with the quality of the stuff. I'm not really sure when it actually came out but when we started using it it was a crap shoot if we didn't run into strange voids and/or pieces of crystal like material embedded in it. Always fun when you had $1500 worth of raw steel that you put 20 or 30 hours into and at one of the last operations on a wire EDM machine a nice little void showed up right on the working surface of the punch ID. The boss just loved that stuff. Fun times. I wasn't the heat treat guy, but I seem to remember some choice words coming out of that department at times. More of an art sometimes than a science.
Man, thanks for sharing, its cool to hear about this history of this steel in that environment.
@@DonsWoodies wow interesting to hear. May i ask what is your profession?
Gawt damn that was impressive, that looked like a shit ton of lateral stress on the edge of the blade and it took it like a fucking champ. Hope to get my hands on this stuff soon, everything is sold out as of now.
god I hope I am able to pick one of these up!
Managed to get one! So sick
That's impressive, congrats brother!
Thanks Josh I appreciate it
I have been comparing D2 to VG10 for stuff I do daily. They happen to be my favorite pocket knives right now. So much to learn. Knives are a fun hobby for me. I sharpen with a wicked edge.
Yes can't wait to use that Steel! I hope it will be available in the future
Huh 15v is available just not in a BBB's sprint run
@@jonahdavis9206 this is true, its an older steel, but it has never been available in a production folder. There are some nuances to the heat treatment to make it function good for a knife that are not in a data sheet
@@jonahdavis9206 yes but I talk about the Manix BBB for Europa. Especially Austria! We probably get everything in 10 years 😂 all jokes aside, but it's not available, and if it's, it's way more Money
@@FearNoSteel true hey that's even cooler that this is a first for production folders. Lol seeing these edge tests is getting me so hype for the release
@@lionknives3 Damn bro I didn't know that, that makes a lot more sense but that's a bummer hopefully you can get your hands on one and for a decent price
Will there be any re-releases on the 15V line for the people who missed the initial drops?! Would really love to appreciate a Manix 2 or Shaman in 15v
It hurts every time I watch this lol. I might finally be able to get some 15v, got a line on a bnib shaman and I’m excited to try it
I feel like if that were M390, you'd now have a serrated edge.
@Big Brown Bear - I (think I) saw you post somewhere recently (Can't find it now) that you sharpen your CPM 15V to 22 degrees per side for CPM 15V.
My 15V P2 came at 16 per side...Would you advise that I dial mine back to 22 degrees per side? (do you use yours tougher than most?) I do tend to dull an edge pretty quick at work (oil industry.)
Yeah man, customize your angle to your needs
Wow, what is the optimal edge bevel ?. For your 15V
Bear, is that "BBB" on the blade from Spyderco? Did you get a sprint run?
Yes. It was in Reveal 11.
Hes also had a Collab in the works since 2019. This was unexpected, though.
@@CNYKnifeNerd did I talk to you on a king cobra jfs or cyrax video or something? Am I mistaken?😂
@@CNYKnifeNerd thank you for sharing this info. cool stuff
beautifull, is it thinner than average manix2 ??? good job man !!!!
No, still production geometry
Its ok i will put an incredible steep bevel on it, but it would be nice if spyderco had bigger balls jajaja!!!!
Impressive, most impressive
Is that the same block you used for your 52100? A dedicated destructo block?
Yeah, nasty stuff
Thanks bro love the channel ❤️
I'm just waiting for the nail chop! 😝🤣
I think the factory Edge would definitely break on that
So mine took a tumble from me dropping it from a 4 step ladder. It fell onto the concrete and bounced around. I screamed as I picked it up to look at the edge, but it was emaculate and looked completely unscathed. The concrete however looked like the Grand Canyon.
Wow
(do not try this at home). That is impressive though!
I just dropped my half open Manix on the asphalt earlier from waist high and heard it bounce off the concrete. It was my LW in M4, not the 15v, but I was still ready to be bummed. Not a scratch on it, not even a roll lol. I got lucky because I’ve dropped knives like that before and it didn’t go as well
I work outside. I like taking 10v or 15v out in the field. 15v more often. A lot of times I’m cutting thru tree branches (semi green new growth) sometimes I will shoot straight thru the smaller branch I am cutting and smack the larger harder piece of wood with the edge. Never once done anything or event scratched the edge
Very cool...
I need it! 😱
So when is this thing going to be released or was it already and I missed it?
They are out there selling out. Be on the hunt
When did this come out?
It's not out yet, BBB is just teasing us with his factory samples.
@@johnscarborough4746 at least he’s letting the knife proles have a glimpse behind the curtain....
@@johnscarborough4746 i don't know nothing 🤣 he works with spyderco now? When it comes out for us regular folks? 🤣
@@krispybeats6615 it showed up in the last Spyderco Reveal but I'm guessing it'll probably hit dealers in the next month or so given the way BBB has been showing it to us.
@@johnscarborough4746 tnx for info 😊 guessing spyderco app will remind us when it drops
15V is laughing like Mark Hamils Joker in this test.
Lmao
I’ll be a hoarder of 15v Spyderco…haha.
Is that a rock you are cutting on? Or some type of metal?
African blackwood give it a try
Wait what??? Since when a 15V spyderco
GG BBB ! :D
is that a block of ebony your whittling on?
African blackwood
Perhaps this test is not hard enough to show the brittleness of this steel?
For what reason, what is shown in the video can be considered a tough test?
That's a tough test for any steel.
@@CNYKnifeNerd Why do you think so?
@@OttoVonChriek try it out.
@@wesleysnider2915 Have you tried it yourself? With what knife? On what steel and with what geometry of sharpening? What result?
@@OttoVonChriek For example a Bark River Aurora with Magnacut. Chipped as fuck while carving hard wood, burnt edge of hell.
Congrats. Is this one of yours?
Yes Sir
@@FearNoSteel Cool, so you did a collab with sypderco? your own heat treat schedule for the 15V the are putting into production in this sprint?
Is that like Lignum vitae or something else?
I believe it's African blackwood
@@FearNoSteel was my guess also :D
Can we do a test for corrosion resistance please?, i live in a costal area were it’s hot and damp most of the year and am seriously considering this steel.
Can we also have a version with DLC?
It is not stainless, it will rust. DLC does not prevent rust and affects the HT on the 15V so No DLC.
@@FearNoSteel i see, thank you for the reply
