What is a Sales Development Representative
A sales development representative is a salesperson whose job it is to generate leads with prospects. An SDR may do sales prospecting activities such as cold email, LinkedIn, and cold calling. The whole goal of the SDR is to schedule meetings for account executives. Sales development reps are also the same as business development reps. Companies can use both terms interchangeably.
Do You Need Any Prior Experience To Start as a Sales Development Representative
Suppose you are graduating college or looking to make a career switch. In that case, the good news is that you don't need any prior experience to become an SDR. It doesn't matter what you majored in at college or what kind of jobs you've done in the past. Some skills you will need to have or be willing to learn is people skills, soft skills, emotional intelligence, basic writing skills, and the ability to talk on the phone. As long as you have general people skills, you can learn all these skills on the job.
How Much Does a Sales Development Rep Make?
A sales development rep can make an annual salary from $40,000 to $70,000. SDRs also get paid commission and bonuses based on hitting quota. Most good SDR roles get paid an OTE (on-target earnings), your base salary combined with your commission if you hit 100% of your quota.
How To Find Sales Development Rep Jobs
To find a sales development job, you can look on job boards like Angel, where startups post-sales jobs regularly. Some startups are willing to give equity as a new sales hire. You can also find sales development and business development jobs on LinkedIn. Additionally, suppose there's a company you really like. In that case, you can go directly on their career page to see if they have any SDR job openings.

Thanks!
Great content 😊
thanks!
Thanks for your videos, they are helping me make a decision on wether or not to accept an SDR offer. Question: How many appointments per month will I be required to book? It's a small company.
daeym... now I'm going to resign from my current work as a SDR here in the Philippines... salary in the US is much more than in the Philippines... I'm just wasting my time
Hi Patrick, thank you for your video . you are very helpful . could you pleases make video about interview questions and answers for sales development representative ? or suggest the source? many thanks
Hey, I have a few videos on Interview QnA on my channel. I'll be releasing an updated one in the near future. You can check the old videos in the meantime. Best of luck!
The company that I interviewed with said they would pay be commission for every demo that was booked by the account executive. Should I be getting a bonus every time a set up an appointment with an account executive too?
I have a question please
If you work in selling online marketing solutions for businesses where they can grow their business online and you manage the sales team and managers, train and help in interviewing , mentoring and coaching and also work with the account managers , also with the technical department that they work on the clients campaign to insure customer is happy and help in giving solutions if the customer is unhappy , what would be this role called , director of sales development ???!
Can you do this independently? Meaning you have your own SDR business where you do that for several companies and only get paid a small fixed rate and/or the leads you bring in ?
following up, how much was your OTE at Oracle?
You can search that up on glassdoor under salaries
how much did you make at oracle
Thank you Patrick I’m so glad I found this. I did Course Careers class but couldn’t pass their supervised, no notes, no interruptions test. So they won’t show me their list of partner companies and I’ve got to just job hunt on my own.
Would you recommend course careers?
I have been getting offers from SDR training academy such as SV Academy. SV Academy offers to train and hook you up with a company that pays over $70k per year. The catch is that you must pay a hefty amount if the academy finds you a job that pays over $45k in the amount of $10,000. 4 weeks of SDR training and a job hook up for $10,000. Is this really necessary? Is there a better way to train myself to land this position?
You could take some sales training online and apply yourself as an entry-level SDR. It's not necessary to go through a bootcamp if you don't want to. But they may help when it comes to finding and getting job interviews. You can also try recruiting agencies that specialize in SDR placement as well.
Do you have to be 18 or older?
No everybody. Who you wannna hit with 👊👊
Do you need a degree for this position
