This is the beginning of one of my favorite albums of all time. Seriously, this album is a full experience from beginning to end. When you find out what the concept behind it is and the fact that Skye was Brann Dailor's (drummer) little sister who committed suicide, it brought me to tears when I was on LSD. Just amazing and it stands the test of time.

The song Crack the Skye is about Brann’s sister. The album concept is about a guy stuck in the astral plane being guided home by Rasputin.

hey hey ; thanx for the reaction ; Mastodon's such a great band !!! 3 singers in one track is awsome too.Oblivion's taken from their most "proggy" LPs "Crack the Skye" (the last baron is a must) - hope you'll do a full album reaction on their last (double) LP "hushed & grim" probably the best double LP since "mellon collie" of the Smashing Pumpkins IMO

If you haven't heard it yet, try and listen to W.A.S.P.'s 1992 concept album (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crimson_Idol#Concept) "The Crimson Idol": ua-cam.com/video/XVSqRZt7d6w/v-deo.html.
Blackie Lawless' vocals are the poop emoji.

You can call me 'Mystic Meg' because I predict deez tings 'Mastodon' 😛
The Czar is for me a modern progressive metal masterpiece!
“Oblivion” happens to be the catchiest, most melodic song Mastodon’s ever done. Of course Mastodon makes even melody complicated. The song also features dueling vocals and harmonies from Hinds and Sanders who have both become more than competent with their singing abilities and grown immensely since Blood Mountain. The song coalesces in a technical guitar passage that leads into an absolutely epic guitar solo before going into a break down.
It's great that the band is still developing, expending their unique style, by adding new elements.
As you might expect from an album named after one of the more obscure 1970s progressive rock bands (Crack the Sky, no "e" on the Sky), this Mastodon album has a certain nostalgic vibe to it - right down to the vocals which sound a lot like Sabotage-era Ozzy Osbourne. (Indeed, if you Crack the Skye do you get a Hole In the Skye?).
The music on Crack the Skye is fairly technical and progressive, also synthesizing many elements, including classic space and progressive rock (Pink Floyd) and the very best of parts of the past 40 years of heavy music. You can hear the guitar harmonies of '70s hard rock bands, the '80s heavy metal (Randy Rhoads era Ozzy), and the sludge metal of the '90s too (Neurosis mostly).
The clean vocals a cross between Peter Gabriel and Ozzy Osbourne.
This is also the first album where drummer Brann Dailor sings. His delicate, elegant and graceful voice will become a key element to Mastodon.
"mathemathical" category the evolution and experience adquired since Blood Mountain is significant if not more. It does slow the tempo just a bit, but it does contribute to form them much more, and gives them a voice that's coming to be more and more unique. The production in general is multi-layered and eccentric, full of odd psychedelia and subtle. It appears the album has a astral projection concept. With elements of Sabbath, Pantera, Maiden and even Tool, Mastodon have found a way to blend all their influences together but still keep a sound original identity.
This may be the band's most ambitious effort to date. For the most part, the heavier aspects and harsher vocals of the band's past have been discarded in favor of more melodic guitar playing and a cleaner vocal performance. How unified the vocals sound on this album in comparison to past albums, It really helps in defining the band's individual sound and may be helpful in getting the band a wider fanbase. However, there are still a few moments to be found and Neurosis vocalist Scott Kelly lends some particularly vocals on the title track is incredibly satisfying to listen (in the record, of course) that a band that promises so much to be fulfulling themselves, taking their time and carefully thinking before taking a single step into the recording studio. The use of varied instrumentation, technical riffing, varied drum tempos, and variations on the same clean vocal style make this album a true gem.
Beyond the observed musicality of the album,
I also find that the band's inspiration is something to be admired.
Mastodon has a history of elaborate metaphor in their music, not the least of which being the band ascending a mountain while being pursued by a cycloptic sasquatch to place a crystal skull at the top in place of the band’s struggle to rise through the ranks of the major labels.
The lyrics are also a huge improvement compared to other albums.
The story that they tell and the passages from certain texts the band cites, and just the overall story of the thmes are very captivating.

      (The Elephant Man)
Mastodon also released a full-album instrumental reddition version of 'Crack The Skye'.
