Greg Stovie may be Scottish, but Berwick is in England. A border town, Englands most northern, it has over the centuries been Scottish and English. It has been in England since 1482.
I love the way you played the romantic piano music when you took a bite of those potatoes and sausage! What a wonderful frame of mind you have assisted in this morning!
Hahaha!!!! What a legend! Completely the wrong way to make stovies though! If you want a lesson from a real Scottish highland lass I'm happy to reveal my secret recipe!
Hi there...northern Geordie here...been looking for a proper stovie recipe after having them on a wee island in the Highlands...lovely lasses front room...never forgot the taste😋😋..never could get the peppery gloopy goodness just right.😢...that was twelve years ago 😂..so if you would still like to share I'd be delighted to try it...please..!! 🙏😋😊
What the fudge Greg, just you get that garlic away fa ma stoves. I really think stoves and be mostly anything that is meat scraps, onion, and tatties no garlic .... never garlic. Lots of pepper and some salt. It should also have a nice broken potato thick constancy as it not stew but more a rough paste. Thanks for the video it was a lot of fun
Looks great. I think I would add some plain flour to the onions once they are done and make a roux then add the stock. I think it's tonights dinner. Thanks Greg.
Nope. With stovies you don't make a roux or gravy. What you do is fry your onions until they're starting to brown then add in your chopped potatoes. Add in your meat and about 1 tbsp of water then cover and cook on a long low heat. No idea what Greg has done here but... it's not stovies. Not by a long shot. He made a sausage casserole.
Loved the "Scottish" accent, with a touch (98%) Irish ;) As you say, you can use most meats, I've had them with sausage, mince, corned beef and even chunks of rump steak. I cook the spuds and crush them, cook everything else together (nowhere close to that amount of liquid), put it all together and eat... What you had was more of a stew. Still looked ok though
David Wardle i always put in half the tautties and then cook until soft, then add the rest and cook. it lets the first lot break up and thicken the liquid instead of just relying on the gravy granules. my gran used to say if your wooden spoon can stand up in it it’s perfect 😂.
G,day Greg.I made my version today in my Kogan multi cooker on slow cook mode.I added pots, onions cabbage with the snags.Aqua and beef cubes.Finished with 2 pkts, of hearty beef cup o soup to thicken and season. So yummy.
This reminds me a lot of an Irish dish called "Coddle." It has everything you have in this dish, but there's also some carrots and bacon in it. I'll be making this for sure!
Hi!! I'm back to your channel. Mmmmmm... That taste so good. I love that potatoes. That taste so delicious and creamy dish. With rice taste great. Great dish. See u next time.
Hi Greg great video mate since youve been to Singapore I was wondering if you happen to know how to make singapire noodles if you do would love to see a video how to make it
From America, so never heard of this, but, it does look good. This seems like a cross between a casserole and a stew. There’s a thin line between a stew and a soup so I’d say it’s somewhere in the middle of those two and you could thicken it up with some corn starch. Biscuits would do well with it . Good job, Grego.
We use flour and Browning gravy Brown and not gravy mix. Things like Gravy Master or Kitchen Bouquet or whatever you have there to make things darker it's just a small bottle of caramel coloring with a little flavor. My dad always put in a splash of Worcester sauce. This is also better the next day. And we always ate The Leftovers on toast. Isn't it lovely? People bitch about British food but Scottish food is up there with some of my favorites.
Recipe for stories.. anything u got ..basically mince and tatties and anything else you got Neeps will and onions an.well anything (except for your lrish version of a Scottish accent, away and watch Trainspotting or the drama 'Just a Boys Game',highly recommend both Pepperdog181@gmail.com 🐶 Glasgow 1😎
Your Stovie looked pretty good. We used to make it with deer meat or buffalo. either way...we would fry the meat first then fry the onions. put them with sausage. then with the drippings make your gravy. Add veggies last. Its also good using fish.
Wouldn't make that shite use square sausage peel tatties use more onion idiot made it to thin because he didn't peel tatties to that guy I say dont give up yer day job
Not only did he get it wrong that Berwick is in Scotalnd (it's on the English side of the border) but then he did an Irish accent. Oh my, you Aussies are hilarious.
Tell you the honest truth Greg.... this is one of the first times I have ever seen garlic used in a Scottish recipe. My late grandma was from Dundee, Scotland. My late stepfather was from Aberdeen. My sister lives just outside Glasgow. In Scotland, people go crazy for square sausage, mince and tatties 😋and PROPER stovies and then there's haggis, neeps and tatties!!They also like Gregg's the bakery. I'm not saying a word!!👍 Now show us how to make AND EAT a deep-fried Mars bar!!
Berwick-Upon-Tweed is in England 😝 I thought Mel Gibson’s Scottish accent was pish until I heard yours 🤣 All of that aside, your stovies look the dog’s bollocks. I like mine a bit “watery” and served in a proper bowl so I can dip heavily buttered bread in. 10/10 mate 👍🏻 🏴
Hi Grego! I've watched tons of your videos and think your awsome and funny . 😁 Will you consider instapot cooking or pressure cooking of any kind? I can cook very well but just enjoy watching you, you cheer me up. 💘 Also More Gregos homemade music please. 🎼🎶🎵 Love your style. If your ever in the USA let's hang out 😊✌💝
Bloody hooligan! There's NO place for garlic in stovies! My mum's recipe was minced beef, sausages, onions, potatoes and a couple of stock cubes. I didn't taste anything garlic until the 70's and I love it but NOT in stovies! Cheers Greg! :)
Fry lots of onions, carrots and a parsnip or 2 and a few bay leafs salt and plenty of black pepper in a pan until things are smelling good onions should be soft keep the heat low , Throw in some fatty beef mince get it all lovely and brown , Throw in some peeled potatoes add water to just half way up potatoes Pop a kid on the pan and cook it slow for at least an hour give it a stir it’s done when the potatoes are soft stir it up that will make it thick season to taste . It’s better the next day !!
Thats nothing like stovies Geoff. I used to live in Edinburgh and had them often. Keep up the good work mate !
gday
Greg Stovie may be Scottish, but Berwick is in England. A border town, Englands most northern, it has over the centuries been Scottish and English. It has been in England since 1482.
Bears no resemblance to Stovies or Scotland in any way.
Spot on Stig.

Berwick-upon-tweed (spoken as Berrick on tweed) is in England, a couple of miles from the jock border 👍

No the starch from the potatoes are the thicker, cook them till they break up.
find the proper recipe it is not at all watery
The first rule of making this is don't spit in the pot while doing your Scottish accent.

Whats the liquid thing and canned powder stuff
Honestly a better recipe than the stovies recipe i seen done by a scotsman...who didn't use stock or gravey ...this is much better.👍😉 very nice.😀
This is not stovies, not even before the various alteration he made, and Berwick (say, Ber-ick) is not (technically) in Scotland.
Not only did he get it wrong that Berwick is in Scotalnd (it's on the English side of the border) but then he did an Irish accent. Oh my, you Aussies are hilarious.
Sorry but that's not stovies, love from Scotland 🏴
Greg, I am a big fan. I have a dish that I would like you to rate, I was wondering how do I send you the recipe?
you leave it in a comment here or send it to my email
Thank you, I'll send you the email.
Hey Greggo Berwick-upon-Tweed isn't in Scotland it's in England but i'll let that minor error slip for some Stovies!
close enough to the scottish border.
craig tiffany Absolutely, I can let it slide.
Berwick Rangers FC play in Scottish league though
Paul Carey Us Aussies don't know that.
I photographed them playing Cowdenbeath at the weedend... Got beat 4-0
first time ive seen wattery stovies and having sausages in
Stepy D go to any authentic local pub that has a Saturday football team and a pot of stovies 🤣🤣🤣
Ah sausage stovies...
In NE scotland we dont use sausages or square sausage we use the left overs from roast beef.

I'm struggling with the idea of making stovies with palm trees out the kitchen window! Stovies are a wet Wednesday in February dish 😊👍
Berwick-upon-Tweed is in England and the accent was from Ireland.
Your Scottish accent is more like an Irish accent Greg LOL :P :D
Stovies ? Stovies are made with beef dripping and tatties are mushy
As a Scottish Highlander......garlic in stovies?! No. Just no. Love you otherwise! ;)
