This dryer is identical to one handed down to us Easter weekend. My wife used it one day and it stopped working. I watched this video 4 days ago, in some parts repeatedly, to dismantle and diagnose my dryer. You make it too easy. My issue was the high-limit thermostat. I ordered it along with 2 new light bulbs, a set of glide slides (mine were all worn and/or broken), and a small dryer cleaning kit on Amazon for less than $40. I cleaned it out then reassembled it. I admit, I did have to rewatch the part where you took off the belt so I knew how it went back on. You saved me probably hundreds of dollars. Thanks!
When testing any device within the dryer in resistance or continuity mode on your meter like the fuse or the start switch, make sure the dryer is uplugged. You do not want to test devices in the dryer circuts in that meter mode with any power present.. use great care when doing testing procedures require the power to be on allways check the mode your meter and make sure its set to measure AC voltage and is not set in continunity mode. when measuring for voltage present .. most of the devices in a dryer can be tested in resistance or contunity mode with the dryer unpluged.. (dont just turn the breaker off , unplug it) Some of the edges of the metal cabinet are very sharp take precauations to not cut yourself ..
This video is spot on, saved me the cost of buying a new dryer! I followed the diagnostic and found the thermal high limit to be defective. I also tested all components to be sure they were working correctly. 12 bucks to replace high limit fuse/sensor. 12 dollars fixed my dryer and I was able to avoid forking out 500.00 or more to replace my dryer. Ben does a great job with this video and made this very easy to follow. Thank you Ben, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and allowing folks like me to benefit from your willingness to post the most comprehensive information I have found on this subject in all of UA-cam!
I want to thank you for this video. I fixed the unit myself for less than $50 thanks to you. It took more time to go out and get the part than it did to make the repair. You saved us at least $250 in a service call/repair and probably much more as the unit is 11 years old and we thought “let’s just go buy a new dryer.” Can’t thank you enough. When the internet is used for good purposes, such as this, it truly is wonderful. Wishing you the best.
after replacing the ignitor and coils on my GE gas dryer, the thing wouldn't start back up. so i had to take it all apart again. it wasn't until the final test outlined in the video that i found the culprit--the infernal door switch. the INCREDIBLY poor design made the contacts not line up with the connector when i was putting the machine back together after the initial repair. the contacts on the switch are paper thin prongs which are easily pushed aside by the wire harness if you're not careful while reconnecting. thank you, Ben.
Thank you so much for this video.... You saved me a lot of time and money. I took your advice and checked out the middle knob and start button... I took the start button off and tried starting with out the button. IT STARTED!!! So i cleaned it and reinserted and IT STARTS!!!! If it wasn't for your troubleshooting my pockets would be empty. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!
Thanks for a great video that helped us troubleshoot and diagnose an issue with our GE dryer ourselves. You were thorough and clear and that's much appreciated as I run the video as my husband follows the steps.
is the timer the rotating switch that says time dry? mine is seems not calibrated any more it does not like progress when running or it does not run at all. maybe it is indeed the point of failure do you have a part number?
Ben You might want to advise to unplug the unit before removing the back plate. Just in case they lose their grip on it and drop it onto the terminals. Unlikely, but better safe than sorry. Love your videos by the way.
First video I found saying you should hear a click (~13m mark) when engaging the idler pulley, I had it “in” but not touching that switch properly, thanks!
This was so helpful. I have this model and all of a sudden my start button wouldn't respond. Removing the starter button and pressing the starter switch solved my problem. Thanks for posting!
Ben's the BEST ................ Thank You for all you share. Sorry, I had to add the video is just not the same with your Maytag outfit, hope they didn't give your grief over it.
I just want to say thank you for your tutorial. I’m that guy that will try to fix something before I buy a new unit. You saved me 1000 dollars. 😏, I don’t if it was that much( because I never checked), but my dryer works and I spent $20. Thank you very much!
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to show us how to do this! I was able to replace my dryer's belt using your video. Keep up the great work.
Steve the appliance guy here after you go through all the things mentioned in this video I will tell you flat out that GE dryers are notorious for having the following two problems not mentioned in this video ( but maybe he mentioned them in another video??). If you've tried to fix your dryer through everything mentioned in this video from thermostats cut off door switch timer and start button and your dryer still doesn't work it's more than likely the following 2 items not mentioned in this video. #1 ge dryer are Notorious for BAD KNOBS which turn but are not actually turning the timer shaft because you will find taking off the knob that it is cracked or broken and needs to be replaced.#2 GE dryer are also notorious for bad motor or bad motor contacts and will cost you some money to have it repaired unless you find a full motor and housing assembly on eBay which makes the repair much easier and less expensive. I'm very lucky here in Vegas as we have a ton of eBay's that sell good used working parts for short money😊
Yea mine has a bad start winding. I can get it going if I tape the door switch and spin the drum but other than that it doesn’t work. Checked everything else before I spend a lot of money and everything is working good. Was hoping it was the door switch😂
My ge profile dryer is 22 years old and is remarkably similar to this one inside. The one difference is the door harness has individual wire terminals and not a block plug. I’ve had to solder a new terminal on it.
They haven't changed them much at all, just like many Whirlpools out there. And you are 100% right. The door harness was way better designed on the older GE's since each wire can be removed. This door switch is identical to a Samsung or Whirlpool switch, other than how the harness attaches.
Awesome, thanks. My door was bent not depressing the safety sensor enough to start. I just bent the door a bit and now it engages that sensor enough for it to start.
Thank you! I popped the start button off and pressed but the button pushed into the head I'd the dryer, I'm assuming now that is the issue for a no start. My dyer has had issues starting for 2 years. I would have to push onto the door and press the start button. I appreciate your guidance!
Thank you i found my problem in the first minutes of the video... The timer knob is cracked and was stuck of off -_- thx a lot buddy now I don't have to call a repair guy
My dryer looks like that in the back and I'm trying to locate the thermal fuse. I see yours was in the that cut out in the back lower, but mine isn't there. Do I have to take the back off to access the thermal fuse? Thanks
I watch your videos even though you may not work on my particular brand just in case i happen to get another brand appliance in the future. Although i do think my future appliances may be used
I RARELY work on GE's, but the issue here being is that literally only 1 company has videos on these, and thats it. So unless you know whats bad and needs fixed, thats all you got. So I figured I'd correct that.
You’re videos really helped me save a ton of money

If it's the switch on the door you should be able to feel it not making contact as it closes. When it's good you'll feel and hear a light click, if it's bad it will just depress and thats all
Thank you for the video! It was very useful in trying to diagnose my dryer on my own. Unfortunately I couldn't find my issue. Could you give me a hint? I have a GE GTD42EASJWW that won't even attempt to start when I press the power button. But when I tested the start button for ohm's, the start button worked perfectly (the dryer still didn't start, though). I took the top and front off and found now obstructions and the dryer belt was in good condition. Any hints would be helpful, thank you!
Those shots are always the worst to do, but the most needed. If I ever do a video with a dryer idler pulley, its always the most-viewed segment, always. Hopefully the shots take the mystery out of those darn things.
My 2023 ge dryer doesn’t have the fuse below the wires on the bottom backside where would it be? Also my dryer was running but shut off and won’t turn on. I have it completely apart and everything tested ok. Why won’t it turn on?
Working on one just like this. I’ve tested the resistor. No reading on it. And tested both of the thermostat switches. The two bigger wires have resistance. But test the two smaller wires and no resistance. Everything else has passed testing. Am I on the right track? The only thing not tested is the motor.
Mr.Ben I have a GE dryer the belt was broke I replaced the belt after putting it back together I tried to start it wouldn't do anything after checking I found it will only start in extended tumble what do I need to look at I was thinking timer I replaced it but has same issue.
Mine stopped working out of nowhere, no noise, nothing. I cleaned it and changed out the timer switch since I noticed before that the knob would "wind" when turned. Now, it makes a noise once plugged in but smelled like something was burning after pushing "start" but no smoke, kind of like melting plastic/wires. I unplugged it, opened and checked and nothing looked melted, everything looked good. Any ideas?
howdy. I have the exact same dryer and it seems that the drying cycles button (rotating switch is not longer calibareted. When i turn it on it does not move and sometimes it does not turn on all . Also when i manager to make it start it does start where the "off" indications are. I tried to remove the ratating switch which does not seem to be damaged but it does not make a difference. DO yuo think that switch is the culpit and needs to be replaced? thanks for input
What if the black piece that the timer knob attaches to broke off? Is there a piece for that. I went ahead and bought the timer knob but a little piece broke off
My timer knob is very hard to turn(not broken) and for example i put in on the 20min setting it jumps back to off, it won't turn on. Does this mean the timer needs replacing
I have this exact same dryer and only had it for about 4 months. Out of nowhere it's no longer heating. Drum moves, vent is clean both outside and near the back of dryer. Any suggestions
in my case i had a wire disconnected from the terminal on "signal on/off". and turned out that red wire that was disconnected was feeding motor. I got that dryer for free from someone and that person tried to fix broken knob... and for what ever reason he disconnected that wire and never plugged back in....
I can't remember offhand what is in the line of that resistor is, if its heat or the motor, but if its off spec from the schematic, it definitely needs replaced.

stuck tooth pick in switch hole 3 or 4 times-I saw a teeny tiny bit of black lint, BINGO- two minute fix, God bless you for your work.

@ 13:42 This saved me. During disassembly the pulley popped out and I couldn't figure out how why the washer wouldn't start. Thank you!!!!!!!
2 minutes into this video and my dryer came back on. Eternal blessings to you and yours my good brother. 🥹😄😄
It was my power button thanks man. This video got down to many details save you money.
It was my start button. Danke so much. 2 minutes in and you saved the rest of my day off.
I replaced the timer on my GE dryer yesterday. Cost $100 but that's after 8 years of service. I'll be happy if it lasts another 3 years. 4:47 🤞
The one in the video is a 2016 model. So 6 years and just a $15 door switch. Not a bad deal. Their dryers aren't too bad
Was the light coming on when you opened the door?
is the timer the rotating switch that says time dry? mine is seems not calibrated any more it does not like progress when running or it does not run at all. maybe it is indeed the point of failure do you have a part number?

I TOTALLY forgot to unplug and dropped… 🤦🏼♀️ so I made a spark… now I think I have to fix another one my wires…

This video definitely helped me, i had way too much lint build up in fan and motor. After cleaning it thoroughly it started up no problem.
Glad it helped

My guy! my apt complex maintenance is so slow and lazy that i was able to troubleshoot my dryer myself with your help
Nice!
Thanks for this!! Wash SO close to ordering a new dryer until I checked this out. Easy $20 fix
Within a couple of minutes, I fixed mine. It was just the button on mine. Got lucky. Thanks to the video
Thank you so much! I found out it was the start button. Dryer works fine and I can fix it myself. Thank you again!
Thank you for this video! I walked through everything with you and found out that my door switch wasn’t connected to the three wires 😂🙄

I appreciate your guidance!
As simple as a cracked timing dial. Thank you, Ben!
Happy to help!
No offense but how did you not feel it when you turned it?
Probably the same way you failed to recognize that your hairline is gone, nerd.
Awesome!! Second trouble shooting test worked! Saved me $$ and time getting a repairman out, thank you!!
You saved my bacon! It was the timer switch and your video was so easy to follow, thanks!

Start windings going bad but I know now thanks to you. Appreciate that
Your video saved me so much stress and likely a lot of money. The issue turned out to be a jammed start button lol. Great video! Cheers!
Nice glad it helped!
Thank you i found my problem in the first minutes of the video... The timer knob is cracked and was stuck of off -_- thx a lot buddy now I don't have to call a repair guy
Thanks I wiggled the plug and it started working. will take the outlet apart later and check it. Thanks for the info!!
My dryer looks like that in the back and I'm trying to locate the thermal fuse. I see yours was in the that cut out in the back lower, but mine isn't there.
Do I have to take the back off to access the thermal fuse?
Thanks
I can’t find mine either ???
Just wanted to say I love your content-- I've learned a lot. Thanks for posting.
Thanks!
I wish I could give you a thousand likes. I had my Mom's dryer halfway apart when I decided to watch your video. My timer knob was stripped. 😁
Thanks for your help brother..You're the best and I will highly recommend your channel..my dryer now is perfectly working properly.
Thank you, Ben! We haven't had this dryer long, and now it isn't work. 🤦🏽♀️
It was the cracked knob, use pliers and turned back on. Thank you so much.
Thankyou for this video. My problem was the start button… I removed button cover pushed start and it worked. So I’m leaving it off lol
Thank you so much. Mine problem found in your video . Was the starter button. I fixed it thanks to you 😊

Interesting that it looks like we have the exact same dryer but our fuse + connections are not located where yours are? Model # GTD42EASJ2WW
You’re videos really helped me save a ton of money

😜✌️ Nice internal camera action Brother, very helpful 😁 God Bless us All 🇺🇸🙏✝️
Those shots are always the worst to do, but the most needed. If I ever do a video with a dryer idler pulley, its always the most-viewed segment, always. Hopefully the shots take the mystery out of those darn things.
This video is very well presented. Thank you and good job!
Thank you sir 🙏 you are a godsend! My dryer now works it was the knob like you have said!!!
Excellent video...very detailed. Thanks for helping me fix my dryer!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome video. Was able to troubleshoot in 2 minutes
Number 1 problem on that dryer is the timer knob cracking.
THANK YOU for taking so much time to make these detailed video's.
Glad you like them!
Love your videos, super helpful and informative!
Thanks!
Excellent, as always Ben. Thank you for sharing
found out it was my timer/knob 😅 after this video.🎉
That was a great teardown! I can’t find the link for the dryer cleaning kit you used.
My apologies, here it is: bens-appliances.com/products/appliance-cleaning-kit-for-refrigerators-and-dryers
My 2023 ge dryer doesn’t have the fuse below the wires on the bottom backside where would it be? Also my dryer was running but shut off and won’t turn on. I have it completely apart and everything tested ok. Why won’t it turn on?
Thanks to you..fixed my dryer today😊
Great 👍
Working on one just like this.
I’ve tested the resistor. No reading on it. And tested both of the thermostat switches. The two bigger wires have resistance. But test the two smaller wires and no resistance. Everything else has passed testing.
Am I on the right track?
The only thing not tested is the motor.
So I have the exact same dryer it comes on for a min and turns off. What do you think that is?
Mr.Ben I have a GE dryer the belt was broke I replaced the belt after putting it back together I tried to start it wouldn't do anything after checking I found it will only start in extended tumble what do I need to look at I was thinking timer I replaced it but has same issue.
Great video and you explain it very well.
This was great. Thank you.
Thank You Second Step Worked For Me !!
Thank you, I just found my dryers issues, a broken belt.
nice!
Hmmm no hat- who are you and what have you done with Ben?- very informative videos keep them coming,
fix my dryer in 15 seconds took my longer to comment thank you
Still valid and good instructions
I have this exact same dryer and only had it for about 4 months. Out of nowhere it's no longer heating. Drum moves, vent is clean both outside and near the back of dryer. Any suggestions
I made a video on how to check everything involving heating. If its only 4mo old, it should be under warranty.
Shouldn’t one end of the fuse be disconnected when checking with meter?
Do you happen to have any information on this model: GTD65EBSJ4WS
Should be very similar to this other than the display/control board. I will make a video on it though when I have one handy
Very clear explanation
in my case i had a wire disconnected from the terminal on "signal on/off". and turned out that red wire that was disconnected was feeding motor. I got that dryer for free from someone and that person tried to fix broken knob... and for what ever reason he disconnected that wire and never plugged back in....
I need help , i have exact model ,switch was broken i pushed and worked then switch fell inside and arcked
Thank you, it was a stripped knob for me
Ben, 😊do you still have a shop in town?
in Circleville, yes
my timer knob is cracked and no clicking sound when turning. but tried to turn with pliers but won't turn. Should it turn with pliers?
Should yes
@@bensappliancesandjunk Yes. I finally got it to move and dryer is working. Ordered timer. Many thanks.
New timer put on and solved the no power issue.
My drawer makes the noise like it’s goi g to start but won’t turn the clothes to dry it’s heating up tho button won’t stay on??
Could the resistor by the timer make dryer not turn on I tested for continuity and got nothing and I ohm it out and was not in range
I can't remember offhand what is in the line of that resistor is, if its heat or the motor, but if its off spec from the schematic, it definitely needs replaced.
What size belt?
