I was searching everywhere trying to figure out why my shotgun mic was not being recognized. You are the only person who explains turning on the Phantom power. Everything works now!
I love this damn thing, it’s like the Swiss Army knife of recording devices, but with very few compromises. I have a far more expensive Apollo interface but I find that I use this more often just because it’s so versatile.
just got new Mac mini m1 and needed audio interface since my old gear uses firewire.. just happened to have the H6 I use for film/video.. now you showed me I can work for my audio stuff. Life saver bro! Thanks a million!
Thanks a lot for this information! I've been trying to use my zoom h6 as an audio interface in pro tools using a pc for 2.5 years, but it never worked. After using a mac for 14 years and it running seamlessly I've gotten so many gray hairs trying to get it working on pc, but ended up frustrated after the DAW kept crashing and crashing. I had nearly given up and was about to sell my pc to purchase another mac, when I tried switching to only using the stereo input and only using battery mode on the zoom to power it today. And VOILA it works! Thanks for a great video , it made me rethink the entire thing :)
Nice setup if your getting into recording. Thank you for the explanation and making this video very easy to understand. I'm also looking at options Zoom L12- L20 for live recording but also the recording onto SD card at the same time the signal is sent with the DAW.
I agree, this was fun to try and yeh it did work. Can i ask a question? I am looking for a rack where i can mount the zoom and two rodelink so i can be portable on my shoots, do you have any recommendations? saw a bunch of videos but they are too cumbersome. Thanks
I don't use a rack so I can't say. I'll use a U shaped stabilizing handle sometimes like this one ua-cam.com/video/I6xQ0RIXOrY/v-deo.html you can put a triple hotshoe adapter on the top mount and be pretty portable.
Thank you for the great video instruction. It's so helpful in my learning. I have a question I can't find an answer to: Can the Zoom H6 act as a mixing board, not recording, but sending multiple tracks from the computer out to multiple speakers? I'm asking for a sound installation, as I'm not sure I'll need to find more equipment for it, other than my Zoom H6. Thank you!
Perfect. Thank you for the video. I was about to buy the Rode complete studio kit with interface but this has shown me that I don’t need to. Great video and I’m sure I’ll come back to it again. 👍
This very helpful, big thanks for that Trying to figure out same with the Android mobile, as I can connect to as interface thorough OTG. But than, how I can get the sound out? i.e for meetings/conferencing on Android, I would like to use H6 for broadcasting and also want to get out sound from participants to let's say headphone or speakers. Not for the recording especially but live conversation by the help of H6. Have you done this setup?
Yeah it should be the same. But you don't need to use it as an audio interface unless you want to record to a DAW instead of the SD card. If you are not livestreaming it and need computer sound, the best way is to use it standalone IMO. Transfer the files to a DAW for comp, eq, limiting, etc... and upload and/or sync to video.
Excellent video, I just got my H6 the other day, I’ve yet to plug it into my PC(I’m traveling), but your video was crystal clear. Thanks for this video!
Hello, really curious about the delay issues you have experienced when using the H6 as an audio interface. Is the buffer size setting sufficient for reasonably considering using the H6 as a standard audio interface (thinking of scarlett 2i2 or tascam 208i)? What features/capabilities would it be lacking compared to a dedicated audio interface? Thanks a lot for this great video
Well I finally got it anyway 3 weeks ago. Been using it since with no special latency issues. The thing I have to figure out now is how to properly manage the outputs (I might want to figure this out in the settings of my daw though)
@@pleiades250 Hello, honestly works great for me, used it as an audio interface with 2 channels (XY + guitar through a direct in) or as a portable recorder on batteries. Love the versatility !
Awesome video! I just got my h6, and I'm not hearing any output. I'm recording with logic pro x, and it detects the device but is not producing any output. Do I need an SD card even if I'm not recording onto it?
Hey. Great video. I have some question. When you try your Audio Technica microphone in ZOOM H6, we can hear a background noise. This is some ambience noise, or some noise from the zoom h6? I'm asking this because i want to buy exactly this combo (AT2020 + ZOOM H6) to record a podcast, so, can you explain me what is that noise, and what microphone are you using in all video? Was the sm57 by shure? Thx a lot.
it's mostly room tone. but there is pre-amp noise when you go above 7 with the Zoom H6. You may think your room is quiet, but when you turn up the gain the mic becomes very sensitive and you will pickup sounds that you didn't know were there. You can quickly clean your audio with RX7 Voice De-Noise or NS1 from Waves or something similar.
There is no way to connect it PC faster? Just for one click, like usual audio interface, without choosing in Zoom menu stereo mix\mtrack etc settings? Fast connect, and than if I need some special, to choose it in Zoom menu?
Thanks for the video. I use an USB power adapter to supply the power on this H6 for phantom powered multiple mics, since the mics would exhaust very quickly on the four batteries. In this case I lost the opportunity to use the device as an audio interface since they're all coming from one USB port on H6. Any solution for that? Are they exclusive to each other by this design or there may be a way to do this that I don't know? Thank you!
But regarding latency,,, if you lower the buffer and play the guitar, is the delay noticable? The scarlett and Steinberg's have asio drivers that get delay down to 10ms which is not noticable. Can the h5 get to a non noticable level. At a 40ms latency for example I can play 2 notes on guitar before I hear the first. I see you talked about noticable delay, but can you eliminate that in the h5 playing with the buffer.
Thx for your video. When I want to use interface usb mode, Multi track, but 96kHz, does not give me the option. Only when ai select Sd Card reader, Any thoughts?
Perhaps he doesn’t really understand what you’re asking. If you’re wondering about using this device with a sound card, you don’t really need to, as it is its own sound card, when plugged in through usb. Your motherboard’s soundcard should be good enough to process the internal audio (the stuff your daw or computer are generating), though a higher end sound card will obviously sound better. Still, plugging this into a PC, you’re plugging it into the usb, so you don’t have to worry about whether or not your computer sound card is going to add noise to your recordings.
I'm at the very moment when I'm just starting to gather information about a video podcast. I need two medium quality microphones for starters, 2 pairs of headphones I have from sennheiser and a camera to film full hd on sd card 45 minutes or maximum one hour. My question is if I could use the BM 800 Condenser microphone with Zoom h6 input to get quality sound and the h6 zoom output at the microphone input in a camcorder? Thank you
Hey, hello from the future, you solved a mystery for me which was "why can't I hear what my daw is playing" solution at 4:22, set the windows output audio to use the H6 thank you
I used the H6 as an interface for several years with headphones. But note that the only way to hook up studio monitors to the H6 is using a 1/8” to dual 1/4” TRS breakout cable from the line out of the H6. Which is not balanced. And picks up terrible noise and hum and is unuseable if using it as studio monitor out.
Hi , I have an analogue Mackie 1642 VLZpro , I also have the ZoomH6 , would it be best to purchase the EH6 adaptor to give me 6 XLR inputs for using with Ableton as an audio device ?ie keeping all the inputs the same? Much appreciated ✌️
Brilliant! Great review. As i wonder whther zoom h6 can be used more than good recorder, but also audio interface for bedroom studio, and can it record separated tracks e.g voice, guitar, ... direct to logis pro, cubase, ... or not. And i just randomly found your clip with very detail demonstration. Million thanks 👍👏
Yes it can do that, but keep in mind the 1/4 inputs on the Zoom are not instrument level, so if your guitar has passive pickups, you might need to use a DI box. Active pickups will work fine though.
Is it possible to record inputs in sd card on h6 while using it as a audio interface for pc/mac? Can you adjust the line-out you mentioned so that you can line-out tracks only what you want?
The sound quality is comparable to other audio interfaces in it's price range. I don't really use it as an audio interface, I prefer standard audio interfaces for that, but it's nice to have as a back-up audio interface in addition to using it as a standalone recorder.
Thanks for the Video! I ask myself how it´s working with Ableton and if there is a lot of latency from the device? I´m currently using and small Apogee Duet and the two channels are not enough for me. Not sure about if I should sell the Duet and buy the H6? Sometimes it´s good for recording a rehearsal but also I´m geting more interested in sound design and sampling nature sounds for a library and my music. What do you think?
I don't usually use the Zoom H6 as an audio interface. I will sometimes, but usually I'll use a more traditional interface like the Komplete Audio 6 or PreSonus 1824c or Focusrite 6i6, etc... It's great that it can be used as an interface, and it's also good for podcasting. What I really like about it is how mobile it is. There are no instrument pre-amps in the Zoom, so you'll need a DI box if you are using guitars or a bass with passive pickups.
So you can get a feed from the top mic and the xlr inputs simultaneously as a USB interface? I.E. using it as a mic and feed for my dj set up at the same time in obs for streaming? Seems like none of the predecessors can do that, including the h5. Is that correct?
Thank you for the information, I only have a question. When you explain about recording what is happening inside the zoomH6 is more like in an external device. How can I do if I can monitor my microphones but I can´t record it in ProTools 10, the waveform is flat and it doesn´t reflect what I´m Listening, is mandatory to have a second interface? I think is not normal. Again thank you for the help.
I currently have my laptop connected to a tascam model 12 and my pro tools is set up for the model 12 as the interface. I would like to use my h6 for recording my bands practice sessions away from my studio. Would I be able to switch between the model 12 and h6 on the same pro tools sessions?
I assume the guitar you were using had active pickups? They say it doesn't support passive pickups, I was wondering if I could damage anything by connecting a passive electric guitar? Or would it just sound bad...
Yes, it had active pickups. You won't damage anything using passive pickups, you just won't have proper input levels since the Zoom inputs are Line level and a passive guitar is instrument level.
Only if the electric guitar has active pickups. If it has passive pickups you'd want a DI box to do it properly since the inputs are not instrument level.
My DAW is Studio One, I already install the corresponding drivers and it works fine. the only problem is that when you use it, a noise sounds (BIZZT) sometimes I just open the software other times after minutes ... you know why this happens?
Can the XLR interfaces be set-up to take input at line-level? I ask because the rode wireless go receivers only output at line-level. Line level output @ 3.5mm > 3.5mm to XLR converter > line-level XLR to H6. Possible??
Random question. I just want to use this with Audacity to record acoutstic guitar using its x/y capsule as its mic. I do have it working and only using Stero Mix since I wont be using any of the other 4 inputs. I got it working by plugging it into my Window Laptop and then just using the menu and selecting Stereo Mix. But i got a question since I am a bit of a novice about this stuff, I did not download the ASIO drivers, and was just wondering if I need to download it to record stuff on Audacity (using just the mic channel). (edit) - So based one what I read online, ASIO makes recording sound better (i think). However, It looks like audacity does not support ASIO.
Hello! I have an important question to ask you! I would like to buy the zoom h5 and use it connecting it via micro USB directly on windows 10 and use it as a microphone on the OBS studio recording program. could you tell me if you can do it? I just want to know if windows 10 recognizes h5 zoom as a microphone! I can't find an answer to my question anywhere, I hope you answer me, thanks!
I've got an H5 and I'm facing degraded quality issue when use it as audio interface. I wonder if the quality of H6 in both standalone and interface mode are the same.
When I hit the SetUp section I don't see the I/O section just below the Hardware and Playback Engine setion, how can I manage to see that interface...?
Great video! Quick question... How do you record the audio while using Zoom as an audio interface? You explained a bit about the extra cable coming from the Line Output of your Zoom. Could you share a bit more about your setup for that?
I connected my iPad to H6 and using a 1/8" male to dual XLR male cable and recorded a song from a DAW app on iPad into H6 but the sound came out mono. The sound on my iPad from the DAW app when listened through headphones plugged into iPad is clearly a stereo as I have an stereo audio song track in it but when recorded to H6, it records mono. I tried both 320 KBPS in MP3 format, 24 bit/48 kHz WAV format and also 24 bit/96 kHz WAV formats with no luck. Also, listened to the recorded audio on the card on my Mac but it still sounds crappy and mono. Can you please help me how to record the sound in stereo exactly as how it sounds on the iPad?
Thanks for the perfect video! I just wonder why you had experienced a delay on 9:40? If I plug in an electric guitar and use H6 as an audio interface to connect to iMac and use internal sound card for output is it likely to experience a noticeable delay? What if a round trip to H6 from the iMac? Basically, I wonder, if I could use H6 for singing, playing and listening live at the same time with light DAW effects for a family fun concert night? (Recording is not the big deal for me.) Thanks ;)
If I remember, I believe I had direct monitor ON so that was the doubling effect. It shouldn't be a problem to do what you want with low latency. In theory anyway.
Thank you! A question, if you record, using a few mikes, to the SD card, in the SD card you get just a stereo mix, or you get all the tracks separated to use in a DAW?
You can use the Zoom H6 as a standalone recorder. If you were to use 4 microphones recorded to the SD card you would get 4 discreet channels. Meaning, the tracks are separate. An example would be you are using the Zoom H6 to record a podcast with 3 people total. You are using the XY mic and 3 mic's. The XY mic would capture the whole "scene", and would be a stereo track. Then, EACH microphone would capture the voice of the 3 podcasters INDIVIDUALLY, so you would have total control in POST of each persons microphone. This is a multi-track recorder. Does that answer your question?
I was searching everywhere trying to figure out why my shotgun mic was not being recognized. You are the only person who explains turning on the Phantom power. Everything works now!
Brilliant! I was thinking that I would need to buy an interface, mic, etc., separately. This solves it for me. It's also portable too!

I assume the guitar you were using had active pickups? They say it doesn't support passive pickups, I was wondering if I could damage anything by connecting a passive electric guitar? Or would it just sound bad...
Yes, it had active pickups. You won't damage anything using passive pickups, you just won't have proper input levels since the Zoom inputs are Line level and a passive guitar is instrument level.
which mic you use to record this tutorial thanks.
So could I record an electric guitar via line in and record some acoustic instrument via the microphone at the same time?
Only if the electric guitar has active pickups. If it has passive pickups you'd want a DI box to do it properly since the inputs are not instrument level.
My DAW is Studio One, I already install the corresponding drivers and it works fine. the only problem is that when you use it, a noise sounds (BIZZT) sometimes I just open the software other times after minutes ... you know why this happens?
Could be a power issue. Do you set it up to use computer power or use batteries? Maybe try switching between those.
thank you very much, I will try! I have the batteries inside but I use the option: PC / MAC using battery power
Can the XLR interfaces be set-up to take input at line-level?
I ask because the rode wireless go receivers only output at line-level.
Line level output @ 3.5mm > 3.5mm to XLR converter > line-level XLR to H6. Possible??
bro, I love you! Thank you so much!
Thanks, simple and helpful.
Can you record multitrack into the SD card on the go? So when you get home you will have all separate files to edit
Absolutely.
Yes, but it’s not set to it by default. Learned this the hard way.
Can I just multitrack record on it and then export the tracks in my daw? I would love to play and record a few battery powered synths outdoors
is internally recording available while using as an interface ?
Random question. I just want to use this with Audacity to record acoutstic guitar using its x/y capsule as its mic. I do have it working and only using Stero Mix since I wont be using any of the other 4 inputs. I got it working by plugging it into my Window Laptop and then just using the menu and selecting Stereo Mix. But i got a question since I am a bit of a novice about this stuff,
I did not download the ASIO drivers, and was just wondering if I need to download it to record stuff on Audacity (using just the mic channel).
Yeah that should work. You would have to set it as a mic source in Windows.
I've got an H5 and I'm facing degraded quality issue when use it as audio interface. I wonder if the quality of H6 in both standalone and interface mode are the same.
I have the same issue. Did you happen to find out?
Thanks. I need a new interface. Was going to get a focusrite but now I'm thinking a zoom
How do I fix the static the mic has when connected
Can you turn on sound effect while using zoom h6 as an audio interface?
So I’m trying to record Mac audio and 2 mic inputs how do I do this
Do you know if this work with M1 Macs as well?
When I hit the SetUp section I don't see the I/O section just below the Hardware and Playback Engine setion, how can I manage to see that interface...?
Great video! Quick question...
How do you record the audio while using Zoom as an audio interface? You explained a bit about the extra cable coming from the Line Output of your Zoom. Could you share a bit more about your setup for that?
You would record into a DAW. You can't record to the Zoom's SD card when you are using it as an audio interface.
Thank you! You helped me a lot!
(Recording is not the big deal for me.)
Thanks ;)
If I remember, I believe I had direct monitor ON so that was the doubling effect. It shouldn't be a problem to do what you want with low latency. In theory anyway.
Thank you!
Good video... many thanks!!!
