    You know you’ve made something really cool whenever everyone at the field gathers round to watch it fly. I only hope my al37 project garners similar attention.

    Man this is cool as hell! And also, props on the music selection because while I don't intend to do the same livery, this is indeed my muse. My own al37 is scheduled for delivery by FedEx tomorrow, 02-07-24. That will be the livery I'm going with since, as a truck driver, I pull a lot of their freight. To that end, I'm able to get up close and personal and take some pictures all around the aircraft so I can not only get the colors right but also some realistic weathering...

Lots of prep work first, sanding those pesky "star" bumps down and filling joint and seam lines with Beacon foam-tac's finishing compound and respray with white primer, another light sanding and several coats of vivid yellow paint!

    Did you prime first or did you spray the Montana directly on the foam? I know EPO foam is less likely to melt but don't want to destroy my brand new airliner. I'm planning on using a white spray primer for uniform covering as I accidentally bought the version with the tail graphics applied. Any suggestions on brands? What to avoid?

    • @TheDornado
      @TheDornado  4 роки тому

      Since the foam already has white paint on it, not much concern for melting. Yes this one was hit with primer before the Montana. The two I always use are Krylon Craft Foam Primer or Rustoleum 2x Primer. I have never had any foam issues with these and they both have very good sticking power to foam. This plane was done with the Krylon. Best of luck and can't wait to see your bird all painted!

    Did you find a loose cable with what appears to be either a heat shrink or electric tape on the tip coming out of the wires that came already connected to the blue box of your Airplane when you first took it out the box?...Mine has one like that and I don't know if that is normal or if they sent me a defective one...Can you please tell me! 🤞🏾

    Why were the winglets not installed for the flight?

    • @TheDornado
      @TheDornado  4 роки тому

      On the first flight of the day the right wing dropped on takeoff and broke the winglet from its plastic tabs, so had to re-glue it and fix the paint. This video actually has several flights cut together, some shots have the winglets on after it was repaired. But one thing to note is that it does tend to fly a bit better without the wingtips installed.

    The landing gear scale is off, appears to be taller than the real life version. Boeing should had taken notes from Freewing on this modification and made it happen so they could fit bigger engines under the wing :D Love the paint scheme though. Best one out there for this bird.

    • @TheDornado

      Yeah, had heard the plane flies a little better without the winglets so we wanted to try both ways on the same day to see. It does fly a little better without the winglets attached but looks way cooler with them I think.

    Did you notice any difference between flights with tips and without?

    • @TheDornado
      @TheDornado  5 років тому

      Yes, it definitely flies better with the tips removed, but it is not a big difference. The turns are a little crisper without the tips but it flies great both without and with.

  • @heregoesmike
    @heregoesmike 4 роки тому

    @TheDornado What happened to the winglets? Some of the shots there are both, some there is one, and some there are none? Do they have a tendency to fall off?

    • @TheDornado
      @TheDornado  4 роки тому

      No, they stay on very well...except when you let a wing dip on takeoff and one scrapes the ground:P And yes that is what happened. Had to re-glue the foam to the plastic holder, so we did a couple flights to see how it flies without the tips.

    Is it possible to remove the lower part of the winglet to have a 737-700 series style?

    • @TheDornado
      @TheDornado  5 років тому

      They are just foam so I'm sure you could cut the bottom part off and sand it smooth. The shape wouldn't be quite perfect since these are shaped a bit different than the 700, but not sure if anyone would notice.

  • @richardowen2913
    @richardowen2913 4 роки тому

    Did you use masking tape to separate sections? How did you keep it from peeling the paint off the foam? Use a specific tape? Or clear coat or something??

    • @TheDornado
      @TheDornado  4 роки тому

      Yeah, we used the low tack yellow frogtape to mask off the sections. Occasionally it will pull up a little paint and then just touch it up but on this plane there were only a few small spots that came up with tape. You can also use post-it notes which are less tacky but be careful for bleed with those. Didn't do clear coat until all the painting was done.

    Jason , how sturdy is the form ? I want buy it I am a little concerned about it breaking etc.

    • @TheDornado
      @TheDornado  2 роки тому

      I know lots of people who have this plane and no one has had any issues with strength etc.. It is very well built and has carbon rod re-enforcement's where needed for extra strength. The only weak point I have found is the wingtips. If you scrape one on the ground they have a tendency to get knocked off, but very minor. Fantastic airplane!

    Would the AL37 NOT be a good first purchase for a beginner?

    • @TheDornado
      @TheDornado  4 роки тому

      No EDF would make a good first purchase. They are harder to fly and less forgiving than a prop powered plane. When I teach students I always start them with a high wing trainer, followed by a mid or low wing sportier plane and then you can go to an EDF as a third plane. Now as far as EDFs go, the AL37 is easy to fly and I would say it could be your second EDF, but not ideal as a first. The AL37 is a wonderful plane, but you need some experience before flying it.
