Here’s a video of how I prep and clear coat headlights. Hopefully it’s thorough enough to understand but if not please ask any questions you have. Enjoy:)
Someone on UA-cam said using clear coat will distort the light beam angle and projection trajectory. I don’t know if that is true or not. They said using a clear wrap is a better choice.
@@hashishsenju2015 No its not true, you could put a clear wrap over but the factory coatng will still degrade if left in place, sanding then applying a wrap will still leave you with sanding marks whereas clear coat fills the tiny scratches in to give the lens its clear apperance.
@@hashishsenju2015 they were talking out their butt. if clear coat supposedly effects the beam pattern how do they not expect an even thicker less clear and uniform layer of wrap to effect it as well? headlights are clear coated from factory. The only problem you can find with some clear coats is when it expands at different speeds from the plastic headlight lens and causes spider cracks in the clear coat.
He wrapped that car really well, I found out the hard way I wrapped my wheel wells and stuff when I sprayed my rims with 2k clear coat and man does that stuff settle everywhere! It’s like a whole cloud !
Great job Thanks I have a question after first coat you wait 30 min for 2nd coat. Do you have to clean spray gun and mix an other clear coat mix ? or the clear coat mix will not set in spray cup.
I think you did a fine job and you made a good tutorial. I'll be doing this to my truck soon. I just bought a 27 gallon compressor and the spectrum spray gun so I'm on my way..
Thanks much ! I wish I have that pro sprayer. I see that you do 3 passes for the coat, if I do from can, do you think I can do like 6 paths? I know if I put too much it will crack. With the can do you think 2 coats is good or more ? Thanks
I do this exact same process, only thing I do is after the clear coat dries, three days or so later, I go back over it with 1500 grit sandpaper to get dust and orange peel out, then use a good cutting compound and polish.
Headlight heart sergeon its really nice job you did!! Its becomming brand new; i have a question how much is the mixing ratio for 1 car headlight.i will be waiting your feedback eagrly

I sanded and clear coated it. It looks way better than before but has like a foggy gloss look especially when the lights on it's kind of still foggy. What can I do to fix it?
I was wondering how sanded you should go for good adhesion so I guess 2000 is good and I figured 2k clear coat should be just as good if someone is just doing one set once
Hi. Could you explain what you meant by 2 to 1 and why you had to different containers when you were showing the clear cost you were using. Also, if I get a paint gun, is it possible to use in for a mobile set up?
I was recommended to clearcoat a set of new headlights before I install them. So is it necessary to still sand the surface down and then spray clearcoat or can it just be sprayed directly on it. I was recommended this because the headlight lenses are known to fade easily.
This is fantastic and gives me a lot of confidence going into my headlight restoration project. Just a couple questions, I'm going to have my headlights split apart for other reasons, restoring reflector chrome + projector retrofit, is clearcoating the lenses better to do on the car? If I could do it off the car, how should I set up the lenses so that I can be sure to get them coated nicely? I was thinking of masking the inside of the lenses and taking care not to touch inside. I'm also planning to use a "Spraymax" 2k clear in a spray can, I don't have access to a compressor unfortunately. As long as the prep is proper, could I still expect a decent result out of a can as from a gun? Thanks!
Hey! I would do it off the car but probably after you do everything you need to do on the inside. I would even do it after installing the lens back to the housing. I’m sure you will get great results with the can as long as you take your time with prep. Also I’d recommend putting the headlights facing up so that the clear coat can flow out better. Hopefully everything I said makes sense lol. Let me know how it turns out:)
Looks really nice! I'm interested in how well it has held up over the years. 2000 grit is pretty fine for a paintable surface...not much for the clear coat to bite onto.
Thanks! I'm not sure because I haven't seen the customer since. But I've done the same on my cars and its lasted for years. I don't go too long with the 2000. It ends up being around 1500 when I'm done. I just didn't have any 1500 at the moment.
@@pavmik1 I'm wondering if it's necessary to go that high of a grit. To paint a car only requires 600 grit. Is there a reason to go that high on a headlight? Have you done any that you stopped at 600?

The cracking comes from the brand of clear coat you use. I used to have that issue all the time and I thought it was the way I payed it down or wrong prep. But once I switched clear coat it doesn’t crack.
Hey, thanks for your video mate! I sanded my headlights today and took my time by doing so. I sanded it from p400 to 600 to 1000 I was really thorough while sanding. My plan was to sand it to 1000 and hand it over to a bodyshop so they can coat it with 2k clear for me. I noticed that I got some really deep scratches that won't come out anymore no matter how much I sand with p400 or 600 They seem to be much deeper. Im afraid that you'll be able to see the deeper scratches after clearcoat. You think I could try a p320 or p280 to get those deeper scratches out ? Or do I risk of causing even deeper scratches?
Hey there, I see you finish sanding with 2000. Would there be any benefit going up to 3000, or would the clearcoat just fill the 2000 lines just fine and make it 100% transparent?
Hey, no there would be no benefit. Because the clear coat needs to bite into the scratches. It will even look transparent with 1000 scratches but I do a little bit with 2000 just because it makes it look perfect. If you do with 2000 you will not see any scratches unless you didn’t sand out the 320 or 600 grit well.
My curiosity (and for preface I haven't used a clear coat like this before) but with all the clear coats I have tried what I notice is that my headlights get hazy for some reason. Is there something I am getting wrong ? Would that be the clear coat I use or could it be in the system I use.
Hey, well I’d try this way. But I had to learn the hard way myself. I’ve had clear coat crack up on the lens. And sometimes it would get hazy but that was because it was very humid. Try doing it on a warm dry day. And make sure you sand off all the old clear before you start moving up in grit. What grit would you normally finish sanding with? It would have to be at least 1000 wet sand for good results. But no more than 1500 so it has something to grab on to. Let me know if something I said doesn’t make sense and I’ll try explaining better.
@@pavmik1 that makes sense. Last time I tried to use the 3m kit which goes 500, 800 to I think they go up to a 3000 but I finished off with the rainex clear coat which is a rubbing more than a spray applicant. I find it looks fine for the first 5 minutes but as it dries it gets hazy
@@benblackburn2693 yea lol those 3m kits are a joke. The biggest thing to get the best result is prep work. If you think you sanded all the 320 grit scratches off with 600. Get a brand new 600 grit sandpaper and sand it really good for another 5 minutes. Do the same for all the other grits as well. Because the deeper scratches are the hardest to get rid of but they will show up the best once you lay the clear down. I use a 2:1 ratio high solids euro clear coat. I find that the best option as far as what works on headlight lenses. The only issue with that is. Nobody wants to spend $100 + on a gallon of clear coat that will just sit there after you are done with the lights unless you have something else to use it on.
hi i did 2k high gloss clear coat in a can, after sanding 3000grit but the coat cracked/spider webs. i did it when its cold 10celsius weather winter, is it the reason for the cracks? i only applied one coat thin as shown in videos.

Awesome job, I did notice that you use only a paper mask. I would highly recommend using the proper mask. One Made for spraying paint. I know spray painters that died from not wearing the correct mask.
I did this to my car's headlights in 2011... They are still clear to this day. Mind you, it's a Honda S2000, and I like to keep it clean. 😎 I did this to my friend's Corolla on the same year, and in 2020 we noticed small peeling on the edges. He doesn't keep his car as clean though, so maybe that's a factor. Otherwise, it basically last as long as clearcoat last on a car when done right and taken care of.
Thats total Nonsense, More people these day using restoration kits than anything else, You just need todo some research to find the best one like i did!!!😂
I think it all depends on prep, material, and making sure you degrease it well. I’ve done lights years ago that still look new today. I’ve used adhesion promoter once and it made it hazy.
@@pavmik1 yeah I was concerned about haziness also. I prepped with water based cleaners no solvent. I cleaned really thoroughly with gray scuff too. Results were great but two years and it's cracking off. I'm looking to do this again in the spring
@@Noxish hmm that’s interesting. Maybe try a different clear? I use 2:1 high solids auto clear. It’s very thick and has a nice shine to it. haven’t had any peeling issues yet. It it peeling from the center or edges?
Neal Singh Hey, to avoid orange peel I’d turn up the pressure to about 27-29 psi so that the clear coat flows out more when it lands on the lens. With more pressure I would also move more faster to avoid runs. Hopefully that makes sense.
Aldo Torres for this one I used the iwata LPH400 with the purple cap. But right now I use the GTi pro lite with the T110 air cap. Both guns are really good. But honestly you can use any gun. Just turn the pressure up higher to about 28-29 psi and move quickly.

Sorry for my English
Hey you can clear coat from the inside. I do that sometimes but make sure you give it a light sand with 1500 wet sand on the whole inside before you spray clear.
It’s the clear coat. Not all clears react well with the type of plastic the lens is made out of. If you glean get a hood of 2:1 high solids euro clear those never gave me any issues. But they have to be sprayed out of a gun
I did this to my Honda S2000's headlights in 2011. To this day they are still nice and clear. This car, I keep it clean, but I did this to my friend's car in the same year, and his began to barely start peeling along the edge about 2 years ago. Keep in mind, he drives a Toyota Corolla and I know he doesn't keep it as clean as my car. I would definitely say that the cleaner you keep them, the longer it will last. Even then, if it does start peeling, just do it again and get another 8 years or so.

Can i use a 2k can clearcoat ? i dont have any spraypaint tools, but im paint good
Hi, I’m sure you can! Shouldn’t be a problem
@@pavmik1 do you recomend 1 layer or 2 coats ?
Instead of using the dish soap and water can I use some rubbing alcohol?
I’m sure that’s fine
Any glass cleaner spray will do as they all contain a little alcohol!!
Hi sir, can i use clear coat for car paint? Or it has to be plastic crear coat?
Hey I use regular clear coat for vehicles
Most paint is for anything metal wood plastic. Or buy one that’s only for plastic
What's your spray gun? Can you recommend one?
that was an iwata. But i changed to a devilbliss GTI Pro lite. Best gun ever
@@pavmik1 what's your compressor?
The restorer kits are waste of money. They yellow again.
Awesome job man!
Thanks!
Thats total Nonsense, More people these day using restoration kits than anything else, You just need todo some research to find the best one like i did!!!😂
I did this and two years later the lamination failed. What do you think about an adhesion promoter? Is there a good colorless adhesion promoter?
@@pavmik1 ok I'll try that one. Hopefully you don't hear from me in two years lolol
@@Noxish 😂😂 I wanna hear how it goes
can we use clear coat spray paint? Is clear coating is durable?
I’m sure it will be just fine. Just make sure you sand it good.
@@pavmik1 okay Thanks 😊
Do you have any tips to avoid orange peel and what to do manage orange peel?
Neal Singh Hey, to avoid orange peel I’d turn up the pressure to about 27-29 psi so that the clear coat flows out more when it lands on the lens. With more pressure I would also move more faster to avoid runs. Hopefully that makes sense.
If you get really bad orange peel you will have to start from scatch and sand it all off
@@craigtriacca3967 not necessarily. You can sand it down and buff it
my clear crazied it was a rattle can any thoughts
Does it look like spider web cracks?
great results. But sanding with 2500 will give no adhesion to clear.adhesion promoter shoud be used
Montenegro ZETA I do it with 2000 for just a little. But I do without adhesion promoter. I’ve had it last several years this way.
@@pavmik1 yeah in my opinion we should stop at 600 its enough and even give adhesion to the clear coat
Aveiro Zinou you can still see 600 scratches underneath the clear coat. 1000 is much better.
What gun you use
Aldo Torres for this one I used the iwata LPH400 with the purple cap. But right now I use the GTi pro lite with the T110 air cap. Both guns are really good. But honestly you can use any gun. Just turn the pressure up higher to about 28-29 psi and move quickly.
Bro I was cleaning it
And then i remove the headlights to do the black housing
My little brother accidently sanded the interior off the plastic cover headlights idk how to call thatt
I've already sanded the exterior but my lil brother tryna help he didn't know which side so he accidently sanded the interior
It's staying blurry😭😭
Even im polishing it
Is clear coat will help? Sorry for my English
Hey you can clear coat from the inside. I do that sometimes but make sure you give it a light sand with 1500 wet sand on the whole inside before you spray clear.
@@pavmik1 THANK YOU SO MUCH BRO
MEAN A LOT❤️
Surely it would be better easier quicker jst to remove the headlights
Yip that is my plan as well. 3 screws for most cars and its out
yes I then sanded them out tried again and came back
It’s the clear coat. Not all clears react well with the type of plastic the lens is made out of. If you glean get a hood of 2:1 high solids euro clear those never gave me any issues. But they have to be sprayed out of a gun
@@pavmik1 thanks I wont make that investment
How long does it take them to fade again?
If done properly at least 3-5 years
@@pavmik1 thank you.
@@sukruaraci7290 absolutely
How long it last
Several years at least
I did this to my Honda S2000's headlights in 2011. To this day they are still nice and clear.
This car, I keep it clean, but I did this to my friend's car in the same year, and his began to barely start peeling along the edge about 2 years ago.
Keep in mind, he drives a Toyota Corolla and I know he doesn't keep it as clean as my car.
I would definitely say that the cleaner you keep them, the longer it will last. Even then, if it does start peeling, just do it again and get another 8 years or so.
your supposed to leave it at 600 grit so the clearcoat has something to grab onto, it wont last as long the way you did it
Can I use a 1k Clearcoat?
I’m sure you can but I’d use 2k. It gives better results.
2k clearcoat as no uv protection and is a nightmare to remove trust me!!
all you need is the 600. 2000 is to fine to topcoat. read the tds
600 is too coarse. It leaves scratches underneath the clear coat. It lasts longer than 5 years the way I do it.
Wanna use alcohol instead of water and dish soap. , dish soap can act funny with the clear sometimes depending on residue.
Step by step is tell us how you made the clear mix. You need clear hardener and reducer
Wait you don't polish it before clearcoat? I polished mine D:
No. That beats the whole purpose of sanding. You need the scratches for the clear coat to hold on to. I’m curious how long yours will last
Hai iam from india. Which brand are use in light
Md Sadiq hey, the light is the original one that came on the vehicle.
Thinner is not necessary
Lol wtf is this 😆. I might be wrong but I spent 10 minutes on mine and it still clear after 1 years
Why didn’t you remove headlights? It will be easy like that :)
I normally would but I was on a time crunch lol
I did it 5 years ago with 4 layers and I failed. Two layers is the best solution. I agree. It will last for two years the most.
you meant to spray it after 600 grit
I found Eminem's ghost singer
damn, sorry. was wrapping the whole in foil suppose to be a joke or what?
Nice job! What brand of Clear Coat you use?
Thanks! That one is called Carolina pro finish. It’s a 2:1 clear
