Apple also included the Metal Framework with C++ rather than just Objective C, meaning it will be even easier for developers to port their games as many games are developed in C++
Today was quite interesting, and probably the most acknowledgments gamers ever got from Apple. That "Game Mode" for iPhone is a pretty major change and one that hopefully will FINALLY make iPhones stop dimming when playing games over long periods.
How…? iPhones dim because they get too hot, and sure, it does get indeed hotter the more background think it does but it doesn’t overheat when chatting. It’s the game that’s too heavy
Screen dimming is a method of thermal throttling. There are many methods to keep temperatures down, mainly slower processing, but Apple also does screen dimming very early for some reason. For mobile devices, the main reason for throttling is for conforming to international standards. You do not want to burn your hands. Surface temperatures of the device must be under a certain temperature (usually 50C). Since game mode maximizes performance on Macs, I do not see how it would fix the issue on iPhones since there is more performance.
@@battery_wattage The reality is Apple gave us extremely minimalistic details at what it does but they said something very specific. It improves performance. We all know that iPhones performance are blazing right out the gate, the problem is sustainable performance. The heat ramps up, the throttling occurs, performance drops, the screen gets dimmed for all the reasons we both understand needs to happen. But that is also based off of the fact that the phone tries to offer peak gaming experience while maintaining all the background operations it does. With a game mode, Apple could indeed have carefully tuned the device (something I got to give credit to Apple, they can tune the -beep- out of their hardware) so to your point, would game mode stop the phone from doing what it is supposed to do in the worst of conditions? Absolutely not, thinking any different would be foolish. Will the phone magically have active cooling because of a software update? Obviously not. However, would it potentially greatly mitigate the issue for when someone wants to invest themselves in a prolonged gaming session on their phones? Very likely. And that is a victory for iOS gamers, no matter how we spin the narrative. How good that tweak will be? That'll remain to be seen but I'm hopeful as this is very much the first time Apple legitimately acknowledge their hardware being used in exclusivity for gaming, something we've never historically seen.
I really hope devs take advantage of this, but I dont want releases to be only on the App Store like RE4 and 8 were. They NEED to be on steam if they want to find an audience, especially because if more mac ports come out people will want to carry over the steam libraries they've already built up with games that they've already purchased. I dream of the day of being able to play on my macbook pro on the go and on my desktop PC at home interchangeably
The best solution is to offer the games BOTH on Steam AND the App Store, so you get the choice between buying for PC/Mac (and maybe eventually iOS and iPadOS, once sideloading is required by law in the US and the rest of the world) or buying for all of your Apple devices (and for the rest of your family if you have Family Sharing and Shared Purchases enabled). If I only intended on buying games for myself, I would pick Steam, since I would be primarily play on PC and Mac. However, there's quite a bit of friction to share your games with your family, never mind them only being able to play it on PC, so for that reason I would also advise buying it on the App Store, so that you can easily allow other family members to play the game you bought with relative ease, since 9 times out of 10 they have an Apple ID over a Steam account.
