I think it would be funny, and maybe even a little bit scarier, if the horror version of Draculaura still had an aversion to blood. She *has* to drink it in order to survive, but she's fighting the urge to throw up every time, and is probably pretty emaciated from going as long as possible without feeding. Though maybe that's being a little too cruel to the poor girl

Honestly, that's how Lavendertowne's design read to me. A horrific breakdown where Draculaura gives into the bloodlust, but internally is suffering.

Or maybe kinda like in many vampire horror stories she's going as long as possible without blood until she goes on a feral hunting spree which would go very well with body horror since what's more terrifying than losing control of your own body even for just a day
i honestly would love to see a more mature take on monster high that doesn't default to "edgy teen netflix series" solely because watching monster girls be actual monsters would be so cool imo

Oooh well there WAS Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School! (Which I honestly think inspired Monster High.) If they rebooted that for a mature audience it wouldn't be the same but they could easily get that vibe. Like @violetcauliflower said though it could be awkward haha. I'd still love to see it!
@@onlinegirliee Barbie is also for kids but the movie still leaned in for mature themes and was targeted towards a more teenage and adult audience so I don't think Monster High being for kids would necessarily stop them for making a more teen/adult adaptation
The doll with the stone texture-skin *was* a Monster High doll! Her name was Rochelle Goyle
She also had a love interest who was also a gargoyle named Garrett, and I think he had the stone texture-skin, too

I mean in the reboot the designs are certainly scary looking
I feel like Monster High is like one of the only kids properties that would genuinely work well as a horror series since it’s entire concept is already horror oriented
But if I’m being honest it’d be kind of funny if the Monster High characters, even in this gorey and spooky retelling still act like their canon selves. Like oh yeah they kill people without a second thought but they still act exactly like their original counterparts
Lol it would definitely give off Helluva Boss vibes- mass murderers just doing everyday things like paying taxes
One aspect that I thought could be incorporated into Cleo is having her look a little more rotten/run down. Female mummies aren't as well preserved as male ones because Egyptians would wait for the body to start decomposing, this way the people mummyfying them wouldn't mess with the body. Cleo having to struggle with her body not being preserved well would certainly fit the horror aspect, albeit in a more psychological way.
I would have of made Cleo bleeding from her nose because you know they used the hook in that area but other than that I love all the redesigns :D

Monster high could have been so interesting with less doll like designs. If it was an indie show for teens/adults it would be so interesting to see what it could have been.
Maybe someday in the future they’ll go that direction? They did a gritty reboot of some girls media like Sabrina and Winx Club, I’d love to see a teens oriented Monster High 💕

Idk if you've seen the newer Monster High cartoon, but they had a lot of fun takes on the monstery aspects of the characters. Cleo in particular has all of her organs in jars in a purse, and if she gets too far from them she feels a physical effect. Like if she gets too far from the jar with her inner ear, she can't balance or walk straight. I just thought that was really cute practical character building and you might enjoy it when thinking about Cleo.

Monster high has a reboot now and one of the new cleo dolls actually comes with a jar with her heart inside. It is a really cute detail.
That is one of my favorite changes made to cleo in this generation of monster high. She has other organs too, but she has to keep her heart close because if not, she will become cold and uncaring, like how organs from real mummies were kept with them bc they were needed for the afterlife!

Not just the tutorials, the redesign and other vids too! They are all so educational, even unintentionally, and entertaining! I think if monster high got a teen/adult reboot, it should be a horror comedy, because lately these edgy teen reboot of our childhood shows have taken the fun out of it with all its serious themes. I feel monster high would be the cutesy creepy teen show with some dark humor and puns
i agree with you, now monster high is like barbie, but monster version of barbie and they're just cute, not scary cute looking. They completely lost their uniqueness and scary cuteness to them, and also the mythology, monster movies aspect of them, that they were inspired by,. Like now lagoona pink (blue) could be mistaken as a barbie doll, but barbie decided to turn their dolls into monsters

A small fact to do with werewolves. In France literature werewolves were often used as a name for child predators. Hence were the plot for little red riding hood came from
I have also heard of one original, where the wolf in the story was supposed to represent Germany, while the girl portrayed young France and the grandma old France
That makes sense. It’s often a trusted adult that you wouldn’t expect, thus the secret identity.

The terrifying versions of monster high characters look cuter than the actual characters themselves in my opinion
There is something to be said about the inherently creepy, plastic, not-quite-human look of the dolls. They're obviously replicas of humans with some things changed to make them more cute, but at the same time, it makes them more alien.
They look more real, more people. They look like they've been through life, whereas the original characters look like they were just dolls.
It's what made me click on the video. I love monsters and things with an edge to them, but also like it when they have color and some approachability. And likewise: when soft things have said edge.
It's kinda like Tolkien Orcs vs "babes and hunks with tusks, pointy ears and green/grey skin".
That's what made series like Zeno Clash and Oddworld very appealing for me. A large part of their designs is being genuinely bizarre, off-putting, having some edge or grimness or off-putting part.
Seeing that contrasted with more approachable traits (like Abe's voice and biggol eyes, or Pseudo's moments of sharing and receiving wisdom and jokes with the kid under his temporary care) highlights both aspects.
Or perhaps, in another way: We are wary of extremes and find imperfections more natural.
The duality of scary and adorable makes characters interesting.

YES! I Litterally love monster high and her adaptations. I was surprised by frankie being missing too. I thought Frankie was the main character and Draculara was a main side character, but such a fan favorite that she became more recognized.
Frankie was definitely the show protagonist, but Draculaura was the star of several of the movies, so I think it just depends on what media you saw more of. Both were definitely very important tho
If I’m remembering correctly but female mummies are more decomposed than their male counterparts because families would wait for them to begin decaying then start the process to avoid necrophilia among tomb workers

ETA: a better example might’ve been grave robbing/tomb robbing it’s averaged that usually a tomb gets robbed 100yrs after being sealed but either way culture or not people have always prioritised their own interests in whatever extent

I had a monster high doll as a kid that would weirdly trigger a very specific, very horrifying nightmare that i would have multiple times a week. It was weird because I loved the doll, and was never scared by it at all, but whenever I woke up, I somehow knew that the dream happened because of the doll. I got rid of it, and the dreams stopped. My chronic nightmares kept happening, but i didn't have that one again.

@@Dressup_DollIronically, part of the monster high lore is that Twyla sneaks into kids’ rooms at night and eats their nightmares. She does it to help them sleep.
I would love to see you redesign the Tinkerbell cast! I think doing things like incorporating their jobs into their outfits more, as well as giving them a bit more variety, since they definitely suffer from the “we all look the same so they can just make one doll base” syndrome.

12:04 if I remember correctly (I could be wildly wrong) these mummies with more realistic paintings over their wrappings were of romans/ roman decent. Since Egypt and Rome had a strong relationship, their people would usually share and mix religion and beliefs. Romans tended to make more realistic paintings, rather than the stylized art in Egypt
I think another thing that could make cleo more interesting is how important death was to the ancient egyptians, and that she is undead. I really loved the video , I too was a kid who loved horror and watched horror stuff that I probably shouldn't have. It always annoyed me how little horror for kids there was.

really random but i really loved cleo because 1 as a kid i was OBSESSED with ancient egypt stuff, and 2 since I live in Turin and there we have the second biggest ancient egypt museum in the whole world and i would ask my parents to take me there all the time. I think I've been there atleast 10 times throughout my entire life, and I'm 17

Monster High was one of my favorite things growing up, and now being into cute and creepy things i still think its such a great balance of the two (for a younger demographic.) Their character designs will always be some of my favorites. These re designs are so fun!! (Also fully obsessed with Clawdeen's redesign!! 😍😍)
In monster high they actually have her with jars of her organs and such! In the reboot I remember an entire episode about her with her heart in a jar and all her scarab pals
I would love it if you made fully unrestricted horror art on patreon or something, I feel like youtube can be very limiting when it comes to violence or macabre subjects and I'd love to see what you could make without worrying about censorship
11:14 in g3 one of Cleo’s dolls (the core refresh one) comes with a jar with her heart inside, of course it’s not an anatomically correct heart, but it is still very cool. I don’t watch G3’s show, but if I’m not mistaken she can’t be too far apart of her heart or she will pass out. Also in her music video the lyrics say that the further away she is from her heart, the more she acts cold and distant (heartless)
This is a really cool concept! I feel like they kind of don’t completely read as the characters though, since a lot of their unique outfit details aren’t there. Clawdeen especially doesn’t really feel like Clawdeen since she doesn’t have her original color palette. But I still think the designs are cool!
Really? I actually thought they did a great job of truly taking the essence of the characters and horror-ing it up, particularly draculara and clawdeen's. I thought twyla did miss the mark and I read cleo in cleo's, but it didn't take the kind of twist I would have expected for her. I feel like draculara caries of that small frame silhouette and petite feel, but has just gone blank into full human eater mode. Clawdeen reminds me of when they had that clawditions episode and she goes feral bc the spotlight looked like a full moon and triggered her wolfier side. Cleo has very similar outsides, but I don't connect the blank and hollowed look in her eyes with cleos character as she is usually more queen bee energy. Twyla does look like she maybe didn't have a grasp on the twyla character, but her interpretation of what the boogeyman daughter should be like was cool.

I saw a picture of a disembodied mummified foot without any wrappings. It was horrifying, and even though all the designs were beautiful, the Cleo one brought back that image. I’m facing the consequences of not looking away vefwkjhnefv

Twyla was the creepiest for me because of the nightmares and sleep paralysis i constantly have, just the thought of something watching you when your least expecting it is so enticing and creepy to me, the others where fascinating to watch you design, but Twyla was the only one i found truly creepy

Ok, i watched the whole video, and i LOVE the boogie girl!! She's amazing, and i love very much. Like, the kitchen tile teeth? The neck?? The fingers??? The ribcage???? Yes please!! It'a my headcannon that she always has a dark shadow over her, no matter how bright it is out.
Wait I love the idea of the shadow always being over her. Lol that makes so much sense with her litterally controlling the shadows.

im willing to bet that lav knew that and just didnt mention it, considering her eyes are still colder than the rest of a pallet for the redesign. purple wouldnt fit as well as the pink does.
the wolf fact is interesting but for me it doesnt provide as much of an explanation for the anthropomorphization of them in horror
@@scourgatoryI always thought the concept of werewolves came from that one condition where someone had excessive body hair to the point that they basically looked like a walking bigfoot or something idk
@@N4Rl_ i honestly have no idea where it comes from but i wouldnt be surprised if some early werewolf media came from that. i think the theory of some of the horror coming from the betrayal aspect is also interesting, like if the dogs we domesticated from wolves just turned against us one day
I always forget her eyes are purple, and then I remember they are a TRADE MARKED purple and that is so crazy to me. Anyway, I actually thought the changes lav made to the eyes on Dracula were nice bc they almost look like her irises have of bleeding cuts in her eyes.

I loved this video. I grew up with monster high loving their high fashion vibe but I also really enjoy how you transformed them and made the dolls work in a more creepy setting. I'd love to see you do Lagoona as some creepy undiscovered sea creature. Also I believe the doll you were thinking about to be Rochelle Goyle who is meant to be a gargoyle girl.
I love these designs! But I also feel like maybe boogie-girl would have been a bit better if her makeup was added. I could imagine her wanting to spruce up her looks and try and put on makeup, but it’s just really bad and ends up making her look more creepy.

The doll you’re thinking of with the stone skin is probably Rochelle Goyle. Additionally the Reel Drama collection is entirely black and white with just a splash of the girl’s signature color as an ode to the early movies they were based off.
I wish you had made Clawdeen’s outfit purple instead of blue, but not much to do now. Still love all the designs.
Now that you finished making Unfamiliar (for now!) I’d love to see more behind the scenes stuff from it such as character sheets, timelines, scripts, ect. I think it’d be really cool to sort of get an insight into your creative process and it could inspire other artists to make their own stories! Love your videos

Between ages 12 and 14, I was OBSESSED with Monster High. Binged the webisodes, the movies, loved the theme songs.
Honestly as a huge werewolf fan, one of my fav female werewolf characters is ginger from the horror movie ginger snaps. It's more on the body horror side of werewolves but also because of ginger herself was more of an outspoken character and the overall antagonist. So I love seeing more erratic female werewolf characters in media.

love these designs!! and you totally nailed it with twyla, her whole thing in the movies and tv shows when she shows up is how she sticks to shadows and can sort of disappear into them, so having that harsh shading really made the whole thing pop!

Honestly, I feel like you made them look edgy, not spooky at all, and absolutely stripped them of any of their personality just to make them "spooky" concepts related to death.

These redesigns are so cool! Also I’m really glad you’re free from chronic nightmares, that sounds awful! I definitely have seen the shadow figures that you talked about after nightmares. I used to get nightmares about bear(s) breaking into my house or chasing me (I don’t know what it means, and it’s kind of weird because I actually really like bears) and then I would wake up and the shadows would make it look like there was a bear in my room or right in front of me.
Anyways I’m rambling, hope you’re taking care ^^
