Some long and progressive, others short and to the point. They're always recognizable as "Rush", but their music has so many different vibes and feels. As for this song..... "Tom Sawyer" is a literal classic rock song. It's virtually perfect. Been jamming to this for 35 years. It still gives me cold chills. I LOVE to see someone experience what we've had as our foundation for so long. There's so much more!!
So glad you loved Rush, guys! The great thing about Rush is it is made up of 3 of the best musicians in the world, all in one band! The drummer, Neil Peart (Pee-rt), is the lyricist. The man was a MAJOR genius. He is a brain who is one of the hardest working musicians in the history of the genre. That said, the world lost Neil in January of this year, when he died. We were all shattered by the news. What a man. They were in the business for over 40 years and they are SO GREAT! Listen to "Spirit of Radio", "Limelight", "YYZ" (live from Rio) and "2112". EPIC AWESOMENESS!
This freaking band is incredible and no other one will ever compare. R.I.P Neil. The music world lost a legend. Geddy Lee is one of the best bass players ever. Alex Lifeson is in a class all his own. This band was together 40 years. Unheard of in the music business. Had the upmost respect for each other and loved their fans. Incredible live! Masters of their instruments.
YYZ with the video so you can see the magic happen. I'm from Toronto (YYZ) and that song was the theme song for our local TV station for years, CityTV. Great band, great songs!
Fun watching people “discover” Rush for their first time. Do make a point of checking out the “YYZ” video from Rio-it is a real experience. Enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole-you’ve only scratched the surface! BTW “YYZ” is the airport code for Toronto, Canada where they must have flew into and out from a zillion times!
@@ewolffman It has the distinction of having been sung along with, even though it's instrumental. You owe yourself this 5 minutes of pure musical nirvana!
Listening to people comparing Rush to Tool in this direction is like listening to people saying, "Man, if these Beatles we're about to listen to are anything like Badfinger, we may be in for a treat!" Hilarious.
There will never be another band like RUSH. Exceptionally talented, unique in their respecive disciplines and perfectly synchronized like no other band.
Rush was my first concert I have ever gone and I went because I won the tickets on the radio. Tom Sawyer is one if those songs that when I was with dad in the car or doing shores, dad will always cranked the volume all the way up and beyond. Is amazing seeing you guys being inspired and appreciate this legendary band artistry. Hope you inspire your audience to more legendary bands like Rush.
"Tom Sawyer" is one of the few songs that RUSH collaborated with an outside writer; in this case Pye Dubois, bassist for another Canadian band, Max Webster. Neal Peart (pronounced PEER-T) usually wrote all the lyrics for the band after he joined the band for their second album, Fly By Night. Geddy Lee (Bass / Keyboards) and Alex Lifeson (Guitar / Pedals) generally wrote the music to go with Peart's lyrics. RUSH is what happens when you put a top 3 drummer with a top 5 bassist and a top 10 guitarist. If you guys are rappers, you'll probably enjoy "Roll the Bones" the title track for the album of the same name, where Peart experimented with his own "rap" lyrics for a section after being impressed by some of the lyricism he heard in rappers of the late 80s/early 90s.
@@SJamesGill88 And both Alex and Geddy are Top 3. Alex, in particular, is regarded as one of the greats when he should be considered one of the legends. His unique use of chord voicings, single-note rhythm lines and just his overall ability to always be right where he is needed, along with his monster chops as a soloist...yeah.
Every time I hear Neil, his playing bring tears to my eyes. His influence on my life is pivotal. He'd be uncomfortable hearing this but, thank you for the inspiration.
As I was watchin you two during the song and then the bass starting picking up pace and Neil releases. Made me smile. First timers listening are ALWAYS blown away
Time Stand Still is incredibly relatable to anyone over the age of 30, you'll see what I'm on about if you give it a listen. In my opinion it is also Rush's greatest song.
Oh hell yeah, an amazing song - saw them do it live on the 'Hold Your Fire' tour back in '88 and it really blew my mind. I'm 53 now, and the lyrics are more relatable every year.
I've seen them live. 3 DUDES DO THIS WHOLE THING! And it sounds exactly like this. Geddy Lee sings, plays the bass, and the damned keyboard at the same time... its insane.
Oddly enough the drummer Neil Peart wrote most of their lyrics. There bass player Geddy Lee was the singer and Alex lifeson is so underrated as a guitar player. One of the most tasteful players to ever pick up a guitar
Agreed 100%. I have been a Rush fan since the 1970s. Whenever I heard Rush, I thought of the band Yes. Many of the classic bands from the 1960s and 1970s are in a class of their own - Led Zeppelin, Queen, Rush, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, etc.
@@madmann5373 must have been amazing! I love the Rush Live in Rio video. The sound is a little off. My understanding is that they had no time for a sound check. But the setlist is great and the live version of La Villa Strangiato is spectacular. My first concert was Frank Zappa in 1975. But my favourite concert was Pink Floyd in 1994. That was so sad about Neil Peart. My son attended guitar camp many years ago and the guest instructor was Alex Lifeson.
The 30th anniversary of this song is this year 2021. Hard to believe I used to jam to this back in my high school days and here we are all still enjoying it 30 years later. Wow! The power of great music unites us all! RIP Neal Peart.
This is a THREE piece band!!! Geddy Lee (bass, vocals, keyboards, lyricist), Alex Lifeson (guitars), and Neil Peart (drums, percussion, lyricist). Peart died in Jan of 2020 and will always be, to me, the greatest drummer ever!! Amazing band, like no other...They were on a whole different level!! The first time I saw them live was at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas back in 1979 and OMG...OMG...OMG!!! MORE PLEASE!!
Here’s a starter list of songs you should check out by Rush and why 1. Spirit of the Radio (the perfect song) 2. La Villa Strangiatto (the greatest instrumental) 3. Roll the Bones (Rush’s (I think) first time doing any kind of rap 4. Between the Wheels (One of my personal favorites. Or if you don’t like any of those then just go to any album and pick a song, I don’t think they have any bad songs.
@Starlight Frontier most Rush albums are underrated, as much as I love moving Pictures, I’ve just heard it so much. It’s like listening to Money for a lot of hardcore Pink Floyd fans.
God I love seeing reflections and introductions like this into cross genre conversations. Good for you guys! (By the way, check out Rush 2112. It'll blow your mind. But remember it's a STORY. It's incredibly multi layered. The entire theme is about freedom, integrity and control)
I first heard Rush at the age of about 10 in El Paso, TX on KLAQ. Spirit of Radio. This band has ‘gotten me’, and been coursing through my veins ever since, about 44 years lol. I love seeing reactions from younger musicians who have never heard their genius. 👍🏻
Great reaction! Your library must continue!! Love to see you check out Working Man, the song that started their career. Also, check out Anthem and Spirit of Radio.
Geddy Lee has just an amazing voice, definitely stands out. I think he’s influenced many singers like Cedric Bixler-Zavala of At The Drive-In/The Mars Volta and Dave Bayley of Glass Animals. Check out those bands, by the way and in particular, Gooey by Glass Animals. Love your channel and the reactions. Keep up the good work.
One of the greatest bands ever. Everyone knows Neil Peart and in my opinion, I think his bandmates tend to get overlooked by the casual fan. Alex Lifeson is not given his due respect in the mainstream, but listen to anyone that truly knows rock guitarists and he is always in their top 10. Then you have Geddy Lee, arguably the best rock bassist of all time. 3 man band with all 3 being among the best at their craft. What other band can claim that? Maybe Led Zep has 2, but no other band is close. The thing I love about them is their down to earth humility. No drug overdoses, no cancelled concerts because a prima donna artist can't make it to the stage, etc. They rocked and toured for over 40 years!!! I saw them in 2010 and they sounded as good as the day they started. I may be mistaken, but I believe they trail only the Beatles with number of rock albums sold in the U.S. The "Live in Rio" videos (YYZ & La Villa) are awesome. "Working Man" was the song that put them on the map and is definitely worth a review.
I always find this song is sound and music crystallised. I'm always grateful as a miles that my parents raised me with this great Canadain band. There music is still on our radios we're I live in Canada.
The thing about Peart and Carey: They can go absolute ballistic, smash every drum in a variety of rhythms, and always, always find the 1. The fill never goes too far.
My favorite Rush song. Hard to believe it's a 3 man band. It has everything : meaningful lyrics, genius guitar riffs, vocals, synthesizers and of course the funky beats and rythmn of The Professor Neil Peart, RIP 💖💖💖

@@diegosolis7658 Been a RUSH fan since Fly By Night seen them live 9 times live. Glad to see new fans.
The lyrics on Tom Sawyer were written by Peart with a Canadian poet, Pye Dubois.
Just think, when this came out, it was played on regular FM radio. Everyone listened to it, including a lot of elementary school kids.
"changes aren't permanent, but change is" is one of my favorite lines, ever.
Same here. No changes are permanent...but change is. Freakin' deep.
The “Book” of Rush is a set of encyclopedias, seriously!
✌️☝️☝️✌️
You MUST read the chapter "Spirit of the Radio"
Been jamming to this for 35 years.
It still gives me cold chills.
I LOVE to see someone experience what we've had as our foundation for so long.
There's so much more!!
Geddy Lee might just be the greatest rock musician ever.
@diver69 I would add David Grohl to the list, but not above Geddy (yet).
100% truth
knowing the story of his parents and how close we came to never having him is a bit terrifying 😬
RUSH is a virtuoso BAND! There are none better.
La Villa Strangiato 🔥🔥🔥
YES! Do La Villa Strangiato next!!
Agreed, but they loving drumming so much, they should do Neil's drum solo.
Subdivisions. Just as relevant today as when it came out back in the mid 80's.
My attempt at Subdivisions! ua-cam.com/video/NYlvVIduVkY/v-deo.html
Yes, EXACTLY!!!
From Signals to Roll the Bones they were mostly dreadful.
Yes
Incredible musicians, outstanding vocals. One of the best rock bands ever…
Yep, Rush lyrics are fire. And they were written by the drummer.
Ankaa Black RIP
More amazing Rush songs:
working man
Limelight
YYZ
The Spirit of Radio
need to add
2112
Natural Science
Subdivisions
Red Barchetta
Fountain Of Lamneth
The Necromancer
etc
Live!!!!
YYZ with the video so you can see the magic happen. I'm from Toronto (YYZ) and that song was the theme song for our local TV station for years, CityTV. Great band, great songs!
Xanadu, La Villa Strangiatto, Leave That Thing Alone (Live Video), The Garden (Live video), ad infinitum...
Working Man is not a good choice. Any song without Peart playing shouldn't be on the list
YYZ live in Rio is the bomb shizznizzle... gotta get a reaction to that!
@@ewolffman It has the distinction of having been sung along with, even though it's instrumental. You owe yourself this 5 minutes of pure musical nirvana!

Listening to people comparing Rush to Tool in this direction is like listening to people saying, "Man, if these Beatles we're about to listen to are anything like Badfinger, we may be in for a treat!"
Hilarious.
Amazing that all of that sound came out of three guys. RIP Neal.
There will never be another band like RUSH. Exceptionally talented, unique in their respecive disciplines and perfectly synchronized like no other band.
For God’s sake, OPEN THE BOOK OF RUSH!!!!
Natural Science, please!!!
My favorite Rush song!! Good choice.
“Wheels within wheels in a spiral array..” always bob my head at that part.
Yes, natural Science is such a masterpiece !!!!!!
Jeez you’re already going through the Tool rabbit whole, and now this one!? Just epic. Do Red Barchetta or YYZ live in Rio next.
Red Barchetta is absolute in its greatness
And when you think you're ready, do 2112, the whole song.
And then Xanadu from Exit Stage Left.
And then La Villa Strangiato.
I would recommend doing the studio YYZ over rio live. Or if anything do the Exit stage left version
I am subscribing just because of this song. Best 3 piece band of all time. Looking forward to many more reactions.
"I have seen this band compared to Tool." Me as an old Rush fan... who is Tool and if Rush came first, shouldn't this "Tool" be compared to Rush?
In the upside down world we live in King Crimson were the support on a Tool tour.
Yes Tom, you are correct. The same reason Hendrix is better than SRV. It’s the imagery to creativity that’s what makes you the best.
You'll probably love Tool. I showed them to my dad and he can't stop listening to them.
It's not just their probable rankings, though. It's the chemistry of the band.
Pye's original lyric was called "Louie the Warrior" and Neil edited down and added some of his own lines.
FiveFingerFrame,....Pye was the lyricist not the bassist. Mike Tilka and Dave Miles played bass on all of Max's albums.
A classic my friends
Every time I hear Neil, his playing bring tears to my eyes. His influence on my life is pivotal. He'd be uncomfortable hearing this but, thank you for the inspiration.
The Spirit of Radio is one of Rush's many "must listen" tracks
My wake-up song EVERY day
In the words of Daniel Bryan, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" Rush is a wonderful rabbit hole to fall down.
How about listen to Yes! Another great rabbit hole lol.
@@mattolsziewski7164 Absolutely man. They are such a talented group. Great choice. I'm gonna go listen them right now.
matt olsziewski Or Geddy Lee playing with Yes at the Hall of Fame.
I'm 52 & Been lost in the hole for 38 yrs 😊
Great video guys. Quick trivia, Neil Peart (pronounced "peert") wrote most if not all of Rush's lyrics. R.I.P. the greatest
Please go down the Rush rabbit hole!!! Amazing band, so many classics
Also the only time they ever used a guest vocalist, Aimee Mann.
omg yes. every time i hear it i’m right back at 9th grade homecoming hoping kevin will ask me to dance 🥰
Oh hell yeah, an amazing song - saw them do it live on the 'Hold Your Fire' tour back in '88 and it really blew my mind. I'm 53 now, and the lyrics are more relatable every year.
Without Rush there would be no tool or Dream Theater.
the daddy's of prog
When you listen to "Tom Sawyer" ....Your next one should be: "The Spirit of Radio"
yes sir
Live performances are recommended for Rush. The quality is spot on and you get to see that three guys can actually produce this.
I've seen them live.
3 DUDES DO THIS WHOLE THING! And it sounds exactly like this. Geddy Lee sings, plays the bass, and the damned keyboard at the same time... its insane.
Gives me joy watching your discovery. A fan since 15 yrs of age and almost 60 now. The professor!!! A socially savvy poet. I miss his wisdom
Tool Tuesday's- Rush Thursday's the book is just as deep as Tool. Skilled instrumentals and deep lyrics, 20yrs before tool.
It’s much deeper than Tool’s just because of longevity alone.
Oddly enough the drummer Neil Peart wrote most of their lyrics. There bass player Geddy Lee was the singer and Alex lifeson is so underrated as a guitar player. One of the most tasteful players to ever pick up a guitar
Tool is a great band, but rush is in whole different legue.
Yea, thats what I said too.
no comparison
Agreed 100%. I have been a Rush fan since the 1970s. Whenever I heard Rush, I thought of the band Yes. Many of the classic bands from the 1960s and 1970s are in a class of their own - Led Zeppelin, Queen, Rush, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, etc.
@@nicolast.davinci1561 My first concert was rush 1978.😀🇨🇦
Here’s a starter list of songs you should check out by Rush and why
1. Spirit of the Radio (the perfect song)
2. La Villa Strangiatto (the greatest instrumental)
3. Roll the Bones (Rush’s (I think) first time doing any kind of rap
4. Between the Wheels (One of my personal favorites.
Or if you don’t like any of those then just go to any album and pick a song, I don’t think they have any bad songs.
You're the only person I've ever seen mention Roll the Bones! It's such an underrated song and album
@Starlight Frontier most Rush albums are underrated, as much as I love moving Pictures, I’ve just heard it so much. It’s like listening to Money for a lot of hardcore Pink Floyd fans.
@@starlightfrontier2218 Their 90s stuff in general is criminally underrated
As Kirk Hammett once said, "How can just 3 guys, make that sound?". In my book, RUSH is definitely in top 5 greatest rock bands of all time!!!
I've been told by guitarists that if you can play RUSH's "Villa Strangiata" you can play anything.
7:38 “ he’s talking about me” we all have said that at one point while listening to rush
Yep. My mind also isn’t for rent to any god or government.
Literally, Tom Sawyer has his own book that introduced Hick Finn.
5:00 "this is fire"
people who already know the song:
OOH JUST YOU WAIT BOI
Lol right?
Great reaction! Your library must continue!! Love to see you check out Working Man, the song that started their career. Also, check out Anthem and Spirit of Radio.
Yeah "that drummer"! I think the God of drumming would be happy knowing you called him a Kraken! Welcome to Rush!
YYZ NEXT
Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass, keyboard
Alex Leifson - Guitars, pedals
Neil Pert - Drums, Percussion, Lyricist
I always find this song is sound and music crystallised. I'm always grateful as a miles that my parents raised me with this great Canadain band. There music is still on our radios we're I live in Canada.
Rush’s 2112: a sci-fi story told over the whole album. Each “song” is basically a chapter. And the whole album is one long track.
You guys haven't listened too Rush before?! I don't believe you. Everyone has listened to Rush.
Try Rush - YYZ. The beat at the beginning is morse code YYZ. YYZ is their home airport code. They always happy to see YYZ on the bags.
And remember it’s pronounced zed not zee. 🇨🇦
There're a lot of skilled drummers out there but what made Neil stand out was his musicality. Always the right fill or rhythm at the right place.
The drummer Neil Peart, God rest his soul, wrote all their lyrics!!
The thing about Peart and Carey: They can go absolute ballistic, smash every drum in a variety of rhythms, and always, always find the 1. The fill never goes too far.
Geddy is the vocalist, Neil is the lyricist.
React to Gojira - Another World. It’s really good, and even the guitar tone is so badass!
the "Interweb" also. Lyrics written by Drummer Neal Peart.
This is the fourth or fifth vid I've checked out by the TT and this is my fave so far. Thanks for the content
My favorite Rush song. Hard to believe it's a 3 man band. It has everything : meaningful lyrics, genius guitar riffs, vocals, synthesizers and of course the funky beats and rythmn of The Professor Neil Peart, RIP 💖💖💖
time to hit up Pearl Jam yo, MTV live "Black" - the greatest ever rock/grunge love/break up song! also check out POrch live at Pinkpop 92 - has the best ever stage dive!!
Rush tracks? Limelight, Driven, Fly By Night, I could go on till the end of time, start with them
Next Rush reaction sould be Limelight.. its one of their other hits
Rush is one of those bands that has just put out one amazing album after another! Thanks for giving this awesome music a chance! Keep rockin’ it out! 🤘🏻
That was fun to watch. I've been listening to rush for 35 years and it's cool to see other people sit and really listen to it.
