*shedding a sombre tear for all the KSP2 bugs and glitches from which Danny would have made highly entertaining content. Anyway... BRING ON THE NEW KSP1 MODS
I think what happened when you "paused rendering" is that the origin point didn't yet get moved to the camera due to confusing the game by pausing and unpausing while loading, so since the origin point was really far away (likely Kerbin or the center of Mun?) Everything had severe floating point rounding errors causing what you were seeing, which is triangles snapping onto the closest valid floating point they can find which are very far and in between due to the inaccuracy of floating points when at such big numbers away from the origin
I guess KSP2 doesn't calculate that the force of gravity inside an object is only equivalent to the diameter of the object still "below" you. Instead of just approximates it to a single point in the center of each planet.
Usually that effect is negligible, even if you're in a super deep crater. So probably not worth spending any development/cpu time on. The weird thing is why they don't simply explode the spacecraft when it's below the surface.
The good news is that KSP 2 dying means the modding community is now more unified behind KSP 1. I still mourn the loss potential... but I'm frankly unsurprising. When KSP2 advertised overhaul features like colonies over basics like physics, coordinates, and game stability, I was already getting concerned. The main limiting factor of KSP 1 wasn't the imagination, bling, or progression, it was and remains the basic physics. The longer KSP 1 is stable, the more modders will be able to work with and improve exactly that.
