Such a great song and so ahead of it's time for those days...I especially love the bridge (begins with, "If I were you...") in this song...OUTstanding!
I love the choppy rhythm or counter-rhythm or what it is, also some pretty weird chords - sort of jazzy, as if there is some Bossa Nova hidden deep within it. But then again, it’s very British... John’s raspy voice as if he had too much to drink is also something. I find it impossible to do it honor with my guitar playing and singing, so I always blame it on the missing handclaps...

Lennons version of ‘Silhouettes’ & always loved John's voice with the early Beatles. Felt it showcased Lennons unique raw voice ~ just like when he sang 'You Can't Do That' & 'If I Fell' & his early Beatles songs!! So cool that you appeared to include the actual notes/doodles The Beatles used when composing "No Reply"! Tysm..💖💕
It'd be impossible for me to pick a favorite Beatles song, but I might be able to come up with a Top Twenty. _No Reply_ would definitely be on that list. The sound of John's double-tracked vocal, the power of his Gibson J-160E, the addition of George Martin's piano in the bridge, Ringo's Inspired syncopated snare hits in the verse, and of course the sheer majesty of the bridge, aided & abetted by Paul's soaring harmony. The song is a masterpiece.
You are really spoiling us with this early catalogue. Am in Liverpool on a short break, treated myself to an open top bus tour around the city and out to Woolton, Aigburth, Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields with a tour guide from Birkenhead, who was pretty good but managed to mangle some of the Beatles facts. Tomorrow revisiting the childhood homes of John and Paul on a National Trust tour. Will see what interesting vibes I pick up this time. All highly recommended. Greetings from a sunny August evening from a hotel opposite The Albert Dock.
@CRAIG SCHEFF it's different. Lennon had a style and grit that is greater than every singer of all time. McCartney had a grace and harmonizing ability unparalleled. I agree with your Helter Skelter praise but in that exact same album John Lennon performs I'm so Tired and Yer Blues, McCartney did not have the pure power of Lennon that is indisputable.
@@stephenstrang590 Lennon's voice whether screaming or not had more power and soul than even Paul, which is saying something because Paul as a singer and melodist, not to mention harmony singer was incredible. Most of the Beatles music was written by John and Paul. However, the lead singer was usually the main writer on the song. You can hear John's voice singing the verse in this song, and this song was mainly written by John. During a 1980 interview, John made a point that despite the fact the official writers of these songs were John and Paul, he differentiated the styles of John and Paul and indicated it was pretty easy to tell them apart. I agree. But I have to wonder, if Paul came up with the notes on the "No Reply" chorus in this song, which both Paul and John were singing. This part really made the song, my favorite on the "Beatles 65" Album.
The photos that accompany the video are from the recording of this song, on this particular date. I could have used the Anthology version of takes 1 and take 2, but the final finished version (to me) was too beautiful not to use.
I've listened to this song many times over the years and never really payed much attention to what he's really saying. If you think about it, he's stalking this girl in an extremely dark and creepy sort of way. In run for your life he's basically saying he'll kill her if she ever talks to another guy. Norwegian wood is basically a happy little song about a guy who burns a woman's house down because she didn't have sex with him. At least that's what I get from it.
The level of musical sophistication in this song is off the charts, dynamics and tonal variation, The Beatles were just incredible.
Well said.
This song is so well written that it stands on it's own without any gimmicky instrumentation or special effects. Pure early Lennon/McCartney magic!
I’d say Harrison too. He added the samba beat to it
