I have to say I’ve never been a fan of mid century modern, I know don’t gasp😀 you have styled your home so beautifully that I’m seeing the light. I’m 68 years old next month so you see I grew up with early American, mid century modern, traditional. You have got the Eye for it for sure. Beautiful 🤩

Hi beautiful Laura xx You are happy and it shows😘 great idea putting a “shelf” behind the sofa for drinks and of course popcorn👏I would personally source a round or oval coffee table as I feel it would soften the square lines. You have GREAT taste. I am also on the look out for any type of mid century bull when I’m out thrifting here in the UK. P.s You’re more than welcome to come and stay with me if ever you come this side of the pond 💃

Wanda, I’m 67 and same for me. I grew up with this style (also like Laura, in Oregon). I’m very nostalgic for some of the things from that era. Laura does it up better that the originals!! I love her esthetic! 💚💚💚

I feel the same way. I am a vintage glass/transfer ware/salt glaze pottery/states metal collector. I never cared for mid century or bohemian decor until I found Laura’s channel. Now I’m always on the watch for her latest video and have binge watched so many of her videos. She’s so likable and talented.

68 in September here in coastal NC. And yes, so aware because I saw this style in TV shows, but I grew in in a less than affluent place that never got on board with mid century. All family and locals were still stuck in the 40s and 50s. A friends mother got an aluminum Christmas tree with the twirling multicolored light. I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

Yes, yes to the long shelf behind the sofa and maybe have a few cord access spots drilled out along the way for lamps, Christmas or a cool box that is really a phone charger or....well you get it!

Laura, what a beautiful job you have done with that cozy room! I'm 72, female, and you have taken me back in time, lots of memories of my mom and dad's lamps, wall clock and furniture. I'd like to see more about Jessie's record album collection; I still collect and play mine on my turntable from years ago: love that original sound, nothing compares to it. You are such a sweetheart, I enjoy all your videos and the journey you take us on when you shop. You're a young, free-spirited woman with an old soul; continue to be blessed and blessing each of us with your presence. 🤗💖

What a gorgeous family room❗️ Reminds me of our living room but ours was on much smaller scale and cheaper when I was growing up in the 60’s, I graduated in ‘68. Our beautiful mom was a single mom raising six children all on her own. The globe wall hanging I would do side by side and yes on the faux sofa table for holding drinks.

I love your basement. The whole thing, but especially that sectional. Wow Wee!!! And that “zoing” piece - I love that too. You guys are good at picking out art. I suck at that! When you showed the globe, before you even said it was two pieces, I immediately thought the other piece of it was in the next room exactly where that one was - like it was going through the wall! 😂 You should be an interior decorator! ♥️ (I love the idea of the sofa table too!)

Thank you for giving such a detailed explanation of how you decorated, why you chose the pieces you did, and why they fit into your estetics. Also, the education you give us in mid century culture is interesting and invaluable. Many times I see a superficial, ( and dare I say) generic, repetitious, and UA-cam allegorius fluff without the long term knowledge of a study. I know this is long winded, but I really wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the content you offer. Keep it up!

Yes to the board behind the couch for shelving/drinks/lights/plants. I had one for years and recently got rid of it and then it absolutely did turn into a hassle trying to figure out where to put drinks and food. Plus they add dimension and more visual architectural elements. You could also make it shelving down behind the couch to put away things you may not have other space for, like photo albums, blankets, etc.

I love your basement! It is decorated beautifully. I would not paint the beams black. I think they would darken the room and be " heavy" in look. It looks just right as is, cozy and warm.

  • @paulaapplegate7085

I know you have heard this already but.... the board shelf behind that fantastic couch is a genius idea! And can I give another round of applause for the couch! I was looking for the trunk or basket full of blankets for the (Paula named) "Cousins Couch". I can just see the kids all snuggled in, half sleeping, half giggling while the adults are in the kitchen doing their holiday cheers. What memories will be made in this room!
I have always loved globes and maps, so when I saw those exquisite metal pieces I must admit I squealed. Side by side is a must for these.
As for my favorite find in the room ... would have to be your cat. I still remember your reaction to finding him. I have felt that a few times in my life. So now every time I see him or see you pet him I feel the warmth and excitement of finding that unicorn, that something that has eluded me for decades and then one day is there, just silently saying my name. You know it will be with you forever. That the wait was truly worth the searching.
Thank you for sharing with us and I'm so glad that you have a partner who can enjoy these adventures with you.

Everything looks amazing! I can't choose a favorite item. I think you were right to hesitant about painting the beams black. On the video the darker brown tone of the beams blends so nicely with the other wood tones. Black might be too jarring. Whatever you decide, it will be perfect. A wooden rail behind the couch would be take up little space and would be very convenient for drinks. I didn't even notice the cabinet that hides the duct work until you pointed it out. It is not an eyesore. Wonderful room!

I say yes to the board! I did the exact same thing in my old townhouse where I raised my daughter. It had a really strange layout and the couch only fit on one wall that was the exact same length so I couldn't have side tables. It was also was too narrow of a room to put a coffee table in cuz it blocked the walkway. So I diy'd a shelf from a stained board with L brackets so we could set our drinks somewhere and also use it to display some decor!

At 12:47---talking about your glass top coffee table contrasting well with the rug's texture.....honestly, it's the BEST contrast/compliment to your HUGE sofa. I know from experience that having a glass top table in a space with heavy furniture effectively keeps a feeling of 'flow' and greatly reduces the feeling of BULK that solid tables (even smaller ones) create when paired with super heavy/large furniture.

Love your space: it is warm and inviting. The board is a good idea. I'd stagger the globes, I think that shows more imagination than just side by side. Your videos are my favorite because you always have so much enthusiasm. Keep up the good work.

It looks fantastic! I would not change one thing. The beams look beautiful as they are, I would not paint them black.
The thing I love most about your space....is you have designed it to celebrate family, togetherness and fun. Anyone fortunate to be invited to your movie night is surely to feel very welcomed. Your family, nieces and nephews will talk of Aunt Laura and Uncle Jesse's house gatherings for the rest of their lives..Making memories - a treasure for the heart & soul.

Awww this just made me tear up! My 7 year old niece begs her mom to let her come over whenever she’s coming by to check out the progress. It makes me so happy! After 4 years of feeling isolated because the traffic was so terrible to get to our home, this is the exact reason we moved back 🥰 To create these special memories together ❤️ First thing she does when she comes over is to run to the top floor, throw something down the laundry chute, run down to the basement and exclaim “laundry chute still works” 😂

@@leftcoastrevivals Awwwh your house is magical to her!
And you and Jesse are the coolest Aunt & Uncle for sure in her eyes. Years from now she will tell her own children of you both & the amazing times your family had in the home.
You & Jesse have been chosen as the proprietors of an amazing home that is going to bring your family such wonderful memories. But don't forget the pictures...please. We want to see the pictures!
God Bless you and Jesse as you enjoy your 1st holidays being...HOME. ❤

I was born in 1952 and grew up calling a sofa a "davenport". When I got to grade school nobody knew what I was talking about! it was like a foreign language. While sofa and couch are interchangeable, most people in the trade use the word sofa. I have spent three days binging you on UA-cam. You are so very talented and relaxing to watch! Thank you!

My generation grew up calling them couches. Funny for each generation and region has their own words 😆 I can’t wait to see what the younger generations call them.

Love the side by side for the brass globe art and we used to have a 6inch shelf/table behind our sectional against the wall in our old house and we loved it! I really like your idea of doing a waterfall type look on the ends.

All looks fabulous amazing all the things you have put together Re the shelf behind the sofa, no candles- fire hazard with fabric of sofa and hair when people are sitting down. Everything else sounds wonderful . So enjoying watching you put it all together x

Basement looks amazing, such a good call on the wood paneling. Making those tables to behind your couch are super easy to make. Go for it.

Your space looks very homey, comfortable and cozy! ! What I like about second hand items is that there is a story that comes with finding exchange of them! Plus the hunt is fun and makes the find even better! I would hang the globes side by side and the a shelf behind the couch would give a great console "table" Look! A place to put your drinks etc without crowding your space with mini tables.❤❤❤

We've had high slender tables behind the sofa, and you're right - it's convenient to keep your drink on the table behind the sofa. What you're describing sounds like a drink railing at a bar that has a big dance floor in the middle. You set your drink on the railing & you can keep your eye on it while you dance. Great idea!

This room is amazing. The sectional looks perfect. This room must be large. I love that you kept all the wood panels as is. The ceiling is beautiful. I like your idea adding wood all around sofa for holding decor or drinks. I think hanging the globe art side by side will be more attractive. You have a lot of talent in finding and displaying thrift store items and making it unique. I can’t wait to see how you decorate each room. Love your home.🏠

Love the idea of the board behind the couch, it can be very subtle just about 6 inches in depth and you could even instal charging points at various intervals having those hidden away as well 😀

The space is fabulous! I'm green with envy..that couch!! I do love the idea of a shelf behind it as you suggest. The bombshell bar is going to be sooo cool! SO love that Jessie is as invested in the decorating of your place as you are. You two truly are a fabulous team.
