    As someone who watch Amy's videos for at least over 2 years. I just realize she did her research really well, like extremely well. I live in Hong Kong for my entire life, the foods and histories she found are authentic and very local. Normal tourists or youtubers only go to good restaurants to eat when they came here. But Amy knows exactly where the locals would go and eat.

      Agree. I’ve had several channels and lots of similar content pop up since I randomly came across this one. Not a fan of the uber-rich people only going to the top places, just not my thing I guess, nothing wrong with it. I just find it boring as all you see on tv is hyper glamorous stuff. I think you see the true nature of Chinese people this way too. In fancy places they’re always going to be so reserved and not engage much. It’s also nice to watch a woman exploring, I relate more.

      There’s been a few others who have made HK videos recently, of course, their generic choices includes places that paid them to promote, like “The Chairman”. their food is not really worth the 1 michelin star other than the expensive decor. 😅 i’d much rather watch Amy than the others.

      @@BenjiSun I think the Dim Sum at the Cairman is worth the star, but whenever I go to HK I mix my eats. One or two high end, but the rest will be restaurants mostly frequented by blue collar people. Luckily I have friends in HK that can tell me the best places to go.

      It's always odd to me that the places tourists go and the places locals go are usually so different. You'd think that tourists would want to see what the local food is like. That's what I want to do when I travel! So I don't know why others don't do that.
      Though the area where I live doesn't really have "tourist" places. It has a donut shop that people outside the area CLAIM is for tourists, but locals go there in droves too.

      Although most of them I like it except the crab...... I hate opening crab or lobster
      Every time when our family is seafood my mom will open for me
      I have learned how to open a crab for a long time
      But I still can't learn the method
      But the French toast are really my favorite almost every two weeks I will eat for 1 to 2 times
      Especially need to order with a cold milk tea
      At last the Cha Siu 11:28 you introduce I really like just a slice of beef
      It's just like two small papers
      Some Roast shops their food are really tasty
      But by wallet are not allowed me to afford.
      Because one two roast food with rice with one drinks almost late 70 to 80 dollars

I like how you explain the history! and i don't know you can speak a little Cantonese good job! yes all the things that tourist (foreigner) find special in Hong Kong are fast disappearing because of new regulations (ie reluctant to issue new license or getting them renew or transfer) (like boat noodles and dai pai dong) hopefully your video will help the officials to rediscover how other people enjoy hong kong and not just building more and more shopping malls and expect tourists to love it

    I wonder if typhoon shelter crab is related to the African chili crab from Macau. Macau has a few dishes that were transformed from cooking of Portuguese colonies from all over the world. Check it out.

    it helps to learn a bit of crab anatomy to enjoy the crab dish. Then it would not be so messy to eat. The meat in the body are contained in separate "chambers". The pointed end of the legs can be used to pick out the crab meat if special tools are not available.

    9:14 the food court!!! I haven't been to Hong Kong for a time but I still think about the blood pudding 🤤🤤🤤. I miss Hong Kong food so much. Especially our stinky tofu. The story about how the typhoon crab came to be is pretty cool. Thanks for visiting Hong Kong 🙏🙏🙏 it's really nice to reminisce.

    I hear you say 'm goi' a lot as thank you in Cantonese but there's some nuance to the word; it's usually said as thank you for a favor or to ask someone for a favor (similar to how please is used). A more generally used word for thank you is duo jie which is more accepted for any situation (especially if you're not a native speaker) instead of m goi. So in this scenario, I think I would use duo jie because you are paying him for the food rather than him doing you a favor. But when you order the food, you can say I want XYZ, m goi; or if say you asked if you could get chopsticks and use m goi as thank you. Over all, it's fine either way, people will understand you but this is more if you want to learn the nuances of how to say thank you. Regardless, love your videos!

      I think saying m goi in the scenario of receiving food you'v paid for is correct. Duo jie would be more appropriate in the context of receiving a gift

      There are two ways of saying “thank you” in Cantonese. Mm Goi = Thank you when someone renders you services. Dor ze = thank you when someone gives you something.

    i'm so used to taking the bus or taxi i forgot there's still plenty of simple ferries going between many waterways here. btw, there's quite a few typhoon shelters all over Hong Kong, the stirfried crab and some of those other boat dishes, were more commonplace in the Causeway Bay shelter before all the development from the 90's onwards. Back before in the 80's and earlier, It was fairly common to get on the boats in Causeway Bay to enjoy a boat people seafood feast. Now most of the surviving boat feasts and fishermen have moved to other areas like Lei Yu Mun or Ap Lei Chau. Even the famous Lau Fau Shan area is pretty much all devoid of good seafood fare nowadays other than the few catering mainly to tour groups.
    If you come back next time, i'd recommend doing some research on some of the hiking routes and maybe get some sights and food at some of the rarely seen places, like 張記士多 (you might need to order in advance as they don't live in the village anymore, they come up just for doing business for hikers) in Sha Lo Tung village (an excellent dragonfly viewing area, it's a little boggy, be careful if you step off the trails) on Mount Pat Sin Leng, and you can walk down towards Tai Wai afterwards and see the Butterfly Reserve there(鳳園蝴蝶保育區), or what's left of it after Li Ka Shing built his garbage "ping fung" style skyscraper wall there (Mont Vert). or head out to Wong Shek Pier and take a boat tour of Kut O and Ap Chau islands. There's a lot of cool geological formations there and you can see some comparatively rarely visited parts of Hong Kong. (wear sun screen, there's not a lot of shade. also, your China mobile might work there as it's so close to the SZ border)

    30 seconds ago? I've been blessed! Right after my hardest final! Amy, you're food videos make me so excited to be studying abroad this summer! Although I'll be in Taiwan and unable to travel to the places you visit in your videos, you're videos have helped me to be less scared about eating food abroad. In fact, I think it's one of the things I'm now looking forward to the most!

    I remember my Dad talking about the boat noodles he enjoyed so much in Hong Kong and I never asked him what they were, I assumed it had something to do with their shape 🤦🏼‍♀️
    In his last trip to Hong Kong he finally bought my Mom the diamond he had been promising her for over 30 years; he would tease her always when he went on business trips and would cut pictures out of magazines and send them to her or he would draw a diamond shape on a postcard he'd mail to her 😂
    He wouldn't leave that diamond in the safe at his hotel either, he said he spent a good 2 weeks with it inside a hidden pocket in his Tilley jacket and he would keep his hand over the pocket. Good thing too because hotel staff were caught (not by him) stealing from my Dad's suitcase.

    Amy, might I offer you a suggestion ? Next time when you eat soy sauce fry noodles, put some hoisin paste/sauce on them if it's available, that's what a lot of Hong Kongers do with fried soy sauce noodles.

    I remember visiting Hong Kong back when I was 12 years old. ❤We went to the Ocean Park, Disneyland etc. just typical tourist spots. And it was a really fast-paced trip, we didn’t have a chance to dive into the local cuisines. Actually Hong Kong
    delicacies share a lot in common with the Cantonese ones, with more western elements combined I guess.

    The honey glaze and sweetness of char siu is not there once it soak in noodles soup. Roes always the best part for Typhoon Shelter crabs. Beef Brisket always go well with noodles. And the mini french toast is like heavenly dessert.

    Have you ever tried Taiwanese food. Taiwan’s night market is legionary. Beef noodles, oyster omelette, green onion pancakes just to name a few. In addition, Buba tea and Din Tai Fung originated in Taiwan. Highly recommended.

    I love your videos and had a little advice on crab. Start by separating each leg and whatever body stays attached. Then break each joint and pull apart, starting from the body end, which should remove the tendons and leave clean meat in each section. If there is a claw, pull the thumb away from the leg and remove which should let you remove the claw meat, whole. The body meat is a little fussy but worth picking through. Hope this helps!

    I've never heard of the Amoy brand till now. I found it interesting that it's one of the more popular brands in Hong Kong because A-Moy is Xiamen (said in their local dialect)

    As a fellow Australian 🇦🇺 I’m really envious. My background is Cantonese,Dad cooked very bland and simple mainly Steamed Silver Bream with ginger shallots and shiitake mushrooms. Keep up with those vids ❤ watching your channel from your home town

      Dude im cantonese in Europe now, with tons of vid nowadays you could try cook with your dad before he gets too old. I hope you can understand the language to try the crab like 避風塘炒蟹 which ingredients is mostly garlic ginger pepper shallot pretty handy. I'd suggest the 烏烏有煮意 channel which is also Aussie now.

    In Canada we are only allow to catch male crabs NOT FEMALE crabs and with a legal size which mean anything smaller has to be release, I believe this ensure this keep the seafood not over harvested like other part of the Asian world!

    These foods are all traditional Hong Kong delicacies, but next time you eat boat noodles, you should try Lai Feni(賴粉) for the type of noodles. You may be pleasantly surprised.

    Sampan is a very small boat and not that big. In Cantonese, "sam" phonetically means "three" and "pan" means "plank". That is a boat made from three pieces of wooden planks. You can imagine how small the boat is.

    Just a note for people learning to use soya sauce in cooking. A little goes a long way (especially the light soya sauce) so be conservative and taste test often. Dark soya sauce has a slight sweetness so it works amazing with fatty meats like pork
