    I saw Frisco Pier in one of the shots after it was hit by the hurricane. Fished next to it back in '12 and was catching black drum (8) in the 20inch range. On the right side were black drum and on the left were nice size mullets. Had a great day of fishing. Enjoyed the vid and the memories it brought back. Thanks

    Love the OBX.lived in little brown ,round /hexagonal/octagonal house in kill devil hills for around 8-9 months in the early 90’s.could step of the back deck ,walk about 50-75 feet,go under 1 strand of barbed wire ,walk a little bit more a come out of scrub bushes/trees right at the base of Wright brothers monument.That little house is still there.not sure why.nice houses all around it now & the land must be worth a fortune by now.check it out on google earth .short bike ride to the beach.fond memories.That broken down pier area looks awesome.where exactly was this video taken?

    Can you use moss green braid to fish with? I dont want to have to spool on mono if i dont have to. Thanks!

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  7 років тому

      We fish with braid a lot....however, we use 40lb mono as a leader. Not sure that it is really needed in the surf but it helps to give the line a little protection from the different fish with teeth. The braid is so thin, that it gets cut pretty fast with sharp teeth.

    It breaks my heart to see the Frisco Pier in the background in such sad shape. All kinds of stuff got caught off that pier like tarpon, king mackerel, huge sharks, amberjack, cobia, the former world record Spanish mackerel, etc. I wish the NC Aquarium would take it and rebuild it out of concrete like they did Jeanettes Pier in Nags Head. It really sucks that's it's been like that for the last few years.

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  10 років тому

      Yep, there are some nice cuts that are pretty easy to see. If you go out at low tide, you can really see them. Make a mental note and fish them at high tide. There are still some that you can fish at low tide. We walked straight out from the house and fished within sight of the pier the whole trip.

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  9 років тому

      You can get drum all year but fall is best, followed by the spring. Stripers are usually Jan-Feb but I don't have experience with them.

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  10 років тому

      Any structure helps but I don't think it is mandatory to catch fish in the surf. I think reading the surf will help you more. There are other youtube videos on reading the surf.

    Love seeing footage of the OBX any time ! I fished near Kitty Hawk last year and used a double drop rig. two hooks with a sinker. I had good success, caught whiting and sea trout. Looks like you guys are using just one hook with the sinker . Am I wasting time with the double ?

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  7 років тому

      Some of the guys like the double rig. It usually catches the smaller fish like the whiting but the drum seem to do better on the single hook. However, we caught a nice bull red on a 3 hook pompano rig last fall. You can see that video on my channel too.

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  10 років тому

      I'm pretty sure that it was caught on a chunk of bluefish, beyond the breakers, as far as you can cast. That rod had 17lb line with a 40lb leader.

      blue15047 Going to Outer Banks at the end of the month and plan on doing some Surf Casting ! I am looking to buy an in expensive setup Probably a 10 or 12 foot Ugly stick Bigwater and a Penn 8000 or Okuma 30 Spinning reel. What is your suggestion on rod length ? Will a 10 footer be ok or will a 12 footer make a big difference ?

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  10 років тому

      Doug, a 10' will be fine. They are easier to travel with. The big advantage that I like with the 12' is that you get better casting distance and the height helps keep the line above the waves when it's in the rod holder.

    • @rowch01
      @rowch01 10 років тому

      Thanks Bud ! It was a successful trip ! Got my 10 footer and did well with it ! With a 2 oz lure and a 2.5 oz bullet weight I was able to get my poppers about 40 yards into the surf with wind at my face ! Everything worked out great !

      +Mikkel Dyrhof We were using several different kinds. I like the 12 foot tall models. The Penn Torque surf rods are a nice rod for the money. My favorite is the Ocean Master Surf Rod but it's more expensive. Depends on your budget and how much you're gonna use it.

    What lures do u use for bluefish

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  9 років тому

      Bon Timit we were using "fish finder" rigs for most of this video. Bluefish have sharp teeth so use a spoon, bucktail, or hard bait for them. You can use plastic swim baits but they will only last a fish or two before they are torn up.

    wat size rod and reel do u recommend?

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  10 років тому

      I like surf rods at least 10ft long with a medium heavy action for throwing heavy weights and bait. I would want a reel that could hold at least 250 yards of whatever lb test line you want to use. My penn 650ss is my favorite spinning reel. 14-17lb test line is a good starting point.

    • @Chancho1507
      @Chancho1507 10 років тому +1

      Is it vital to have full 250 yards of line?

    • @blue15047
      @blue15047  10 років тому +1

      Chancho1507 Of coarse you don't have to have that much, but the only way you can get something in that weighs 50lbs+ on 17lb line, is to use the drag on your reel. Something like a shark or a huge drum can use every bit of 200 yards of line. If you hook something big, then you will be glad that you have that much line. You also have to account for the length of your line already off of the reel by the time you walk out in the surf, cast, then walk back to your rod holder.
