The Best Entry-Level Speedmaster, Speedmaster Racing: Better Than the Reduced?

  • Now no one is going to debate the Speedmaster, outside the submariner, is probably the most iconic watch of all time, a classification that certainly has been earned.
    And even if it not your style, there are plenty and I mean plenty, perhaps even to a fault, versions of the Speedmaster. ere are plenty and I mean plenty, perhaps even to a fault, versions of the Speedmaster. And when it comes to where many have their eyes set, the Speedmaster professional is obviously the choice, but for those with either limited funds or smaller wrists, the longtime favorite that is suggested frequently is the Speedmaster reduced. But in this video, we look at another entry-level Speedmaster model that I think is superior, the Speedmaster Racing.

    Teddy, thank you. If it wasn't for your video, this reference would not have even been on my radar. Now, it is on my wrist as I type this. @@zeddsquared7559 I have an approx 6.75" (172 mm) wrist, and it works very well for me. The lug-to-lug is not large and it wears smaller than its case diameter. The caveat is the heft - the case is thick, and has some weight. If you are the type of enthusiast who likes to feel a watch's presence, great. If not, the mass of this one, coupled with the "noisy" rotor may turn you off. I love it, but YMMV.

    Got this because of the 40mm size. The more I wear it the more I love it. 🤗 And added bonus is the dependable workhorse movement inside. Had some chronos that were real pain. Too delicate and required regular maintenance.
    This one is very accurate and can really stand up to daily wear.

    I own a speedy reduced, here are my thoughts:
    Pros:
    -Same iconic look of the pro
    -Affordable (relatively)
    -Automatic
    -Reliable
    -Hesalite (also available in sapphire, but I love the distortion of the original. Easy to buff out scratches as well)
    -8 beats a second, nice and smooth.
    -Says Omega Speedmaster on the dial (hell yeah)
    -Relatively thin for an auto chronograph in this price range
    Cons:
    -The bracelet. It’s too light, too narrow, pulls arm hairs, push pin link attachment, and the clasp leaves a lot to be desired. Still, it is comfortable, secure, and looks sharp.
    -The size. This is completely subjective, but if you are used to 40mm+ dive watches, it will take some getting used to.
    -Poor water resistance. (I know, it’s not a diver)
    -Scratches the speedy itch, but still makes me want a Pro. The biggest con, in my opinion.
    As for servicing, it is 600-700 US dollars if done by Omega. This includes a new crystal, new pushers, full overhaul of the movement, and polishing of the entire watch (if you want). I don’t think that is such a bad deal, but others will disagree. For what it’s worth, mine has not been serviced in nearly a decade and is still running great.

    • @rousseau327

    • @iLL1337
      @iLL1337 4 роки тому

    • @rousseau327
      @rousseau327 4 роки тому +1

      @@iLL1337 Well, the servicing cost of the Reduced seems a tad bit unreasonable for a watch that can be had for under $2k, especially, when you can find the Racing for right around $2500 these days. Good price for a better designed automatic chrono, especially compared to reduced prices.
      While you're particular Speedmaster Reduced has been running great, you can ignore all the ones that needed servicing. That's the one thing i've learned in owning watches.

    • @SharapovaFan
      @SharapovaFan 4 роки тому

      I too own the Speedy Reduced. Well, actually the Speedmaster Triple Date, but it's also part of the "reduced Speedy" line. For a Valjoux 7750-based movement, the accuracy is incredible. It's been several years (half a decade at least) since its last service and it's still only off by less than 5 seconds a day. My other Valjoux 7750 watches have better accuracy, but they're far newer. My Speedmaster Triple Date at least 20 years old now.

    • @rousseau327
      @rousseau327 4 роки тому

      @@SharapovaFan Valjoux movements are generally quite reliable and easy to service. The Speedmaster Reduced that have their design almost 1 to 1 with the moonwatch use an ETA movement with a chronograph module stacked on it. I think these are still quite reliable, but servicing often means they need to replace the whole thing

    Your review pushed me over the edge. I found this same watch, loved the dial and was able to track one down here in Europe. I have been wearing an older Tissot SeaStar. The Racing, even being a little thicker, wears a good bit smaller. The white/aluminum/platinum dial makes it look more like a dress watch, but cool. All the reviews I have seen, plus yours, really liked the movement. As you mentioned, it wears like a thinner watch. I don't notice any movement of the auto-winder. Great review Teddy. I looked at this watch last weekend. Really wanted to love it because it checks so many boxes for me. Excellent review. I bought this not for the price, but because at 40 mm it wears perfectly on my wrist. I did consider the Reduced, but both my watchmaker and the Omega AD (who I’ve known for years) both echo your view that the Racing is the better watch all round, especially the 3330 movement. Mine’s accurate to half a second a day (both by observation and on a timegrapher), incredibly comfortable and, being the black dialled variant, looks as good with a suit as it does with casual attire. Interesting video Teddy. I've been looking at Speedmaster Racing models recently but didn't realize there were so many, I guess it's like Seamasters. I'm particularly smitten with the 2 register Racing using the cal 9900 coax. I believe the Omega Ref is 329.30.44.51.01.002 but I could be wrong. They aren't as reasonably priced but still look like value for the money. The 9900 is METAS certified which ads a lot of value with a saphire caseback and, in addition to the usual chronograph feature, the watch can track a second (2nd) time zone on the 3 o'clock register by leaving the chrono running all the time.
    Thanks for shedding some light on the world of Speedmasters.

      Perfectly right. There was an article on Watchuseek as well as a few ones on Hodinkee debunking the entire mess that many people unfortunately still believe. I've swam in the sea (what's on with that "swimming pool" nonsense? Go swim in the sea, if possible!) with a Seiko 5 (both a 30m and a 50m rated model), a Vostok Komandirskie (2 atm rated) and also a diver, a G-Shock and a 10-bar chrono (OK, this one was in a pool for like 10 min). ALL of these were fine; the Vostok had water getting inside not because of a failure, but because I wanted to "wash the part where the crown screws in". Yes, people do stupid things at times.
      The overbearing over-caution of certain people is just annoying !

      Yup, the only real distinction I'd make is between 'water resistant 200m and 'divers 200m'. The former is the manufacturers recommendation, the latter means it actually adheres to ISO dive rating which requires so much more robust design than simply water resistance. Yet people seldom make the distinction.

    The main reasons I'm considering getting this piece are the thickness, the WR and the date complication. The 42mm moon watch is awesome and has great history, but I like my watches to be able to hide under a cuff, tell the date of the month (I know you can use your phone but I prefer it that way) and 100m of wr is welcome not only for swiming, but also to know that it is robust enough to withstand a shake or and active live style.

    Thanks for raising my awareness to this reference. Seems like there’s a lot of value here. Though I have to say I am partial to the 3539.50 (reduced v2) aesthetically speaking; It’s basically a baby moon watch which my 6.75 inch wrists appreciate. Have you checked out the reduced 2’s?

    I spent the better part of a year looking for a Reduced II before I stumbled on the Racing series. Like others have mentioned, there are very few reviews on these and it's shocking that they don't seem to get much love. After I saw the blue face version it was love at first sight and game over for the Reduced. This watch just blows it out of the water in every way. I've been wearing my blue Speedy Racing nearly every day since I got it, I'm absolutely enamored with it! I picked it up used for $2,200, which is less than most Reduced II's go for making it an absolute steal to boot.

    I see a speedy in my near future, and it will be a racing. I'm a bigger guy, so 40mm, seemed a bit small( my other watches are 42-45mm), but after trying on a speedy, it seems pretty perfect at 40. I'm looking at the gray face, rubber strap, with yellow accents. Sporty, but still elegant. Also attainable at about $3,500, on line. Great watch!

    Nice video Teddy. I have a small wrist and love the Speedy reduced. I bought one earlier this year, and it is my go to watch for casual occasions. It gives you the iconic design of the Soeedmaster in compact size: the Soeedmaster Racing doesn’t deliver on that iconic design - just my 2 cents.

      Exactly! And when you walk into an AD try putting it on someone else's wrist and look at it from a 3rd party perspective it's really nice.
      The thickness isn't an issue at all as the case is divided into 3 segments and the rear part sits into the wrist, so all u see is the main housing and the bezel.
      The dome shape of the crystal and the bezel go very well together as well... when angled it looks really really lovely.

    Nice watch Teddy and I agree nicer than a reduced, I also have an issue with date complications. I dislike the thickness of automatic chronographs which is why I prefer a manual wind, so I like the professional with the sapphire crystal. Come to think of it the broad arrow ones are nice too.
    A friend has the Mk11 racing dial which I lusted after as I too loved the orange details. However after seeing it in the flesh I wasn’t struck on the case. Hey there are a lot of speedy models out there, so l’m sure there is 1 for everyone! 😁

    ETA 7753 with hidden date pusher is a cool way to rotate the 6-9-12 sub-dials of the 7750 to the preferred 3-6-9 layout; it opens the top half of the dial to Omega's logo. Prices are a little higher than the 3511.50 reverse panda Speedy I used to own, but worth it.

    You make a strong case here for the Speedmaster Racing. Personally I'm partial to the 3513.33 which, as best I can tell, fit somewhere between the reduced and racing line both in sophistication and in price. Yes, it boasts "only" the Valjoux 7750 caliber, but the dial is sportier, the case is 1 mm smaller, and the price point is still very competitive!

    Teddy -
    First, your videos have been incredibly and informative as I curate my personal watch collection. You're insights were the drivers on my purchases multiple models including the Hamilton Khaki Field and the Tissot PRX.
    I'm now in a position to buy first entry level "luxury" time piece. I am debating between the Tudor Black Bay, Omega Speedmaster Racing (the reduced in principle), or the Breitling Chronomat 40. I wish I could pick your brain - I'm leaning towards the Black Bay personally. Seems like the best bang for the buck and provides a lot of versatility but I certainly am no expert. Still thinking of what the "right" decision is but I'm hopeful I make it!
    Note: I see this purchase being my 3 - 6 year watch. Ideally, I'd like to expand my collection with a true Omega Moonwatch when finances permit hence my hesitation on jumping into the Speedmaster Racing model.

    Good video review of that watch but I still prefer my Speedy reduced ref.3539.50.00 as it looks nearly identical to the moonwatch. I have the Seamster GMT 2534.50.00 which I've had new since 2004 that I alternate with the reduced. I would love to get the moonwatch but having an automatic watch that has better water resistance than the moonwatch at a fraction of the price and not have to wind it made me go with the reduced. Keep up the great work as we love your reviews.

    This is a model I keep going back to. A few years ago I had a choice between a Speedmaster Racing and the Tudor 41 I ended up buying. I never really connected to the Tudor and ended up selling it after a year and buying a Monta Noble (that I am still in love with 2-years later). I regret not picking up the Speedmaster and I decided to start saving again because this will be my next watch. Too bad it is discontinued but there is some good grey market pricing on new watches.
    Now I just have to decide on the color.
