What do I do about leg spasms...well, pretty much nothing, but I do stretch out a lot. I heard stretching done at home will save more time for PT so they can do other things. Oh, I do take a baby amount of Flexeril. They spasm when I need to go to the bathroom (I don't have any tubes...yet) and they keep muscle tone (or so I was told). The only thing I don't like is I have a nonunion fracture and the adductor muscle gets super tight and spasms then. Those are super painful and trigger autonomic dysreflexia (AD) issues big time.
Since you have a minot C5 injury as well, do you have issues with AD?
By the way, I love tacos too. Is that the Tazmanian Devil sitting up on your shelf?
I can't seem to forget the Botox-Botchulism connection and I realize the Botox shots are not Botchulism...but how can I be sure I'm not building my system up with poison? It's kind of like Mercury fillings. Well, they say it's just 'x' amount for a small filling and that's within safe levels...but a ton of fillings or large fillings will sure make that 'safe' amount unsafe. I think it's the same thing with Botox. I just can't get myself beyond that...especially when reading articles like this: my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/8312-botulinum-toxin-injections.

When you first tried Botox, did you have a hard time getting the right muscles and the right amount per muscle? My insurance covered 400 units and they did 50 units in eight different muscles the first time I tried. Unfortunately It didn’t work. The second time they did 75 units on 5 muscles and it still didn’t work. My spasms are pretty strong so, maybe 100 in 4 muscles which would be unfortunate because it wouldn’t give me a lot to work with.

My PMR doctor had tested my spasms to know exactly which muscles were the problem, so when it came time to do the injections, the botox got to the right muscles.

I am hoping to see the benefits of Botox or dysport, which I read works faster and lasts longer? so if you have any feedback on that please share, I need to get my walking improved so I can get back to work, so I'm hoping this really helps me. so also I am hoping that they will inject the right muscles and correct dosage as well so it does help, being im going on 9 years with this severe spasticity which affects my walking and limits my upper extremity.

Hopefully It’s not $18,000 cause I honestly don’t see my insurance covering that. I could definitely use something like this because the spasms when I’m trying to sleep are awful. Even If It doesn’t get rid of them 100%…75% would be great.

No leg spasms at all just severe spasticity aka hyper tone.

In your video you mentioned that it was $6000 a shot. Since you got three shots is that $18.000 or is it only $6000 per treatment every three months?

sorry to clarify, its per treatment every 3 months and all insurance companies cover it from what I understand.

You mention in your video that Botox isn’t a magic bullet. Does it help reduce the kicking spasms? My PT Dr just told me he wants to try Phenol Injections instead of Botox. It’s a lot cheaper and lasts longer. Have you heard anything about that. I haven’t had any injections yet and I’m a little nervous. Just wondering.

I really don't know anything about Phenol Injections. But I'm sure, like most medications, some medications work better for better for some people while not as good for others. I'm not a doctor (although I did take CPR training), so my best advice would be to get 2 opinions from 2 different doctors who specialize in spinal cord injuries and physical medicine rehabilitation (PMR). Be sure to provide them with your complete medical history as it pertains to your injury and allergies.

No worries, I’m not asking for medical advice. Just wondering if Botox is effective in reducing the leg spasms. At times I have trouble sleeping because of the kicking and if it was to reduce my spasms even by 50% that would be good.

@@eamon5543 Well for me, my doctor talked to me about a couple options but we went with botox and it reduced the severity of my spasms by about 70% and it reduced the frequency by about 50%. So even though I still have spasms, they are not strong enough to cause me issues anymore.

I’m having this done tomorrow and I’m freaking out. Does this hurt?

I didn't feel a thing. Do you have feeling in your legs? I don't really have much. Also the needle is super thin which means it's harder to feel it.

Just curious...did you know a side effect of Botox is paralysis? Yeah, my doctor and I discussed it with regards to a supra pubic catheter.

I don't believe that is quite accurate no side effects means just that I don't think anybody would be trying this if that were the case.

I agree, that seems inaccurate if that was the case I don't believe patients would be getting these.
