*Jesus Christ, what a recording. I had no idea such video existed. So much talent and history on one freaking stage it boggles the mind. Thank you to whoever is responsible for getting this here.*
I'm with you one hundred percent. Started watching and couldn't stop. Really great quality to say the least.
@@jeromeprice7008 Right on, man.
Such artistry, such talent, all gone now, such will never come this way again.
Man, when giants walked the earth. What a opening lineup to kick things off with -JOS, Kenny Burrell, and dream horn front line of Clark Terry, Art Farmer, the homeboy James Moody, & flying home from the swing era & beyond: Mr. Illinois Jacquet. Cannon ball & his always underrated brother Nat delivering & exploring their jazz funk into the early 70s with help from the next generation of groove in the form of young George Duke.
Y E S
Jimmy Smith, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Mingus - all that soul and beauty. Nothing like it! 💙
And Brubeck! That guy changed Jazz!
Wow. What a thrill. Listening pleasure on another stratosphere! Nov 2020 Im soaking this all in. THANK U
Man, that Hammond/Leslie combo during Jimmy Smith's portion sounds ultra gritty. Love it !! 😎
Wow what a video. What a treat it would have been to have jazz festivals like this.
Kenny and Jimmy have an awesome sound together.
The Cannonball, pacesetting and forever jovial. His work with Miles in general, and Kind of Blue specifically, will always be remembered as his defining best. Seeing him out front here, and performing his "al(to)chemy" is almost otherworldly, after listening to his music for more than fifty years. The visual freezes time, and adds another perspective to the man, the musician, the brother. Thanks for sharing his greatness with the world. May he rest in peace.👑 🎸🎵🎷
"al(to)chemy" - got me so good dood. Transferring the philosophers stone with music as the medium. Peace, love and understanding. Shine on.
The Coronavirus (April, 2020) make me replay this great jazz show! Wow! I didn't waste my time again! 👏👏👏👏👏 👍🏼
I love kenny burrell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kenny Burrell is my man!
I love jazz, especially jazz guitar.
I am in heaven watching this best of the best.
Jesus... Gerry's solo on "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" here is one of the best solos I've ever heard. Holy crap
Man I wondered if anyone else heard that. Never heard him go that way. Extraordinary.
Mr. Bassman was feelin cannonballs solo. But man, I so wish he was out there longer. Hands down the best!!
Awesome bit of history. Love to see the legends. My first time seeing George Duke getting it on with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. The Rhodes is a great instrument in his hands!!
DeAngelo Starnes Agreed! He tore up that solo, and had a wah pedal on it too. George Duke, great guy too. And Jimmy Smith in total command of the B3! 🏆
I feel lucky to have found this. Such great sound quality & video quality. Legends of music at their best, live.
This is the first time I've seen these legends in 1971 clothes and hairstyles. I'll dress like Walter Booker at the next jam session I go to. Also, I never knew Dave Brubeck inherited Spike Jones' plaid trousers.
While most people play the bass like they’re trying to hold it up and prevent it from crushing them, Mingus always looked like he was a giant come to rest his arms on the upright and the fingers moved automatically. What a solid pair of hands
I was struck by that also. The bass seemed almost small in his embrace.
Magic to my ears. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this!!!!!! Thank you
Cat Anderson wailing on that trumpet tossing in a line of “Shine on harvest Moon” in Perdido. Did I hear that right? Played with the Duke and it shows. Lost both his parents at 4 years old and learned to play trumpet in an orphanage.
Oh Wow ! ...thats incredible ! Amazing music from the heart ...not a computer😄Jazz is MY religion 🎼
Thanks! All of the musicians are wonderful!
MERCI POUR CETTE VIDEO HISTORIQUE ET ONTOLOGIQUE. DESMOND A TOUJOURS JOUÉ D'UNE MANIÈRE SOPHISTIQUÉ ET LYRIQUE... MULLIGAN TOUJOURS MAGNIFIQUE !!! VIVE TOUS LES MUSICIENS ET LA VIE!!!
SPLEDED... ALL THAT JAZZ ... REMAINING THE BEST EXPRESSION OF NOWDAYS RICHIEST MUSIC.
Great, good listening. All of these greats together. OMG. 10/3/2019
It's rare that I hear Jimmy Smith playing with such a crunchy tone as we hear in this clip. Overdriven and aggressive, and I think it suits the piece really well.
What a treasure! So very few from these recordings are still with us. Great to hear and see these masters on live footage.
Man , what a line up , can’t get better than this wooooooooos indeed
My god, George Duke has some serious groove going on here!
Espetacular !!!! Thanks !!!!!
The very best musicians at that time. What a beautiful concert. Love it.
See the man inside - not outside - they are always different !!!
I wish ol' Pete (my dear Father) were still alive for many reasons. But I know he would've seriously dug this- he'd have thought he'd hit the motherlode with the availability of UA-cam videos such as this !!
He saw many jazz greats in his day at the old Red Hill Inn- Pennsauken, NJ. Many years later, (late 80s ?) we went to see Dave Brubeck at Glassboro State College (Glassboro, NJ).
He'd learned about the show earlier that day, got home & asked me if I was interested. Sure... (I was into "progressive" rock- King Crimson, Yes, EL&P, Genesis. I always enjoyed rock with some jazz leanings & versa/vice-a. Musicianship & songwriting abilities above all else; so I am surely game for this....) we get there only to discover that it is a fundraising event. Tuxes & gowns permeate the place. Not good for us- he's a propane truck driver & serviceman. Still in his work duds, me in jeans & my Bernie Parent hockey jersey, right ?
They had a heart. Dispite it being sold out & our not being dressed ? There were 2 cancelled tickets awaiting new customers like us. Thank you, God ! Because it was a night neither one of us would ever forget....
Ol' Mr. Brubeck had HIS SON performing on both upright & electric basses that night. By the second song, my Pops is requesting Take Five & Blue Rondo à la Turk, as we're only in, like, the 6th or 7th row. Not loudly, mind you. But subtle ,"5 !!"s !! & "Turk !!"s after applauses wound down. Blue Rondo à la Turk was covered by The Nice. (another "prog" band lead by Keith Emerson, albeit in 4/4 time versus the original 5/4 by the Brubeck Quartet).
Again we were rewarded as they'd played them both before the night was over.
On the way home, I remember Dad saying more than once, "the only thing that could have made this night better would've been Paul Desmond."
That night was one of those things that were great because you knew how great the night actually was, as we were doing it & that we would both have that endearing memory for the remainder of our days on Earth.
If one is able to revisit life's experiences after having expired, in Heaven; this night is truly a given- to be able to do it again.
And we'd actually thought at one point that we'd might have driven, one way, 45 minutes for nothing, once we'd seen all those tuxedos & gowns filing into the building. Good, no- GREAT THING- we pressed on like we did !! Love you, Dad !! If some of what I said earlier is true, (about revisiting life's treasured moments in the afterlife...) then surely ol' Pete is at a Count or Duke show at the Red Hill Inn- right about now....😇
I can't stop coming back for that hammond intro. Oh lawd
The resolution and color is superb. It's like I'm there in '71. Can't thank World of Jazz enough!
amazing … fantastic, magical jazz moments
OMG, amazing this material. Thanks for sharing.
Mingus had some serious Ellington leanings. Nice to watch him play. Thanks
Wow some early George Duke!
I was born in the day. Plus or minus a few hours! What a welcome party.
Many thanks for tis sharing...Wow
27:45 Desmond Classic beautiful lick and In a blues.
All the amazing players ive ever heard. Flashy bluesy super out there highly skilled virtuoso whatever. At 35yrs old I’m just now realizing how much more pleasing it is to hear Desmond play than most anyone out there
Besides cannonball
Wow, so cool to see Cannonball in color at this stage. Also Duke was killing it. What a great video this is...
I heard theirs a jimmie and a Santana out somewhere?
Steller proformance, thank you!
Totally awesome concert with our many keyboard mentors and virtuoso influencers! Thanks for posting!
Mingus band is Joe Gardner-trumpet, Hamiet Bluiett-baritone sax, John Foster-piano, Roy Brooks-drums, Cat Anderson-trumpet sits in on first tune Perdido by Duke Ellington.
Never heard of the piano player, but knew who the bari player was
I love this❤🙏
Jimmy, Kenny, Art and, and... a jazz- blues-soul-funk-festival!
Thank you
Incredible overall erpformance. Dave brubeck just brilliant!!
Super cool! Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Thanks for sharing all this magnificent jazz. I just want to clarify a few things as a Cannonball Adderley historian. Cannonball was playing at the York Club in Los Angeles for a three week stent from 29-10-1971 through 13-11-1971. I think the recording is actually from October 27, 1972 during the "Newport Jazz Festival in Europe" tour. This concert was in Rotterdam as you correctly state. I have all the audio recordings and an additional video of the band playing Straight No Chaser from the original NPS broadcast. When I first got these recordings I was told the date was October 18, 1972, but Cannonball was in Warsaw Poland and I have all the recordings from that concert and none of these match.
Here is the list of all the tunes the Quintet played at the Rotterdam performance(s). It isn't clear if they are two sets from a single concert or two different concerts. The stage is set up identically on the Straight No Chaser video as in your videos, suggesting the same concert with an intermission:
1. The Black Messiah (15:35)
2. Hummin' (11:44)
3. Walk Tall/The Scene (5:14)
Intermission?
4. The Brakes (12:21)
5. Straight, No Chaser (4:13)
6. The Blooz/Oh Babe (6:58)
No matter what the facts are, I really appreciate seeing these and all the other material. Thanks again. Doc Stewart
Thanks for your comments! We really appreciate it
@@WorldofJazz do you have footage of the band at the berlin jazz footage? 1972
Also, George Duke didn't join Cannonball's band until 1972.@@WorldofJazz
@@ChristianMcBrideTV George Duke was playing with Cannonball by 1970. He spent a couple of years with him then returned to Frank Zappa and The Mothers in 1972.

Yep the drums say Rotterdam on them.. possibly from hire company.
un très grand merci de partager cela : c'est juste génial ! une belle brochette de super pro du swing. merci merci :)
Thanks so much for this. I'm at 13mins a and George Duke just killed it, slipping in some sideways Freedom Jazz Dance quotes into his knockout solo, everyone sounds great, and haven't even got to Mulligan, and those Cats. Man, this promises greatness, and many repeat listening to's.
One of the first Jazz albums I bought as a teen was with this setting of the Cannonball Adderly Quintet. Loved it. Was also surprised that this was George Duke before he joined Frank Zappa, since I was also a Zappa fan.
Many thanks for posting this great video. As they say here in Ireland " happy as a pig in s** t.
I love this! such a collection of heros. hearing paul desmond on live recordings i always hear little echos of sidney bechet in his playing.
o.k., hear Desmond and Bechet, you are on the wrong website..........
I can vouche for hearing from chos of Sidney bachet from desmonds playing.
Man that stuff Cannonball was playing is truly amazing, just playing what he's feels just like someone would be singing total control of his ax! No licks just pure inspirationn!
Awesome! Thanks for this concert.
Jazz moves my Soul ! Great Appreciation Here !!!
The underrated giant - Walter Booker killing it on the bass and sporting the coolest hafro on the planet!
Super hi quality video.
Thank you to whoever posted this. Amazing.
You’re welcome
Too Fine! Thanks.
Brubeck/Desmond on "Some Day",amazing!!
As much a pleasure to watch as to hear!
Right you are. This was so great to watch.
Amazing players!!!
Wow. Thank goodness someone had the foresight to videotape this concert. So many legends.
This is a multi camera production with super well time edits between cameras. This is no low budget whip-out the camera. I feel it was likely filmed on 16mm. Looks to good to be color video from the time.
@@fez3327 I'm pretty sure this is video, as evidenced by the highlights on the brass instruments and the magenta/green edge effects. But it is excellent quality video for 1971, and I'm SO glad somebody recorded this with such care.
From a time when Gods walked the earth!
Thank you for sharing this. Wow!
Never heard Roy Haynes and Jimmy smith together! Incredible
Wonderful.
still love it!!
Brubeck ,Things Ain't What They Used To Be
Key of C concert
Eb Baritone sax and Eb Alto sax in Key of A
The origins of SoulJazz , just when Blue Note was taking a nap of 15 years , Extraordinary performance by all of them without .Cannonball , there will not exist Sanborn , Grover or Breckwr in the 80 's
Grover listen to Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, Cannoball, ,he played mainstream as well as smooth jazz, the comments on this forum are jacked up.
Fantastic.
Simply WOW
Love Jimmy Smith!
And The Great Roy Hayes On Drums Oh Yeah This is the Real Shit
经典的演出 !!Cannonball Adderley 乐队的黑 和 Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond 的白 形成鲜明对比,各有千秋真是太棒了👏🌟👏🌟!
What a sensational George Duke.. !!
OOh so glad I found this! Nobody "swings" like this, leave it to the oldies!
Yep, seeing Paul Desmond live makes me want to get the horn out!!
Paul Desmond is something else.
Ughhhh so good. Suit was also awesome. So stylish.
Thank you so MUCH for this video . Hi from belgium
I really like Nat’s solo!!❤
GOLD!
Fabulous. America's greatest contribution to world civilization.
other than Looney tunes cartoons and superhero comics.. just kidding. but those were some good cartoons and comix.
Damn, Jimmy Smith (my jazz idol) could really make that Hammond B-3 bounce, couldn’t he???
Looks like a C-3
Tee Dee The iconic Hammond B3 organist is not shown:-/ I wonder what happened
@@Gurt_Bearded_Hobo That's because it is. :)
Actually its an A series Hammond.
@@Gurt_Bearded_Hobo
I've read (do not pretend to know about this at all, just bein' honest) that essentially, the C model defers to the B model primarily due to the current output/input. As in, the B model was for North American 110 voltage & the C model is for Euro voltage. But if you are able to identify differences by sight, this assertion of mine must not be true.
Can you enlighten me somewhat ? I mean in layman's terms, don't knock yourself out. But, are there key things you focus on in identifying a C from a B model Hammond ?
I just love Lawrence Hammond's creation altogether. One of the best sounds ever when coupled with a Leslie. And to think: Mr. Hammond knew nothing of music itself. He was a manufacturer of clocks, primarily. When that market saw saturation, he saw possibilities in what turned out to be the tone wheel. Consulting with engineers with musical backrounds- he found that he was correct. Amazing.
The keyboard playing from 11:30 is insane!
It’s absolute perfection. Really enjoyed watching each one of them having a good time during their solo performance. Thanks for the upload!
Esse é o melhor vídeo de todo o UA-cam!
Wonderful rhythms and traditional/contemporary instrumentation. Love the funky organ sounds. The production is clean and unobtrusive, allowing the grooves and melodies to shine through. I am also impressed with the natural sounds of the percussion effects. As a musician, composer and orchestra leader (currently conducting a classical chamber orchestra) who has worked in a number of genres with producers such as Daniel Lanois and musicians like the late Billy Preston, I appreciated the quality of what you are presenting. Congratulations!
Mingus sextet line up: John Foster piano, Cat Anderson, Joe Gardner trumpets, Hamiet Bluiett, baritone sax, Roy Brooks, drums.
Great !!!
Woooow....... Buénisimos...!
Simply timeless and incredible. Thank you WoJ and UA-cam.
