- Adam welcomes director and animator Julian Curi to the cave! We're fans of Julian's lovely short films and puppet style, and get to learn about his design and animation processes with prototypes and puppet samples he's brought along with him. To illustrate how he makes and animates his puppets, Adam and Julian collaborate on two new figures putting Adam and his dog Maggie into an animated scene.

RAD!
i LOVED gruff!!
How did you comment before the video became public??? epik
That opening reaction!
I've seen him get less excited about explosions and myths he's busted!
Something so short and quiet having THAT much power is truly magical!
Adam appreciates the effort that is a gift to him for sure. If that makes sense?
AAAAH MY TWO FAVORITE MAKERS IN A COLLAB I LOVE IT
and you are one of the first to see it :D
I love it how lately I've felt the exact same way about so many videos here on Tested. So many creators I love being showcased in the best possible way.
Love that you guys love our work with other creators - stay tuned for more!

PSA: Gruff is an incredible short, but Julian also turned the in-universe tv show into it’s own little short film, “Bonita & the Bandit” and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet (after you’ve seen Gruff of course)!
I like to think there’s no greater expression of love than to see what someone notices about you in the smallest details they express.
The weathering on the jeans, especially around the iPhone pocket is absolutely chef's kiss.
Right????

Adam’s obsession with puppets is providing us with TOP tier content!
Don’t forget the hammer! 😂
I would love to see a Tested series like this, where Adam spends an episode with a maker learning their craft, and maybe a follow up episode where Adam takes what he learns and creates something based around what he was taught.
Does anyone else just catch themselves unknowingly sitting there with a massive grin on when watching these type of "Adam hangs out with another maker" videos?
Especially at all the little “ooohhhh” and “ahh” moments.
I love that they're sort of teaching each other.
Like Adam's Process of solving some problems, by thinking what if he was in someone else's time.
And Julian's processess of making his own puppets.
This is what being with other makers is.
I watched Julian's shorts forever and marveled at his creative techniques. What I wasn't prepared for was the emotional impact the finished film would have. What a treat to se the collaboration between he and Adam. Thanks for allowing us to see the whole process!
Edited to add: I also hope that he gets to work on something big. He is very talented!
I followed Julian/RighteousRobot as Gruff come together scene by scene. I squealed in excitement when the release date was announced. Now he's collaborating with Adam Savage and showing us the process! You bet I'm eating every bit you serve!!
I also love Adam's enthusiasm for different forms of art. The way he peered intently at the joints and guessed at what they might be, the way he grabbed and talked about the beauty of the hammer (very arts and crafts movement), the way he jumped aside and suggested the use of armature wire, the way his face lit up as he watched the film! His excitement is infectious, and you can clearly see he's THE Crafts Guy.
P.S. Loved the Totoro cosplay making video, the cosplay wig video, the bird puppet and Jim Henson style puppet videos too!
P.P.S. The テステド logo😆 love it. The fact that it's written テステド instead of テステッド(how it would normally be written), looks like a new abbreviation and looks more symmetrical as a logo. Do you ship to Japan?
Absolutely LOVE watching 2 makers collaborating on something they love doing. A little nerve-wracking when you’re in someone else’s space, one in someone else’s ’cave’; one in someone else’s medium. It is just a pleasure to observe. ❤️
I'm not sure I could be prouder in this life if I were ever to receive praise from Adam Savage.
Beautiful work, Julian!
Love this. Especially Adam's responses to seeing his pup being made into a puppet.
So glad to see Julian getting that recognition he definitely deserves!
That was absolutely incredible! Thanks to Julian, Mrs Julian, and Adam for such an amazing end product!
This has to be my favorite of all the encounters between people whose work I love, here at tested! Gruff is such a wonderful short film! Can't wait to see where Julian's work goes from here.
Wow that was incredibly special.
Right?!

How marvelous. I am now following Julian's Channel and watched GRUFF. Thank you again for ALL your collaborations 💙🌻💙
FABULOUS!🎉

Adam chaotically rummages @5:36
I have been feeling thet last few years, film and animation been all about the money. I understand things need to produce, but man... just no heart or soul. Then I saw the making of Gruff on TIktok. I hope this man gets all he ever dreamed of and more. This is just magical and reminder why we make art.
His work is incredible, Gruff was so good
Julian’s work is so mesmerizing. After just a few seconds I’m totally drawn into the story and stop thinking about the technique.
I hope Julian sees/feels all the love in these comments - well deserved, bravo!
It was really interesting watching all the engineering that was needed for these puppets. If you haven’t watch Gruff, or the BTS process stuff, it’s phenomenal
Wow! Ive been following this project for some time on Instagram. What a delight to see him get platformed in this way. Way to go Tested team! Fantastic
thats just amazing, the fact 2 simple puppets can portray the real life love Adam has for Maggie and vice versa is astonishing, and beautiful.
Its unbelievable how much emotion he achieves from pieces of paper. Stunning work!
This is one of the best guest collaborations that I've seen on your channel. Julian's work is beautiful and inspiring.
I haven’t seen Adam get so excited for a long time ;)
I love Julian’s style so much. It feels so new with the curving of the paper and the depth of the layers. I always associated paper animation with the flatness of South Park, and never realised it could have such dimensionality. And I only say ‘animation’ because I never realised paper puppetry could be a thing.
Amazing work. Love Gruff, and I’m excited to see what Julian does next.
This was an amazing episode, so great seeing the incredible craftswork and the attention to detail. I didn't even pick up half of the small things like the pencil and the ring but it would've not looked right without them. It was perfect. A new fan of Julian!
My good boy Buddy had to be put down today because his health deteriorated, and then this comes along and made me cry so much. Super impressive work and great execution Julian (and wife).
Oh no, we are so sorry for your loss.

This is such a WONDERFUL conversation. I adore the mutual respect and admiration as well as the mutual exchanging of ideas and wisdom. You can tell how much this meeting has meant to both of you and it's wonderful to see. Julian is an extraordinary talent.
I love how happy and excited Adam got watching the behind the scenes!
This is such beautiful work! Props to Adam, Julian & Julian's wife for crafting and animating this wonderful art.
I think I smiled the entire time watching this. The creative energy on display was rejuvenating! Thank you both!
Two masters combining their skills to produce something indistinguishable from magic. And we were allowed to watch it.
I love Adam freaking out about the paper clips 😂 I feel you man. I have the same attitude finding cool tools or fasteners I didn’t know about before. Endless new possibilities 😅🎉
How sweet the final product turned out! I hope you get to have the puppets framed in a shadow box as a commemorative gift. If not now, then in the future.
Just hopped over and watched Gruff--this guys talent, artistry, and storytelling is fantastic!!
This is one of my favorite videos I’ve seen on here in a while and that’s saying a whole lot. The talent and patience to make such beautiful characters and films is refreshing. ❤
I immeidately recognized the puppet style. Julian has a specific look and I've seen it tons on a Facebook Stop Motion page I follow.
I just went and watched "Gruff." It's really well done. I had to stop the film for a minute and walk away because it was breaking me up emotionally, which doesn't happen that often when I'm watching a movie or a tv show. I was surprised he was able to get that emotion using paper puppets.
Speaking of puppets, that new Disney documentary on Jim Henson is really good. Worth checking out. I wish that guy was still around. He and Adam would have had gotten along great. I'm sure Brian Henson would say the same thing.
Definitely embodies Adam's video ethos of "Not how to but what happens"
Absolutely neatly!!! You two both posted at the same time and i watched both hehe ^^
The attention to detail is amazing, a unique art form that deserves a feature length feature to expand into.
Right??!!!
I have been waiting for this collab for too long! Fantastic!
You'll probably love Joel Haver's "Hello My Beautiful Creatures". It's another example of wearing the making of the film on it's sleeve. It's even more in-your-face, you can see the hot-glue spots change between frames. But, just like Gruff, even with that, it falls away to the drama depicted.
This video was so wholesome, so utterly delightful. I have happy tears in my eyes. Thank you.
Thank you Adam for putting others in the spotlight. I didn't know Julian but I will be following him from now on. Your sheer enthousiasm about making stuff together and then watching the end result was priceless. As you said, shared interests are such a good startingpoint for lovely collabs. Can't wait to see who you will invite next!
I was hoping that Julian would get some more coverage, been watching the creation of Gruff for ages and respect the peeks behind the curtain he gave during production.
JEEZ THIS IS LIKE A DRINK FROM THE FIREHOSE OF BRILLIANCE! I love how concise Julian was in describing his techniques and methods. And then showing the progress from beginning to end… WOW!!!
Nice to see Julian getting more recognition
This is amazing and he seems really talented. Love watching Adam have so much fun!
Great episode! Year’s ago,I had my art students doing cutout animation. I still have all the characters that they created using tagboard, fishing line and anything else that they needed. This segment exemplifies the creative Spirit that I hope the next generation will embrace. Bravo!
It would be cool to see a quick segment with paper Adam working with paper tools, in a paper workshop. it would be an awesome intro or outro for segments on tested
What a warm and charming collaboration! You two work beautifully together - so easy and unprepossessing.
Julian's work is nothing short of stunning and it seems so totally up Adam's alley that this collab was basically inevitable. That being said, I'm very glad to see it.
Y'all should collaborate with more indie filmmakers like this
How awesome to work on a project with Adam Savage!
Also I loved the short, Gruff!!
I immediately recognized Julian's work. Gruff was so good, I had to watch it multiple times to see all the minute details he got in there. I also wanted to let Adam know that the scrapbook section at craft stores has tons of mini brads, hinges, etc.
Love this art style. This has made Life with Loopy from Kablam on Nickelodeon pop into my head.
I thought I recognised his animation style!
Love it!
(figured to stack my comments as I watch, lol)
7:05 > Adam getting fascinated and admiring those **teeny tiny** brass joints is so adorable.
It is like seeing a Gorilla looking at a catipillar as he carefully manipulates the small container.
It is a joy seeing a tinkerer look at bits and pieces. You can see the years of experience and passion just bubbling over in but a mere moment.
Incredible.
i can't get enough of artists popping off my intagram feed into Adam's cave for geekery like this! this is amazing
Love the collaboration. Always fun watching the creative process.
I love Gruff! I'm so excited for you two to come together!!!
Simply amazing content. Two talented and facile minds. Two consumate makers. I could watch this type of chemistry go on for about a year. Thank you so much.
Calling it now. This guy's going to become the next Aardman.
_Charming_ . That is a huge compliment, here's why: I've seen enough of Disney's classic animated features, their classic rides at Disneyland, etc. And they all have a signature "Disneyesque" feel; there is a charming quality about them.
That's a unique gift, I hope can reach a world which is sadly lacking in charm.
this entire video is so wholesome and I love it
I see the short film a few days ago and I love it. The textures are amazing, they looks like colored pencils.
Beautiful craftmanship!
Love from Norway
Question - will adam savage be voicing "adam savage" in the up and coming hit short film 'adam savage', or will be voiced by Tom Cruise?
This might be one of my favourite episodes.
This was an amazing collab! Gruff is beautifully written and animated
This just might be one of my favorite videos!
Wow I really love this. I seems so doable, until you see the behind the scenes. Great work.
One more brain to add to my favorites. Julian is wonderful!
He is amazing! Love his work! So happy for this right now🎉
Whoa my two favorite creators are doing a project together. ❤. Adam is still acting like a child who gets a kick out of the creating process ❤. Julian should have mentioned the bucket head to get more 3d view of the character
Cool!
@tested that is the most amazing Build/Colab I've ever seen! #twoartists #amazing #stunning #awesome
Serious, undeniable "Wow!"
Julian Curi is an incredible artist. His work is mind blowing.
If I had followed my path to wanting to be a filmmaker, I'd hire his services for a title sequence then fade into a live action shot. Great stuff!
30.41 and we get the perfect Shaggy impersonation EVER! More Shaggy than everyone except the late great OG himself (I am not worthy to type his name).
Wow, I didn't expect that! I like these animations!
That was amazing to watch the process! And the behind the scenes! OMG!!! Thank you for this collaboration
The best kind of maker video, the ones that make you want to try some of the techniques yourself.
I really appreciate stop motion animation and find it very underrated it is such a long process mad god is probably one of the most disturbing stop motion movies ever but it really is impressive and beautiful in a dark way it took 30 years to make
absolutely fantastic
It could have been done completely digitally like South Park with just a paper aesthetics. But it is amazing that it's only CG as support. It is definitely its own thing.
I really would love to see his style in a feature film, it would be so beautiful
Just . . . "WOW"!!
This is incredible.
Gruff is REALLY good. Obviously the style of the film is unique but it's also just a really good story and expertly told
Will always tune in for puppet content
Excellent taste!
