I drop the guide pin in the first hole to rest it against the reference edge and it’s pretty secure. Drill, then drop the pin into the hole and go about drilling the rest. Sometimes I don’t even have to clamp it as hand pressure is enough. I have the machined aluminum kit and really like it.
I bought the old style jessem master kit to build a craftsman style door out of quartersawn white oak; jig was so user friendly l watched two short you tube videos and built the door without a hitch l can only imagine the new jig is even better.
The self-centering jig you said was around a 1/16" off centre is adjustable. I use one of those myself. There's a threaded locking collar which allows micro-adjustment to make sure the guide block is exactly centred when the jaws are clamped. But I'm sure you would know that.
I’ve been using it for a few months now and I love it. I’ve made a coffee bar and a few coffee tables with it flawlessly. I use a 6 in face clamp for clamping the jig to the piece, makes it a lot quicker
Where can I get those clamps your using...like how quick they clamp down...instead of screw. Thanks you for your time in making video greatly appreciated.
Excellent video. For the price(current sale) at $130, it’s a bargain for all 3 Sizes. One viewer mentioned on the JessEm you tube that the dowel bushings were not aligned 90 degrees with the angle plate. I did a check using a Woodpeckers 4” square and took measurements on each main plate on various locations with the angle plate. I detected no light emanating between the square and main plates. Definitely square. I called JessEm customer service and mentioned my concern on the jig’s squareness. The agent responded that they would replace the angle plate if it was misaligned. Didn’t have to. I’m enjoying using the jig on my projects.
@@fastindy Another customer commented that his angle was not square. After reading that I contacted JessEm CS to inquire about this. They indicated that they would replace the angle if not square. So I went ahead and verified my angle’s squareness and it was. I then conveyed this to CS and everything was cool. No issue.
Jessem is a great dowel jig but hardly new. I have had mine for several years. My set i chose only came with 1 size dowel but i bought the 1/2 fitting several years later. It fit the older jig perfectly with no slop, play or alignment issues. Well machined.
This “style” of Jessem jig has been around for quite a while but this one I have is the new version. Check out their website for the specs. Really great jig. 🍻
For shelves, you would be better off using a shelving jig. That way All your holes are correctly aligned. Also, if you are looking to make thicker shelves, for strength, it would be better to use dados to hold the shelves. If you still want to insert pegs, just mark a line, centered on the dado and drill from the outside, no jig required.
Just bought one and the only problem was the thing is slicker than whale snot. It must be a coating they use when stamping and bending the parts. I cleaned it with naphtha and scuffed the clamping surface with 120 grit sand paper. It doesn't move around any more like it did when drilling while clamped.
I'm milling northern calif black walnut from my yard. It's been drying for 5 years, milled it one year ago. 3" thick and 6 ft long. 20" +/- wide, depending... I am Now going to make my first fireplace mantle. it will be approx 5" on the mantle side, flat... and then another piece attached to it, like an L, with maybe 7" up/down. So I am going use 1/2" dowels. SO I need a one half inch dowel jig? I plan to have 2 dowels in the thickness, placed about 3/4" from the top/bottom... and space the dowels every 6"? That's my plan. some 24 dowels... I need advice.
Yes you absolutely can. If the board is only a few inches wide there is enough offset adjustment you could come in from the side and if not you could just use a center line and clamp it down on the face of the board. Good catch. I really should have shown that exact joint since I pointed it out. Lol. 🍻
Great overview. I like the jessem dowleing jigs, but prefer the dowelmax. Both the jessem and dowelmax are premium doweling jigs and worth every penny of their asking prices. The best purpose for those cheap doweling jigs is landfill padding. They're that bad. In regards to the jessem and dowelmax, I do as little layout as possible; reference surfaces are enough for joints so accurate, their tightness will make Cheryl blush.
Is the Jessem easier to use on table legs with a reveal like I saw you doing here then walk the Dawelmax is? I have Dawelmax and it’s been great, but it is very easy to make a mistake on tapered legs with a reveal it gets confusing.
I bought this jig after watching your video. I can't seem to get perfectly straight holes though. I'm using the Jessem drill bits but it seems the cylinders aren't long enough to prevent the drill from drilling at a slight angle. Any tips?
I think Dowelmax would be easier given that it has a built in clamp. But on much wider board, this is a great option. I didn't even know JessEm made one. Thanks.
Yeah, the built in clamp is why I chose the dowelmax over the jessem. You can use the dowelmax on wider boards as well, it's just not as intuitive. Some shop-made jigging helps a lot. The jessem jig in this video is actually their third (I think) iteration; their first lookded and functioned much like the dowelmax, so no surprise that one is no longer sold. The second one is a very nice aluminum jig that's very heavy duty. The one in this video is the third; it's meant to be a more budget friendly version while not making a huge compromise to quality or accuracy.
If it were self clamping it would fundamentally change the overall design, be just a copy of others and then people would be complaining about that. 😂 Besides, why would a manufacturer invest money into something that would be redundant like a clamp in a woodworking tool in a shop full of woodworking clamps? 😂 Everyone has a complaint but not everyone has a good idea. 😂
Absolutely. No built-in clamping system is an absolute deal-breaker. It makes it so much more cumbersome and a pain in the a** than it needs to be. I do like the center reference notch, but otherwise, the Dowelmax is far superior.
Isn't it a bit gimmicky and weird to have a mannequin to talk to in the shop? Personally, I think your content is good although this is the first video I have seen, so you don't need to use gimmicks. People search for these videos to learn. While some light-hearted jokes are fine, I felt your jokes were too often and distracting. You may want to take them down a notch.
Like you, this was the first video I saw from this channel. I liked the content, but the humor is why I actually hit the subscribe button. This guy is f'in hilarious! The end bit about keeping the nail straight was 🔥
Haven't seen any of your videos before, but you had me at "damn it, Cheryl!"

Edit: haven't even watched the video yet...
I was sure hoping she could make the cut for new shop assistant. She aced the interview. Lol.

LOVE my DowelMax! For the precision and ease of.

I must ask... You called customer service to voice your concerns about squareness after you verified that your jig was square?

"new" stainless steel jig, which is not the same as the old one as it not compatible currently to the old dowel jig workstation. :/
I have the master kit and really like it. I want to try this one for the 45 degree attachment you can get for it.
I want to try that attachment as well. Would be very handy
Can you drill holes in a board face for shelves like you can with their "Master Kit" version, or are you limited to edges and corners?
For shelves, you would be better off using a shelving jig. That way All your holes

Brilliant video on new tools presented by a extreemly qualified craftsman Thanks

I find the Joint Genie to be the best jig overall. Unfortunately not longer available.
Fun video! And yes, the Jessem is really good - and so is the DowelMax. You pay for the precision and you get it!
Both of them are for sure top notch tools. I’m excited to have one of them. Thank you! 🍻

2:10 "What if I want to put the boards like that??" Can the Jessem jig set up doweling joints like that??

Great stuff! Watching your video cost me! LOL I just purchased the Weekend Hobbyist Package.

Absolutely! I love when I am able to afford the high quality tools. Both the Jessem and the Dowelmax I know are great quality. 🍻

Sure seems easier to me with the positive stops.

Matt made it youtube channel has a fix for that
Thanks @@mwrcrft ! You got a link to the video? I can't seem to find it.

What is that clamp you were using, it looks pretty slick.
Pony Jorgenson quick clamp. Very handy.
That was a great vid. The jig is definitely impressive
That simple box throw to the mannequin made me subscribe hahaha, nice tool too 👌😅
The big question is of course if this awesome thing also comes in metric for the rest of the world
I’m not sure about having to use clamps to hole it in place, what keeps it from slipping on the piece when clamping?
What keep Anything from slipping, while clamping?
That jig is in the mail as I type this.
It’s really good stuff. 👌🏼
I think Dowelmax would be easier given that it has a built in clamp. But on much wider board, this is a great option. I didn't even know JessEm made one. Thanks.
The built in clamp on the dowelmax is great but I really love how this Jessem one sets the offset. Very easy and intuitive. 👌🏼. Thanks!

You should do a comparison with the Drill Pro and see really which one is far more versatile
Can this make a mid panel dowel hole? No one seems to show that so I presume not... thank you!
I'll stick with my old Dowelmax, good review.
$69.99. !!! That is pricy for that JessEm downing Jig!!!!
It is. It I really like it. Very accurate.
Just nail it already, Cheryl.
She makes a great shop assistant. 😉
Funny guy. Don’t mind the humor in your reviews!
This is a good comparison!
Thank you.
4-6 weeks? I need instant gratification dammit!
Cheryl doesn't say much.
She is new so a bit shy. Great shop assistant though. 👌🏼.
Nice joint man … far out
Totally…
Could of been little bit more honest on the the price no where near the price you showed gor what you had in the box😢

Very biased video towards the ones you don't like! If you took your time using all of the examples, they would work fine!!
Child lock funny one
Never seen your channel before but you lost me with the constant Sheryl pop ups. Possibly not as cute as you think it is. Just sayen'.
Fine detailed review, of a certainly good tool.
However, your mannequin is nothing but a running bad and not funny joke.
That thing is slow to use
Except for the absolutely obscene price, not self clamping and no dowel making jigs included it sounds great. Sorry not impressed.

Why does Cheryl put up with your s***?
JessEm makes good tools but their customer service is THE WORST! It’s soooo bad I won’t ever buy anything from them again.
Interesting to hear. I haven’t had to contact them for anything
Dowel max is better
In miter applications, sure. In most other applications, absolutely not.
