Mine too, have a visceral reaction every time I hear it, tears just flow & flow. Seems to embody my mum who passed away, even though I can't quite consciously understand why I made that connection ❤
This song literally can get me "high" sometimes to the same extent as, say, pot could. Especially the synths at the latter part of the song. Hypnotic, what can I say.
This whole song is really something. I feel it like this: the harmony is endless but has a resolution, but again isn't exactly where you expect it to be, but at the end of the first half of the changes. It's saying like "yeah rest a little bit but you know it isn't over yet" and than goes on with building tension and releasing on the fifth grade, so it isn't a proper resolution and has the same meaning of the previous chord (which was the tonic), but it's said with other words. And it keeps going endlessly. And then there's that sound that gives the tempo and it's really the opposite of the harmony: it's a firm point, even when it's dissonant with the other chords, but it's there. And the snare sound tells something else: it is delicate, yet present I'm not sure but to me this music (and just the music) it's like a metaphor for life.
If you listen to Sea Within a Sea by the Horrors, the looping keyboard that comes in the middle of the song sounds eerily similar to the middle keyboard that comes in the song by the Horrors. That's because Geoff Barrow, a founding member of Portishead, and seen in this video playing percussion produced The Horrors album Primary Colours, which contains Sea Within a Sea. If you like the Rip check out Sea Within a Sea. The similarity is haunting and beautiful. Probably the best single in The Horrors catalog, even the music videos have similarities.
Actually Sea Within a Sea its a rendering of an old song by CAN - Mother Sky, and yes the keyboard that comes in the song by the Horrors its actually very similar to this
As she walks in the room Scented and tall Hesitating once more And as I take on myself And the bitterness I felt I realize that love flows Wild, white horses They will take me away And the tenderness I feel Will send the dark underneath Will I follow? Through the glory of life I will scatter on the floor Disappointed and sore And in my thoughts I have bled For the riddles I've been fed Another lie moves over
My Life is wanting yearning From darkened deep water I'm reaching For something or someone to hold on to The glistening light in my eye's fades into the peaceful sky Up where I can't see myself to hate my reflection Where the birds sing to me to ease my heart's despair Yet I am still Alone
+Caverman Cheers Caverman! I'm starting to play music again and write for I felt dead for so long. A rebirth of Life I am feeling. Thanks for being positive and supporting, Love you
CragieSea No prob, ma'am. I'm a struggling songwriter myself. The thing with me is that I never finish my stuff. I'd start something, liking it very much, but end up hating it eventually and ultimately scrapping it. I'm glad to have heard your story of hope. Well, I'm still very young, in fairness. I'm just 19.

I will never forget hearing this song for the first time. A few months before the album came out, at ATP 2007 which was curated by Portishead themselves. For all of us waiting to hear just another bunch of trip hop songs and were surprised by the their new sound. This song definitely stood out along with Machine Gun and a few others. Those were the days..
Portishead and Radiohead are part of my life
you got head
Yes!!!!! Soundtrack!!!!! Along with Elliott Smith. ❤
Don’t forget Talkinghead(s)
This would be a great combo for sure.
❤
she sings like her heart is breaking. it makes me cry every single time
God yeah, have you heard her song 'Mysteries'?
Oh I get you, I feel the same.
It's the same for me
Bardzo sugestywne wykonanie.

What I absolutely love about Beth is that She turns to her Gang. Her team. (during instrumentals)
Me too, so sweet.
That’s a really rare movement in the band’s live. It’s so sweet and full of love❤
That has to be the gentlest sax I've ever heard in my life.
Beth Gibbons is divine. So much passion so much pain and such a beautiful voice
Gunnhild Edwards true
Could this be the most beautiful song ever recorded and performed...?
Melancholic goosebumps every time i'm listening to it...:-)
Damn...
i cry out my butthole every time
MARC WILLIAMS
Try Chelsea Wolfes live acoustic version of HalfSleeper........
Between this one and 'Paradise Circus' by Massive Attack, i call it a tie!...
If you don't get goosebumps you're not human
Bent - swollen
Lamb - Gabriel
Slipknot - Vermilion part 2.
i feel like i am listening to music from 50 years in the future.
Except it's music from 5 years ago.
thats how advanced beths stlye is!!
Or 50 years ago from the past in some kind of alternate reality.
I would cry if I saw this live..one of my top 5 cherished songs.
mine too
I have been fortunate to see them live, they are amazing, it's beautiful to hear this song live.
Mine too, have a visceral reaction every time I hear it, tears just flow & flow. Seems to embody my mum who passed away, even though I can't quite consciously understand why I made that connection ❤
This song is one of the songs that can jar the connection between what feels like reality and what we really are. Self aware energy.
This song literally can get me "high" sometimes to the same extent as, say, pot could. Especially the synths at the latter part of the song. Hypnotic, what can I say.
Eh?
❤
You are exactly right..
What a beautiful observation. Tears😢
Best song ever..? Perhaps
Clive Deamer is very lucky, he plays in Radiohead and Portishead
Luckyhead
@@pavcueto baldhead
He also played for Robert Plant.
Or he is just fucking good...
@@maxletendre I was going to say, perhaps they are lucky to have him.
This is the only song to give me the same feeling as Elliott Smith's best work. An all-time favorite and I only heard it today.

La letra es también una metáfora de la vida
When a vocal is so key and yet so minor in the scheme of a piece. Just amazing.

From darkened deep water I'm reaching

The glistening light in my eye's fades into the peaceful sky
Up where I can't see myself to hate my reflection
Where the birds sing to me to ease my heart's despair
Yet I am
