blew a spliff, watched portishead do this song from the front row, and then Beth walked up. reached out and shook my hand. It's one of the highlights of my life.
An album that literally changed my life when I was 18. For months I could not listen to anything else. This song still haunts me, in a good way: reminds me that even intense sadness can be turned into solace, thanks to talent and creativity
Holy shit. Mesmerizing, captivating, haunting, emotionally dramatic, draining and impactful. Best performance I've seen from Portishead where they took a song off the album and made it even better. And that's HARD AS HELL to do. In terms of emotional impact alone, this is genius. Andddddd I typed all that BEFORE I even heard Beth's last 30 seconds. My God, even better.
I almost prefer this version over the album cut… loved this band from when I first heard Dummy at 15. Portishead forever!!! None like them before, will never be another…. Finally words that made sense of some complex emotions
Fantastic version. Crazy to think this was 14 years after dummy and its been 16 years now since this perfomance. I would have been about 3 when dummy was released and about 17 here. TIME GOES QUICK. And also slow. Love Portishead 🌛🌟
I was front and dead center. Easily one of the two best shows I have ever been to. My life is now divided into Before Machine Gun & After Machine Gun. It shook my very soul.
im proud of what im listening..i mean..bands like Portishead..Massive Attack..have talented members...As we know for example..Geoff Barrow plays the Bass,drums,keyboard,Turntables,guitar..Such a talented person and he feels music..Portishead has a music with feelings.
They are like wild waves of the sea, churning up the foam of their shameful deeds. They are like wandering stars, doomed forever to blackest darkness. - Jude 1:13
20 yrs later I'm sitting here in the morning reading my Bible and come across this verse. And stand straight up realizing it's this song! It's going to be a Portishead day today. Haven't had one in quite some years.
even with the bass slightly out of tune it still sounds good. i love the crazy look on her face right when the bass starts. they played this last night at the shrine in los angeles and it was phenomenal.
holy shit. sorry day of the lord and shit. but wow. I guess I haven't looked because I thought they just disappeared but thank you thank you ty for this. and all. truly.
One of my favorites of their songs.. simpler than others in a way.. but very dark and beautiful, and this version in particular is pretty fine. I have this theory that the chorus is comparing her depression to the heat death of the universe. "Wandering stars, for whom it is reserved, the darkness, the blackness, forever.." .. Look it up!
Very enigmatic. After looking up the lyrics of several of their songs they do use a lot biblical wording. I'm not sure who writes their lyrics but many of them seem to be about torment. Even as an atheist I see the bible as an amazing bit of literature, embroidered as it is. Her humming at the end is other worldly. And I wanted to crucify who ever cut it so abruptly.

That's awesome man!
Lol so jealous RN
💐
Great experiance👍
WoW Amazing, I love them they re so cool…
An album that literally changed my life when I was 18. For months I could not listen to anything else. This song still haunts me, in a good way: reminds me that even intense sadness can be turned into solace, thanks to talent and creativity
Dude... literally A perfect circle and portishead on repeat from 18-19.. I can only listen to them now here and there
The same happened here. In 2019’s summer I only listened to Them. They have given me countless catharsis
Yeah, they were kinda heavy on the goth angle for a bit🤔
I was 15
It’s a perfect album
the last 30 seconds gets me every time...sooooooo good!!!!!!! her voice is hauntingly-beautiful
The main reason I find this song on UA-cam.... the ending of this song live
Its pain. The last few seconds make me realize Im not alone in this "darkness" this pain. The darkness in betwixt stars...the darkness last forever.
@@lukie2txmes775 she also did a lot of heroin
From 3:49 Beth's voice is like that of a theremin. Wonderful!
The soundtrack to your soul spiraling down to the abyss...haunting.
This such a different version from the album. It amazes me that just three "instruments" can do this.
There was a time when there was such beautiful music
Still is loads of it we just arent present enough to feel it
30 people are happy and well-adjusted
Their original version is awesomeness, but for me this is truly otherworldly.
God I love this band.

I'm so amazed by the atmosphere they manage to put together with just a bass guitar, a guitar with a slide and Beth's haunting voice. Simply beautiful
Es hermosa, nostálgica, increíblemente desgarradora
When you listen to music you should feel an emotion. I did. Thanks for uploading.
I was front and dead center. Easily one of the two best shows I have ever been to. My life is now divided into Before Machine Gun & After Machine Gun. It shook my very soul.
Literally gave me goosebumps
I used to listen to this album over and over and over when I was living in this boarding house very weird time of my life
22yrs old now! still rocks!
23 years have already passed?! Man, the world's about to end if we can't get better than this!!
Lol 30 over here and I appreciate them more now
I'm about to turn 46 . We used to make with chicks drunk and high at hookie parties to this album when I was about 16 or 17
listening 2017. it's too beautiful to be played out.

Thanks Jav I do appreciate this.
Somehow these sounds are heard from even my deepest places
literally took the breathe out of me.....damn...if just 1 sec longer at the end, this video would have been perfect.
tout simplement magnifique
The blackness of darkness, forever...
breathtaking..
Hauntingly good performance by Beth Gibbons.
Appears in the dictionary under "Bleak". What an absolutely stunning performance.
Damn, the suspense in this song, her vocal sounds like it could break at any time.
This version keeps amazing me.
Beautiful.
“Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.”
Very special. Thank you.
creepily beautiful
This song puts a spell on you, makes you think of your pain, it's beautiful and haunting but shouldn't be played too often. Stay in the light people
Ive being listing to this song like for 1 month really often, its just a masterfuckingpiece,
But I totally agree with you! Staying in the light!
Stay in the darkness so you notice the light easier.
All time favourite ! Thank you for your timeless voice
My favorite track but killer concept 😊
Her voice is always strong
She has 3 voices haha. Is magic. Like bristol s músic
Thanks for uploading this! 🖤
Madness, Sick track I🖤t 🤘🏻
Using needlenose plier, frigging genius, amazing
Damn, that outro...
Mark Sandman once asked "Where is the cave where the wise woman went?" and she's right here since forever singing this song.
this is awesome thanks for sharing this
thank you for upload it! I tried to find this version without all that people noise! but it was soooo difficult!!
even with the bass slightly out of tune it still sounds good. i love the crazy look on her face right when the bass starts. they played this last night at the shrine in los angeles and it was phenomenal.
lets call it intonation :)
Melancholy master piece
This is amazing
La pure beauté.

Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. - Jude 1:13
So f'in bummed I missed them in Berkley this week. I heard their show was amazing in LA.
love it....
It was like WHOA

awesome!!!
This version made me cry when I saw them at the Hammerstein.
reminds me of pink floyds live at pompeii, great stuff
10 out of 10

Still kills!!
MÚSICA INOLVIDABLE. UNIVERSAL.

Beth writes all their songs
This song is about heroin addiction,
this song is about anything
@JavTheGreat
Just saw them do this last night, front row, harvest festival in OZ.....wowa. Incredible.
