To be Clear. Truman Capote didn’t “hate” Audrey was chosen for the role. He hated what the director and Paramount did to his book and the characters. The Holly in the movie was NOTHING like the Holly in the book.
Thank you for the clarification. I have not read the book and now would like to. This move makes me feel too sad, I gave it away . Perhaps it is because I am older now and have experienced more pain in life with men. Golightly's dissipated life and how hard she tried to appear as if she was being hurt by it with her studied "glibness" breaks my heart.
Yeah his ideal pick was Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn image wise at the time was her complete opposite in a way, and breakfast at Tiffany’s wasn’t meant to be a romance either
Holly in the movie was a much more tragic and likeable figure. The scene where her brother dies is heartbreaking. But the ending of the movie made no sense.
I hated Breakfast at Tiffany's- the movie.
It is true, Truman did have MM in mind for the role of Holly.
Anyone who read the book was in shock that AUDREY was going to play a prostitute. No way - never.
So yes, Truman hated the casting of Audrey. Of course not Audrey herself.

She also almost starved to death during WW 2 in nazi occupied Holland. She went on to become a huge advocate for human rights, particularly regarding children. A truly classy lady. Watch the great film "Two For The Road" if you want to see Audrey Hepburn at her best. See also "Wait Until Dark" for another of Hepburn's great film performances. She was underrated, despite all the awards she earned.

My sister could tell you so much more. She's her icon. Has her coat from "Wait Until Dark" has gone to dinner with her sons, and a hand written letter from them after receiving the coat. I'm sure it was a bit of Audrey that had my sister getting her masters in Fashion and Dress History.
