Very nice review! Finally had a chance to try this over the past weekend comparing it to the standard Blue label. I agree, this Umami has malt profile much more that the regular Blue. The appearance is darker, redder and appears to have more legs in the glass. I enjoyed nosing, tasting and the finish a lot better than the regular Blue. I did get hint of savory salt by mid palette and it stays through the finish along with peppery and berries notes. Yes, the palate profiles remind me of Mortlach and Talker for sure. Quite delicious but I think you are paying too much for the marketing and packaging of this bottle. Luckily I have a great friend wanting to share while I did my part with my various 18 yrs single malts in return.
Dear Mr Luening, i shall have a small request to make: would you be so kind as to suggest a high-quality whisky to me? I need a bottle for a whisky "buff" that won't break my bank since i'd be giving the bottle to him as a special gift, but i am a complete neophyte about whisky, so i know how difficult and tricky this task is. Any advice would be gratefully accepted. Thanks. P.S. Very cool watch, by the way - might i ask what is that?
It is quite difficult to make recommendations without knowing a person's taste. Good starter whiskies are Balvenie Double Wood 12 years, Dalwhinnie 15 years, Glenfiddich 12 years, Glendronach 12 years and Glenfarclas 12 years. Regarding your question, I'm not sure which uhr I was wearing in the video. Usually I wear a Rolex Submariner.
@@Whiskycom Dear Mr Luening, first and foremost thank you so very much for your swift and highly considerate reply. The person this bottle's supposed to be for prefers scotch and is quite the enthusiast (he certainly knows his whisky, but I wouldn't go as far as calling him a Master taster such as yourself Sir). I'd like to impress him pleasantly with a bottle that he couldn't have anticipated, if you know what I mean. P.S. That watch is certainly not a Stowa, or Laco, or any other of the original uhr makers - i may not know whisky, but i do know a thing or two about nice watches! Maybe it's an IWC Ingenieur?
The fact that these Johnny Walkers still get sold in today's Whisky culture at such a silly price shows willful ignorance 😂 I'll take 4 single cask bangers over this please.
Our glass was specifically designed by Horst Luening and is currently only available for our customers from the Netherlands via our online shop Whisky.com.
It is Indeed. I wouldn't be surprised if the cost of the whisky is one third of the selling price... the other two thirds in marketing, packaging and profit
I don't think a blend should EVER cost this much. Never. Ever. I can guarantee you can find or mix your own whiskys for a fraction of the price and taste just as good
Overpriced, overrated blended scotch, ideal for whisky-illiterate corporate brown-nosers who want to impress their bosses. The whole scotch industry is taking a turn for the snobby, new-rich type. I found that bourbon is much more genuine and offers real value to those who want to spend a little more.
True. Sad but true. In part because the big corporations that own bourbon brands (Diageo, Suntory, etc) are applying the same strategies that they use for scotch. However, bourbon still offers more value at a low-mid range than scotch, in my opinion @@JR-oq1ms
such a amazing review Horst, and lovely unboxing experience.
Sounds delicious...I will have to buy a bottle. Thanks for the review.
I love scotch, Japanese whisky, and umami. Half-Asian so I grew up absolutely loving the taste. If only I was rich I'd pick up a bottle!
saw it at Costco for $300 :(
another great tasting Mr. Horst thank you!
I read in an article there was some Talisker, Mortlach, Benrinnes, Cameronbridge and Port Dundas whiskies in this blend....
So expensive and it still has grain in it 😂😂
Is that a Grand Seiko Tentagraph you are wearing Sir? Excellent watch

Great review, but we missed the second sip 😃
I wonder if it would feel like it was worth $2 per sip in a blind taste test though...
Didn't sound like its worth the big price tag.
Umami is Japanese but even me didn’t know this bottle. I will try.
I love JW Blue, this looks amazing. Hope I can try it.

someone mentioned Grand Seiko Tentagraph @@wadsworth2351
Great reviews Horst! How does it compare with the regular Blue Label I wonder? Are there massive differences?
They are similiar in a way but the Elusive Umami offers more complexitiy and sweeter notes
seen an add for this in my local booz store magazine last month, horst my you aged long time no see

600$ CAD where I live 😬😥
Lovely Bottle Design 🥃
Can you drink the bottle?
@@steveno7058 what kind of question is that ?
At least 43% for this hype whisky
Just buy a mortlach 16 if you want that meaty umami taste
Or even better any Craigallachie
Seems like another hyper-marketed, overpriced blend. I'll stick to the single malts at a fraction of the price!
