Dorothy Loudon is astonishing. 1:35:30 She's there to belt out her biggest hit, ‘Easy Street’ from _Annie_ , as part of a medley, which she does with crowd-pleasing gusto, and just before the last line “Better get there soon” she gives us the tiniest glimpse of the genuine desperation underneath Miss Hannigan's plea. It's a staggering display of emotional investment and commitment to character.
1986 was the last GREAT Tony Awards show -as produced by originators Alexanderand Hildy Cohen. In addition, to the nominated shows that year, you got excerptsfrom 40 Tony-winning PLAYS of the past PLUS a musical overview of ALL thewinning musicals. ALL THIS IN ONE SHOW! Since then, the programs havebecome as DULL AS THE OSCARS!
In other words, Alexander H. Cohen and Hildy Parks have produced 20 consecutive Tony Award telecasts together. Not only was this Tony Award telecast the final one for Parks and Cohen, it was also the last one for longtime director Clark Jones. After this one, the next year's Tony Award telecast would have longtime Emmys producer Don Mischer producing and directing. Since 2004, the Tonys are produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner's production company White Cherry Entertainment.
I disagree. The Tony's era were the best years in 1970-1990's then start to fall apart. What Deniro did was not right to the Tony's. If he was a black man he probably would be banned from the show or his career would be ruined.
Swoosie Kurz and Sam Waterston are both in Grace and Frankie tv show, oh and Peter Gallagher too. Not to mention, the marvelous Lily Tomlin. Wonderful!
Bernadette Peters at 15:56 “Some people” from gypsy 44:59 “unexpected song” from song & dance 1:45:35 (spoilers) wins the award for best performance by a leading actress in a musical Can I also mention how she changes costumes 3 times during one show
Incredible! The 40 year salute to the best dramas was worth the price of admission alone! I wish they had included something about Gwen Verdon- she was one of the best things in the 25th anniversary tony’s.
Mine too. Bea and Estelle worked well together I believed they were Italian instead of Jewish. All four women were brilliant but sometimes Betty White character was a little to naive.
Go ahead and make your life better and fast forward to "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar" from BIG DEAL at 53:40. Fosse's dancers were ASTONISHING. Huge props to the soloists Wayne Cilento (left), and Bruce Anthony Davis (right)!
@@iHeartsNostalgiaPit Was that the year Avenue Q (a show which was done by the future scribes of Frozen) won everything under the sun and subsequently beat out Wicked?
@@robertofenloch9595 well they won the most important Tony Awards(score, book and best musical), if anything Assassins won everything under the sun. At least Wicked a couple of Tony's
Dynamite program -- with a genuinely stellar cast. // It's fantastic to see and hear tributes to the Golden Age of Broadway. Before Disney got into the money game with their over-produced and formulaic pap. The sequence that begins at 1:01:37 is incredible. What a great idea that was.
Does anyone out there have a video of the 1987 telecast? I would love to see the moment when Les Miserables marched off (in place, of course) with the Best Musical.
If you are still around this channel has uploaded the wonderful 1987 telecast. It includes Beau Arthur with Angela Lansbury and the Les Mis cast singing.
In the opening, all of the American women are all dressed in light colored, sparkly gowns. Dame Cleo Laine sticks out in an elegant black velvet down with stunning drop diamond earrings in the best possible way!
I loved how the went over all the great shows of the past! Have they done that at the Tony's since then? Or was this a one time thing only for the 40th Tony awards?
There were more people on the stage than there were in the audience! The performers probably had to change in the alley behind the theater. The thing is that you know the name of every actor. Most of them are gone now- replaced by - whose that?
I can’t agree less, not only the actors, but the shows as well. Most of the great classics of the Golden age have never had a proper and hyped revival they deserve. To mentions a few, Kismet, Hallelujah Baby!, Flower Drum Song, Wonderful Town, Damn Yankees, Mame, Sweet Charity, Man of La Mancha, Funny Girl, Bye Bye Birdie, The Sound of Music, Applause, Mack and Mabel, among others. As much as I live and admire shows like Book of Mormon, Wicked, Dear Evan Hansen, Six, Hamilton, Mean Girls, and Hadestown, Broadway will never be the same again.
Honestly the humility across this entire crew, all of them huge stars, shows that they were ALL troupers. There's such an affection for one another and a willingness to share the spotlight. It's lovely, really.
Never realized until now just how many women holding positions in Lily Tomlin's play were thanked in Tomlin's acceptance speech. Not surprising, considering who she is, but interesting.
I used to like to watch the Tony awards but I stopped around mid-2000s. Robert Deniro made me so ashamed when he said a cursed word two years ago. He ruined a beautiful presentation. I am done. He embarrassed his family with his childish behavior.
Wow...REAL STARS!!! These days are long away and far gone!

Note that Juliette Prowse originated the role of “Sweet Charity” In London in 1966. Gwen Verdon was the original, of course.

What a wonderful treasure chest of memorable performers and performances!
This program won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction.
This is Gold!! Love this channel!
The talent in this is mind-boggling.

Cohen and Parks certainly made their last Tonys count. Hopefully they'll do excerpts in future Tony Awards.
Not anymore! Ricky Kirshner's (son of Don Kirshner) and Glenn Weiss' production company White Cherry Entertainment produces the Tonys now!
actually I feel that the 2014 Tony's were rather entertaining

Indeed - it really wouldn't be the Tonys with Ms. Peters, her beauty, talent and, of course, her decolletage!
It was a slow night for her.
An excellent presentation!

Saw it out of town in Boston....choreography was amazing!
Frazier's wife and his father won Tonys on the same night!
Plus, Jerry Zaks, who directed The House Of Blue Leaves, would also direct episodes of Frasier.
I guess this was the most Frasier-est Tony awards ever while 2004 was the most Disney awards ever (seriously watch that one and you'll see)
