Yes- as much as I love seeing the Legends, it is always bittersweet to me because all of the ones I grew up with are gone now, and unless I knock over a bank, I can't get to see the new faces on stage... :-(
When Angela Lansbury descends the stairs in the opening, she becomes the definition of what a bigger than life , glamorous Broadway star should look like, with the effervescent personality and limitless talent to complete the image, so well-deserving of her every Tony Award and accolade.
And also, off-stage, warm, genuine and gentle - I had the privilege of spending an hour with her for an interview prior to one of her Tony hosting duties shortly after the one posted here. Lovely woman, and I did enough of these to know when they're faking it.

I always remembered Angela's gown. Both she and Bea had thickened a tad around the middle but her designer worked to hide it, while Bea apparently just 'threw up her hands' and adopted her later, Golden girls fashion silhouette.
This one was a classic. So many people I love to see. Bernadette Peters, Jack Lemmon, and I am not even a regular tv/theatre fan. Love Angela Lansbury and love the duet with Bea Arthur. Humour makes me watch! Watch this for this.
I watched this on TV from my hotel room in midtown Manhattan. I'd just moved to NYC a couple of days earlier and it was thrilling to be in the same city where this magic was happening!
Wow, what a treat. Thank you for positing this wonderful gem from yesteryear. Love Les Miserables. glad to see them win so many awards. Love Angela Lansbury.
So loved Robert Preston. An amazing actor. Incredible energy and seemed the man of the year in anything he was in. His role in Victor/Victoria was such risk, but he handled it with aplomb and nailed his character perfectly. Belated condolences to all who loved him. :) I love Angela, Mary, and the rest...people who I watched during my childhood in the 60's. I was an old-soul and loved all of the older stuff. G'day.

I'm looking through the comments and people are mentioning Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur and Alan Rickman and many others. Did anyone notice Tommy Tune! Was anyone left that wasn't on this show? I couldn't believe how many stars they got for this odd number 41st year. Makes you wonder what the 40th the year before must have been like. Why don't they spend the money and make these awards shows as good as this anymore?

There were some Tony Shows, beginning in mid-70s, when the audience was instructed to stay seated, and not stand, not even for a standing ovation, as well as when to applaud or not. And now, since you're your comment three years ago, Angela has passed. Is there any doubt what the best awards show on TV is? Year after year after year. The two tributes were extraordinary. I saw Mary Martin and Robert Preston in "I Do! I Do!" with my parents from the first row of the theater (we were just lucky getting those tickets by mail) and met Miss Martin afterwards in her dressing room. Everyone said my mother resembled her and she invited us backstage to verify or disprove the theory after my mother wrote her with the story. What a wonderful woman and actress. Wish I could get back to see more today (and wish I could afford the tickets). But boy, does this video bring back very fond memories. Thank you for sharing it with us.
And once again, 2019 Tony’s, the most entertaining Awards show from start to finish! Corden a great host and that New York theatre loving audience, many of them actors of the Broadway stage, infuse the broadcast with such enthusiasm, showcasing their absolute joy for just being there. (Unlike Oscars etc where the audience looks like they can’t wait until it’s over)
Angela & Bea completely brilliant doing a stunning "Bosom Buddies", clearly "Mame" the movie would have been a lasting classic with this phenomenal duo great this captivating performance captured on film to savor and enjoy a magical moment over and over...strange audience didn't give deserved Standing Ovation for this once in a lifetime special performance by two legendary icons at the top of their game...
My dad would take a trip to London every year when I was young and bring back the soundtrack of the newest hit musical. So when I was 8 years old I scooted around the floor in my socks to a record Starlight Express. And when cassette tapes came along he would play those tapes in the car all year long. 26:05 - 1987's DRAMA!!! Love it.
But also -- this was a STACKED Tony's -- Les Mis?! Yus.
The Duet with Lansbury & Arthur. I thought Lansbury was having a ball up there. RIP those two gorgeous ladies.
My love for Angela Lansbury got my attention
I cried when Angela came on stage
man the ceremonies back then were a whole lot different from today, they don't show the plays anymore not to mention the revival of a play/musical are two separate categories now
Watching because Arthur and Lansbury are to be reunited tonight enjoy
