  • MEGI - INTRODUCTION to the basis dual fuel system. Ive tried to cover a simple set up from the cargo tanks which are also the fuel tanks right to the MAIN ENGINE where this gas fuel is injected. You need to have a basic engineering knowledge to get to know this system.. I will certainly get down to what other systems are involved in operating and maintaining the system in some time.. This is just the first part, in the next video I will show u actual components and the engine actually operating on GAS mode,

    Do we need separate Pilot fuel injectors on Main engines. and what about generator at what pressure Gas enters in generators.

    • @Thedeepseaman
      @Thedeepseaman  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, the we do need pilot fuel injectors as Auto ignition temperature for GAs is very high, like your car engines using gas have spark plugs.... Incase of MEGI engines here, the pilot fuel injectors are as good any main fuel injectors (on normal ME Engines) for fuel to as these engines have a seamless switch to full fuel mode if the gas trip occurs without affecting engine power and performance. The only difference is the fuel quantity injected by the main fuel injectors when in gas mode.. (Gas Index: about 90 % while pilot fuel about10 %)
      Generator engines till operate on the standard diesel engine cycle and are note dual fuel here.

    what i fail to understand is why the PVU is placed before the vaporizer and why do they even need a PVU? And a reciprocating pump for liquid? Wouldn't it make sense if they had the reciprocating compressor placed after the vaporizer?🤔

    • @Thedeepseaman
      @Thedeepseaman  2 місяці тому

      they have tried that earlier on initial gen engines but it was a failure as the compressors required are 8 stage reciprocating type and had several operational issues and failure.. for the reciprocating/hydraulic driven PVU, this is MAN ES own concept and has proved much more effective than then previous gen compressors . the effective work done is lesser comparing the losses and spares involved. the size of the vaporizer is really very small and thus quantity of heating medium also required is lesser, so all in all its a great design improvement by MAN ES to have their own PVU. another key factor is the space requirement is lesser for the PVU unit over the compressors.. each engine has 3 PVU pumps, engine can operate comfortably even with 2..

    Chief why can't we directly heat with steam instead of glycol ?

    • @Thedeepseaman
      @Thedeepseaman  2 роки тому +4

      good question, glycol freezing point very low, glycol enters the vaporizer at 48.. the ethane enters at -80, this will freeze the steam if steam is used instead of glycol..

  • @Surendhar2002
    @Surendhar2002 Рік тому +1

    Sir we can use steam as heating
    medium right then we want glycol to heat up then again use glycol as heating medium to fuel.
    Why we want seperate glycol system

    380 bar is heavy , may be may not be uneasy to use, explain the new gas burning at about 7 /6 bar , heard injected from scavenge ports, possible if you can simplyfy

    • @Thedeepseaman
      @Thedeepseaman  Рік тому

      380 bar is the standard for ETHANE, MEGI- Concept... MEGI for LNG is a little lower at 300... this is the only way proven ethane can be used in the engine. this is based on the 2 stroke diesel cycle & hence pre-mix fuel is not injected here.
      the other injection in the scav manifold, you are talking about is the other concept... the 4 stroke cycle...
      advantage of the MEGI concept is the methane/gas slip is almost negligible compared to this principle of operation.
      I have only read about this concept and hence cant give first hand explanation where as on the other hand, the megi-conept i am very familiar as i have been working on these engines for over a year now.

    Chief, so in normal sailing your using the fuel from the cargo tanks? Not regular diesel?

    • @Thedeepseaman
      @Thedeepseaman  2 роки тому +4

      we have to use both... Diesel acts as your spark plug like in petrol engines, this is called as pilot fuel... Gas fuel is max 90-92% 8-10% is pilot fuel (diesel or VLSFO)... my engine consumes 35 tons ethane per day and 8 tons pilot fuel..

    Sir, when and why are we using pilot fuel and when we use gas ?

    • @Thedeepseaman
      @Thedeepseaman  2 роки тому +1

      pilot fuel is like ur spark plug in petrol engines, this is just diesel/fuel oil injected in minimum quantity to ignite the gas.... gas has a very high auto ignition temp and hence can't be ignited by the heat generated by just compressing air in the cylinder.. (diesel/fuel oil will ignite with just this)... when ever gas (dual fual) has to be burned in the engine, you need a pilot (spark) to ignite the gas .... look at your common LPG/CNG engines on cars/auto-mobiles.. they run on gas but have a spark plug..

    Hello Sir, How is that before and after Vaporizer, the pressure is same (~380 bar), even after adding heat?

    • @Thedeepseaman
      @Thedeepseaman  Рік тому

      pressure control valve and thus its the same, if the pressure goes higher, the stroke rate of the PVU pumps is reduced, flow is continuous on the engine side as this is consumed as fuel... if system trips, this will be vented out at the mast riser

    • @Thedeepseaman
      @Thedeepseaman  2 місяці тому

      @@2609488 there is no compression , just increase in temp, volume is allowed to expand as the other side fuel is being continuously consumed

Almost the concept remains same except few things like its just 10 bar supply pressure for methanol and 50 bars for lpg, FVT,s gas blocks and double walled pipings in common. Thanks..
