Amateur Attempt to fix my expandable garden hose by cutting/shortening it where it sprung a leak.

  • This is a REAL BAD amateur video of me trying to fix my leaky garden hose.
This is the garden hose you can get from amazon/ebay that expands when water creates pressure in the hose. They're nice because when there is no water, the hose takes up little space.
They're bad because they can easily spring a leak if you forget to empty out the hose.
Anyways.. the gist of this video is this.
Let's say you have an expandable garden hose and one day it springs a leak (mine got one near 5 months of light use).
    1. Find out where the leak is.
    2. Cut the hose where the leak is.
    3. Reattach the hose to one of the ends so the hose no longer has a leak
    Simple right?
Hard part: Removing one end of the hose. The clamp is a metal clamp.. in the video.. I don't show how I removed the clamp.. sorry. I didn't have a tripod. All I used was a flat screwdriver and plyers (much harder then it needed to be).
Hard part 2: Reattaching the clamp. I actually tore the clamp apart. My workaround was to use twisty ties. In retrospect.. I maybe should have used zip ties. Regardless.. you need something to restrict the water at where you are reattaching everything at the end of the hose.
Good luck. I repaired mine.. and surprisingly it still works after a few weeks.

I gave up trying to reassemble so I just slipped the inner rubber and outer sheath onto the barb. Then I used a common stainless steel hose clamp to secure it. Worked great and it's easy to repair when it fails next time.

Thank you for this great video. I tried zip ties and it didn't work for me. The wire clamping is much better. To get a nice tight clamp I looped the wire around the sheath and nozzle adapter like you did then put the two ends of the wire into a drill chuck tgen tighten the chuck to clamp in the wire ends and slowly spin the drill clockwise to get a very nice fine twist on the wire and eventually clamp it onto the hose. Cut the excess wire off and fold It down to get a nice flat clamp. Just a thought.

It would have been nice to see this as a video.
Sorry.. I did this last minute.. just to show you could sort of reuse the hose.
I was sad.. since my first expandable hose lasted like 1.5yrs... but this second one you see in this video only lasted about 3-4 months.
Since then my wife got frustrated with me.. and bought a normal hose from walmart for about $15. C'est la vie.

Easy fix just use a Mini Fuel Injection Style Hose Clamp

How to disconnect the connector that you skipped

I mean the other end connector , can it be disconnected ?

@@sincereintl6202 In my example... I cut the end in half. The end closet to the nozzle.. I disassembled using needle nose pliers. The other end of the hose.. the one that hooks to the water.. I never took that apart.
The end that hooks to the water source.. you could take it apart.. but then you'd need to put it back. If you have similar clamps to what the original hose had.. you can try... but I'm not a handyman.. and I really didn't know what to do to secure the end after I removed the metal clamp.

They always seem to break after a few weeks! Not so practical!

Your exactly right. These are essentially hoses made of balloon plastic. They never last

These hoses are trash. Eventually, these burst, just look for a traditional hose if you want it to last longer than 3 months

Agreed. I didn't realize it's made literally from balloon material. It's difficult to remove all the water from hose. Not reasonable to maintain the hose
