Ok so apparently the reason that budgets on anime are so low compared to cartoons is because they heavily underpay their workers. I didn’t know that beforehand so I thought I’d point it out here. Doesn’t really change my opinion on the budget excuse i still think its dumb but I thought I’d clear the air on that whole situation.

I remember that being a hot topic when the whole drama came out. The point of crunchyroll's program was to help out under played animators and we ended up getting this. And to deflect criticism someone from the studio claimed they only had $250,000. Which pissed everyone off more.
Regardless I feel like if you watch something like the original Gundam you can see how bad animation isn't the end all.

The reason, why so many 80s and even some 90s shows had so many mistakes is because they still used cel animation for the frames. Meaning, if you made a mistake, you had to draw the entire cel from the start. They at least had an excuse for that. In our modern times, you can much easier fix mistakes, since everything is now made completely digital.

Just fyi: animation studios in japan are, like most places in japan a major nightmare to work in. Animators are (mostly) in-house and paid by the company itself, most of them are dramatically UNDERpaid. There's even programs targeted to finance animators' stay in dorms so they can use the frankly little money they earn without worrying about housing.
The work ethic in japan is a whole lot different, and the "low" budgets mostly come from overworking the animators. If the animation was done in house by Ray and company with an anime budget they'd probably expose crunchyroll for terrible crunching (hehe) culture.
As an animator, animating is hard as shit and not valued nearly enough.

The ‘ur transphobik’ argument may even damage the people it supposedly “protects” because bad trans writers are never gonna improve if all their legitimate criticism gets shut down right away like this. And it might be their fault that nowadays I can’t name or remember a good piece of media created by a trans person that isn’t The Matrix. Nobody is born a writer, a good writer has gone through trial and error at the expense of their confidence, but the results afterwards speak for themselves.

    • @IceFireofVoid
      @IceFireofVoid 2 роки тому +91

It actively causes resentment towards trans people to use them as a shield to deflect criticism. It reduces the trust in them. If people think that having trans characters or being a trans writer makes your work immune to criticism and you thus don't have to try at all, then people are going to be mistrustful of future works by trans people featuring trans people, worrying that the identity will be used as a shield to allow the show to be terrible.

Here's what I've observed about Jim Light:
*He can't grasp that animation errors are inconsequential compared to writing and good characters, which is the reason people love those old 80s shows.
*He can't grasp the difference between personal attacks and professional criticism... while launching a bunch of personal attacks.
*He doesn't think negative criticism should be done at all, because "why not be POSITIVE?" Here's why: because negative criticism shows people what to avoid in their own work, and can serve as a source of growth and artistic evolution for the ones being criticized. It's a necessary part of producing art that other people will actually see.
*He thinks minorities should be immune to all artistic criticism.
*He uses reaching-so-far-he's-dislocated-his-joints accusations of bigotry in an attempt to silence people he doesn't like.
*He engages in massive hyperbole to paint Guardian HQ as a bigot and troll.
*Despite knowing "nothing" about the show and having watched none of it, he somehow knows the showrunner is a trans-man, and also knows that it doesn't deserve the criticism it's receiving (yes, it does).
*He doesn't believe in individual personal responsibility, since he thinks that a random UA-camr is responsible for what EVERY SINGLE VIEWER of his videos says and does. Never mind that they're people with their own free will and choices - Guardian HQ need to obsessively play Internet police and tell them what to do (which they would ignore anyway, because that's what people do when others tell them what to do).
*He doesn't know the difference between artistic criticism and inciting personal harassment.
*He can't grasp that him not understanding something isn't necessarily someone else's fault. It's his fault. He doesn't understand it, and that's his problem.
*He thinks that mocking a TV show will immediately and inevitably lead to personal harassment by the people watching. I hope he's just as indignant for Robert Zemeckis over the hundreds of "Pinocchio sucks" videos being released right now.
*"The mental gymnastics to justify your continued videos is exhausting." Your mental insufficiency is not Guardian HQ's problem, darling.
*He can't grasp that a content creator does not need his approval to put out videos on a certain topic, nor does Guardian HQ need to justify it. Only in Jim's mind does it need to be justified.
*He can't grasp that just because you keep saying, "You're responsible! You're responsible!" like a parrot that only knows two words, it doesn't actually make Guardian HQ responsible.
*He can't grasp that some people ENJOY examining the artistic failure of bad media. It brings them enjoyment, like solving a puzzle. Just because it isn't HIS idea of fun doesn't invalidate it.
*His entire idea of "convictions" seems to be playing the Internet's nanny (which is like a game of whack-a-mole and will never end) and being suffocatingly positive about bad media.
*Once again, he believes that measured, intelligent criticism of bad media leads immediately and inevitably to harassment. No actual evidence for this, just his beliefs.
*He's very passive-aggressive, manipulative and toxic ("I guess I just expected better, and you’re not showing me you’re capable of being better").
*When someone calls him out on his passive-aggressive, manipulative and toxic behavior, he throws a hissy fit and flounces out ("you’re exactly the type of obsessive fun hating trolling armchair critic that I suspected you were from the start. Thank you for proving my point completely").

I think the issue that people have with trans writers is their need to push an ideology… both in the themes of the show and those they hire to create the show. When you’re picking from select groups that share ideologies you are just making it difficult to find talent. When you create a show that only has issues that relate to trans people you are alienating 90% of your possible audience that don’t relate to the message and themes of the anime. You can have LGBT characters and still have a great show, arcane is a great example of this… however they didn’t focus and revolve the plot around that aspect and pushed it to the side as secondary theme that isn’t prominent but still important.

Being told where I went wrong and how to improve is invaluable. Saying that it's bad to give constructive criticism to marginalized creators is infantilizing and feels like a double standard. Yoshikazu had a pleurisy mid-production and thus was long-term hospitalized, but he was animation director- a critical role to suddenly lose. He's explained in interviews how painful it was to watch the show from his hospital bed every week because he could see every error and questionable composition he would have avoided under his guidance. Itano also worked himself to collapsing multiple times- as he was kinda wont to do given his extreme attention to details that they frankly didn't have the luxury to indulge in at the time. Sunrise was genuinely a poor company back then and every project under them was done on the extra cheap with skeleton crews- so replacement staff and extra hands were just not going to happen. And losing their sponsors halfway through, only getting a late capital infusion thanks to Bandai is well known. So it's not like the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam was wonky in a lot of places due to a lack of skill or care

In contrast, by Raye's own accounts, he had no such problems like what the Gundam team had, and what difficulties he did have were by his own making- not having to make do with little in the middle of crisis. Despite what the one the video is arguing with is claiming- errors from outsourced animation these days is less from technical or mechanical mistakes and more from bad storyboards and not understanding how important they are. From what we have seen in some screenshots- their boards were trash and treating them like merely rough sketches. Those Korean studios are not paid to correct errors in the storyboards, they animate exactly as they are provided. It's not their job to keep track of or question object and design continuity, or to try to fix wonky perspective. Raye's argument about not having the money for reshoots is actually confessing his end didn't prepare it right the first time. Like all the times Sage's books or buttons disappear from scene to scene in just the first episode alone- they had to be missing from the boards and its not the animation studio's job to keep track of it. Meanwhile look at the boards of One Punch Man and it's like night and day in how meticulously detailed they are.

    A) making whole seasons at a time
    B) had mandates for toys (many were based off toys with crude character personalities to work with)
    C) were made at a time when cartoons were considered "just for kids" and were decent shows (remember, people these days think stuff for kids doesn't have to be good)
    D) were working under a variety of regulations that influenced what was permissible to be put in the shows (morality lessons, PSAs, types of violence permissible, etc.)
He-Man came out when he couldn't use his sword for practically anything besides rocks, vines, and robots and couldn't hit anything on screen (loved the "punch the screen" work around). Skeletor could not be aired in France. They produced ~60 episodes PER SEASON and had to reused rotoscoped actors' drawings constantly with a handful of untrained voice actors covering multiple roles to make the budget work. And the kicker for these bigots, Filmation had a high number of homosexual and female staff working the show. So, I have an extremely blatant self insert character. That's just what he was made to be, an all powerful being that's comparable to a god. However, even though that's what he was and still is, I make the characters around him think he's childish, a kind of hobo.
One of my inspirations for this direction is One Punch Man, because my philosophy towards my self insert changed into my creative drive and shifted to a metaphor for my own creative writings. A self insert can be childish and overpowered, to a point where it's ridiculous to give them any respect. To a point, the character is also not interesting in design, one of his defining features is a cloak with a universe inside of it, but people mistake it for a print, I also make it a point that he's wearing black Pajamas. He may stand taller than most, he may be more powerful, but most characters I've written barely trust his words because he doesn't really do much that can make others consider him to be anything of note. He's dissapeared faster than expected a few times, but he lost a fight to someone that can be considered below him because of fair play.
Why am I mentioning all of this? What's the point?
I put more care and thought into a self indulgence character than Raye even put into a project he had for relatively the same amount of time.
Of course my Character is something I put time and effort into, in fact I only think that's only natural. He used to be a self insert RP character, one to be better than others, but he was ultimately just boring. I kept him around because I loved the character and even had unwritten stuff I wanted to do with him.
In Highschool I started thinking about Infinite, what that means to me. It was also in that time I gave him the infinite, a real background as to why he was powerful, but also leaving out qualities to myself because I myself still don't know why. I know how he got there, but not why he is, or why he fully became this way. Y'know I think having unexplained elements are ok as long as they're not actually important to the ideas presented or canon they're in. My character's powers aren't explained as to how he fully and properly got them, I even barred myself from explaining that because the idea behind him is that this power he has is more a curse than a blessing. One Punch Man. If you can practically do all you want, then what satisfaction do you get from it?
With HGS, this mans had more time to develop a philosophy with his creation, he had even made a thesis using it in college by his own report (at least that's what I recall). So here's a question, what did he use of his work? Did he use creative philosophy behind HGS? Did he explain the story of HGS? How did he get HGS there, but also not have properly set story? If the project means a lot to you, you should definitely have something right? I mean, I had time to focus on my character and properly get him set where I can realistically appreciate his existence to me where he's not a flat self indulgence character, but a character that I can see others liking to an extent because he's not flatly the good guy, he's just his own philosophy. With HGS, I just see that they're flatly the good guys, and the philosophy underneath is just how the creators feel about things without wanting critiques to them. To me that writing isn't thought out or constructed in a manner to last, even Romeo and Juliet have glaring issues, but even then it's a long standing love story for a reason. It's not perfection, frankly the whole situation is a bit whack, but we all know the story for a good reason, the story is behind the philosophy that a long standing feud can hurt those you love more than it hurts those you hate. It has a core philosophy that can stand the test of time because it's a testament to human nature and can be interpreted throughout time with nearly the same same philosophy, even in garden gnome movie.
My point is, what is this show's identity? What does it want to be? You don't need to get deep into the human mind just for your philosophy just enough to have an identity, and it's hard to pin it down, even though he used it in a college thesis. Sorry about the ramble, have a good day.

They write massive walls of text in all kinds of messy ways and when you try to respond by breaking it down they’ll then respond mid reply as a way to try and confuse or undermine you, obviously in UA-cam where the character limit isn’t an issue it becomes giant walls of basically unreadable garbage that you then have to risk looking dumb trying to respond to their hot mess of a reply.

They would feel much less stronger/untouchable if people didn't assume a person won an argument when the other people stops replying. In reality, a person might not continue to argue with someone like this because they know that his stance is so poorly founded that it cannot be easily debased (the juice isn't worth the squeeze), or they just understand that the person they're arguing against is resorting to gish-galloping and it would just be a waste of time and energy to try to discredit a manipulator.

    • @AlteredNova04

It's a technique called the Gish Gallop, where they try to overwhelm you with a barrage of bullshit arguments, while refusing to ever concede even a single point, constantly attacking your character to rile you up, and simply changing the subject if you successfully refute them on anything. It's an extremely popular debating strategy among dishonest pseudo-intellectual con artists.

Dude when you said "it's an explanation, not an excuse" it hit me on a spiritual level because I say that a lot because so many people try to deflect like that. Especially when it came to toxic characters where it's like "well they had a troubled past and that's why they're so awful" like fair enough but that doesn't change the fact they're awful or make their bad acts magically disappear. As a trans person myself the "If u criticize this person ur transphobic!!" Makes me fume, not only is it stupid, it basically caters to the people who want to spread the narrative all trans people are 'woke snowflakes incapable of taking criticism'
Especially aggravating when someone in the trans community uses it to defend THEMSELF from accountability because it just,, to try and put it as nicely as possible,,, is just so violently twitter it hurts.
Genuine criticism isn't transphobic, if it was it wouldn't be valid criticism anymore in result as it would just be straight up attack/harassment.
My main criticism of the show from a queer standpoint is how it "dumbs down" transitioning super badly when Prof. Caraway explains it in show, along with how the show is handling Snapdragon and other queer characters, it treats the audience like they're 3 whenever it explains queer concepts then turns around and has characters referencing inuendos and swearing as if it wasn't sesame street's sh×ty cousin a minute ago.
A criticism of the Fandom I have is that some people in the hate-fanbase are genuinely transphobic, like I've seen pretty nasty comments get made by some people (there was one I remember that was saying some sh¡t like "oh, the magic is experimental? I hope it fails >:)))))))" and other edgy crap) ones that genuinely hated the queer characters because they were queer.
"High guardian spice sucking isn't an excuse to be bigoted" and "criticism of HGS isn't transphobic" are two sentiments that can coexist and do.

With experience i mean more about personal experience than anything, as now adays people make up things when they talk about something they don't understand(take the concept of Chain of Command in any recent Star Trek show, they have NO respect for their superiors and they are never punished for it). Basing stories on things that you learn, investigate and live by yourself leads to a sense of realism.
Creativity is more aligned to the two ideas im basing this up, cause you need to both know stuff and have a motivation in order to come up with ideas for your story, cause you can't experience yourself flight, magic or exploration of space itself, but you can use concepts like actual mythologies, science and story for such things. You most be able to not just make up concepts and ideas, but also make them make sense in its setting, otherwise they may come up as generic or confusing.
And Inspiration requires you to care about what you're doing and to try to express it to others. What you write must be something you care about and would like others to experience too, otherwise it may come up as generic if not confusing(take High Guardian Spice as a good example of a uninspired show trying to fill some check boxes more than tell an story).

It's pretty clear that the person making these bad faith arguments is someone who's really insecure over a progressive LGBTQ+ showrunner being criticised. But, you got to set aside your biases and look at things for what they are.
Look it Lilly Orchard for eaxmple. She's a trans woman cartoon commentator channel, who's infamous for being controversial, confrontational and very forgiving of woke writing. When this show was first announced, she was actively defending it and labelled anyone who trashed the trailer as sexist bigots. So, years later, when the show finally came out, you'd think she'd sing praises about it, but that could not have been further from the truth. She swallowed her pride and admitted that the show was trash, no matter how badly she wanted to stick it to the haters and attack anime fans, she just couldn't do it. She gave it a fair chance and reviewed it for it's own merits. She even ended her review begrudgingly wishing it had been better, because she believed that the backlash was still unwarranted, including all these type of video essays.
So, if someone like that, who this show was practically made for, can set aside their biases and admit it's problems, maybe, just maybe, criticising agaisnt HGS isn't entirely about the creator's orientation.

Also with the budget excuse. One Punch Man is also a great example of how writing is nearly NEVER affected.
I read the original web series. And he started OPM with NO BUDGET. And he was doing the project AS A HOBBY.
But people loved it so much that even a professional Mangaka, who is the one that's currently making the serialized version of the series, became a fan.
ONE's drawing make High Guardian Spice's look like a master piece. But his writing is SO WELL DONE it created the series we know and love today.

I do dislike how these sort of comments try to say: "You're criticizing this because it's made by (insert minority groups here)." because that's implying that these groups are too gentle and infantile to be considered like any other show runner. Patronizing, is it not? Maybe instead of focusing on the LGBT aspects, Jim Light, why don't you, I don't know...LOOK at the source material and seek out other people's positive opinions of the show. Oh wait, that would imply you actually cared to do any research on the subject instead of another youtuber's opinion. Which everyone here knows that you don't.
If people want to have a discussion about why this show is in their opinion, "good" or "misunderstood because of budget", etc. Then by all means, make that argument. However, bringing up baseless accusations that the person arguing against a show is because they're "-ist" will immediately make that opinion invalid of any proper critique and will make you look like a twat 14 year old girl on Twitter trying to defend and coddle a group that just wants to have better representation in the popular media. (Sidenote: You often never see these types of comments when it comes to good representation in actual good shows like The Owl House)

Sounds like Jim was trying to be a white knight for a 'marginalized creator'. It's kind of weird that he knew enough about HGS to know that Raye is a trans man but didn't also see that the majority of the staff are women? You could've been a misogynist, too!
What kind of kills me about that attitude is that, as far as I've seen, you've always focused your critique on the contents of the show itself. You aren't dragging creators out and specifically berating them for their decisions and making it personal, you're discussing the merits (and lack thereof) of the end product. If you were regularly shouting about Raye Rodriguez or calling out writers it would be one thing but it's just "Here's a show, this is why it's not working".

Sorry you have to deal with the whole " you have to like it because" group. As I have said to many friends of mine, if a show, book, movie trailer, whatever it is can't peak my interest and keep it then I don't owe anything to it.
This mentality is just laziness at it's core in both not wanting to strive for their best or wanting to improve. They just want praise for anything and everything they do. I wonder if the same people who use this same argument would let it hold up if someone gave them a literal dog turd as a presentation for a meal.🤦🏿‍♀️

But, one problem with 15:55 - japanese animators are CRIMINALLY underpaid and overworked. A fulltime japanese animator could easily earn as little as 700$ PER MONTH. THATS how those budgets look like that! About HGS; if only there was a method for figuring out a script and planning shots ahead of time that costs almost nothing for the writer/director to employ.....

On some level a creator is partially responsible for their comment section. TRO made a great video about Dream in which he discusses that topic at one point. However curbing hate against another random show is not your responsibility. And it should be common sense for everyone not to go harassing people so that's not your fault either. This commenter's arguments were weak at best and downright stupid and nonsensical at worst. As you said you do not encourage hate against the creators. And that level of responsibility really only falls onto a creator when they start getting millions of fans and standomship. That's when they become responsible imo. Not some niche but good youtuber talking about a random terrible show.
I hope my comment made sense lol. It's late where I am

I'd just like to say I find writing critique videos like yours make me critically think back to my own writing to see if I've made similar mistakes/fallen into similar traps. Knowing where others have went wrong whereas others have succeeded helps you to grow as a writer yourself. I think this guy was still just mad about She-ra critiques years back, and your videos 'triggered' that anger/annoyance 'cause I guess the show kinda looks like She-ra with the really bright colors and LGBT representation.
Oh, also, really great example of story and characters reeling people in despite poor animation quality: The Dragon Prince season 1 with its sometimes laughable choppy animation. There's one scene in particular I still can't help but laugh, even though I'm supposed to cry. And yet, it was still a hit, got 2 more seasons, and is expected to have a total of 7 seasons with the 4th coming this year.

No, shut up. That's NOT how the real world works. Not every comment about a piece of fiction or work of art has to be positive. It's okay to be negative about these things. It's okay to criticize things. How else will things improve?
Some people seriously need to learn that.

I remember the old days before social media, when we didn’t generally know jackshit about the creators of a show, unless we happened to catch an interview on Entertainment Tonight or read an article in TV Guide. There wasn’t this “follow along every step of the way on Instagram as we create the show and also here are a bunch of details about my personal life!”
I’m not saying times were better back then, we just had more of an opportunity to look at the WORK and not bring (whatever personal issues the creator may be dealing with) into it. The way it is now, the creator is almost as important as what they’ve created, there’s really very little separation. So of course there will be fans (or non-fans) jumping to ludicrous conclusions.

Fixing errors on traditional animation or cel animation is far more time consuming than animation on modern computers. With modern computers, it can be done in few minutes versus traditional which can take days to weeks to fix. Back then, it's more understandable when you don't have enough time to fix every issue. Today's modern technology, there's no excuse.
In the end, it all comes down to talent, not budget.

When Raye Rodriguez came out on Twitter and said high guardian spice failed due to the budget really irked me. Budget really? Ok let's say roughly your minimum cost for a hgs episode is 275k. Here's 2 things you could have done. (I'm not saying I could do these things better I'm just giving off my opinion and ideas)
    1. Have better story boards or find better story boarders. If your story boards are shit then so will be the animation in return. Everything should have impact whether it's fighting, dynamic posing, framing, and objects that are being interacted with.
    2. Sacrifice/Revise your writing - self explanatory really but I'll give examples of each using episode 1 and give my take on how I would have done things.
~Revise - the whole journey to lyngarth
~Sacrifice - everything else. (Ok hear me out the episode is literally called the journey to lyngarth yet only 8 minutes is actually getting to lyngarth while the rest is just filler trying to lead to the next episode because they actually wrote themselves into a corner)
My take: the episode starts off with Rosemary and Sage waving goodbye to their love ones leaving pebble to go on their journey to lyngarth. Now that the city is out of sight Sage says “leaving our home for the first time. I Never thought this day would come.” giving off a sad look to which Rosemary says “ sometimes being a guardian we have to leave something behind we cherish. My mom taught me that.” giving sage a cheesy smile. after reaching the coach stop the dwarf conductor asks Rosemary and Sage for their tickets for only Sage to have hers but Rosemary forgotten hers at home. Instead of separating the girls decide to ride sage's broom to the train station and guide themselves with a map sage kept in chompy if events like this was to happen . After flying for so long Sage's broom ends up losing power and the girls have to walk on foot. Sage states that her broom should be working again giving it time to recharge itself. After walking long enough it starts to get dark to which Rosemary comes to the idea they camp out for the night to which Sage freaks out saying “ Rosemary, we can't just camp out here! There could be monsters out here!” to which Rosemary says “ relax sage it's just for one night nothing more and by the morning we should be at the train station in no time” after calming down sage uses her magic to make a fire while rosemary pulls out some meat from her backpack for sage to say “ you packed meat? Why?” rosemary then says “ you'll never know when backpack meat will come in handy” after cooking the meat you can hear a rustle in the leaves. Sage starts freaking out again but Rosemary pays no mind and keeps eating. The rustling gets louder and louder than a giant wild beast on all 4s pops out of the bushes growling getting ready to attack. Sage stands up startled, frozen unable to move while Rosemary quickly gets up and pulls out her sword and stares down the beast. The beast lunges at sage but Rosemary jumps in the way for the beast to only bite her arm in the process. It goes in again for another attack but lunges for Rosemary. She manages to dodge but her locket is ripped off of her neck. And is now In the beasts mouth. Rosemary without hesitation lunges at it and stabs it killing it with one stab. She retrieves her locket and opens it not for the audience to see but her to see giving a smile indicating what's ever in there is alright. After fixing the locket and putting it back around her neck she falls to her knees and winces at the pain and grabs her now bloodied arm. Sage finally snaps out of her frozen state rushing to Rosemary's aid trying to heal her and says “ Rosemary I'm sorry! I didn't mean to...” Rosemary cuts her off to say “aye it happens. We're soon to be guardians in training. We're bound to shake with fear sometimes” Rosemary gives sage a painful chuckle and they spend the rest of the night in the forest until dawn. Hours pass and Rosemary with her now bandaged arm and sage ends up at the train station to which the scene that normally plays out when they cut the line. (Instead of having old and new magic be Sage's thing I have her goals to be overcoming her fears and worries which will work better into the plot when they go on missions at school) they arrive at the city during the day to only be greeted by a worried Anise and Aloe and explain their story. They go home, They unpack and the final scene before the episode ends rosemary opens the window like In episode one but instead of saying we're here like in the original. She grabs her locket, opens it, and looks at it to only be a picture of her mom. She smiles and roll credits. Thought of this in 5 minutes.
Fuck it I'm gonna make a high guardian spice comic and rewrite it my way
