    Sports coaches aren't at the top of their game anymore, but they can share their knowledge about how to get to the top. It's natural for technique to slip as time is spent teaching and not practicing as much as before. But the key thing is to be good at sharing your knowledge about how to advise others to get to the top when you're teaching.

      Being able to laugh at yourself, especially when it comes to music, is such a great way to put things into perspective! It's just music, so if we mess up, it's not the end of the world ;)

      JustAnotherFlutist Thank you for replying back to me, as it has seriously made my week. Any ideas on how to find the "sweet spot" on a new flute? I've just upgraded to a Miyazawa 202 from my Trevor James student flute, and I'm struggling to find the "sweet spot"; but when I was trying it out I had no problem playing it. I know it's a strange question to ask. I love your channel and I can happily binge watch it for hours xx

    I appreciate your honesty to admit what most if not all teachers that are teaching advanced students experience. I have friends that are college math professors. They readily admit to having students that are smarter than they are. I think regardless of how proficient we may be if we expand our universe of students we eventually run into the situation where we find a student with skills that rivals those of the teacher. It's a challenge to manage our ego in those situations.

    HI "Justanotherflutist". It was such a pleasure to hear you speak on this subject. I love your style of presentations and I especially love your honesty. I'm an older player (68 yr old amature). I have played most of my life and as long as I can remember, what you have just described so eloquently has always been my mortal enemy. When I set in a flute section I try to have confidence in myself but I always listening and depending on others for entrances or technical passages etc... I've used a strategy of sitting on the left side of my co-flutist so I don't rely on them as much. But, then I worry that they will hear my mistakes; Lord, what viscous cycle. My last conductor told my that I was my own worst enemy and after all these years I believe it. I'm not pushing DRUGS but my doc suggested Xanax for this performance anxiety. It has helped plus with years of just living, I just care a bit less what others think of my playing. You just realize where "flute" fits in in a larger scheme of thigs (proprties) I do it now just for fun and to keep my brain active. Again, thanks for being just a wonderfully honest your lady and not being a DIVA #%tch. OOOPS, did I say that; I meant to say a sociopath who specializes in passive-aggressive statements and micro-aggression! We've all know them! Love listening to you and learning from you. Thanks. PS I do have a flute question for you but will save that for another time.

    Such a cool question to ask. I kinda felt the same all through university. Didn't teach much, but when I did have the opportunity, the temptation to look good was always there. The feeling never goes away, but sometimes it helps you to discover what is really praiseworthy in your own technique and sound. It is so personal because the flute seems to become an extension of who we are, its not just a tool we manipulate. I'm in social media, so my flute get pulled out every few days - sad really. Really cherish the opportunity to continue playing and learning from people like you!

    Last year I was part of an auditioned symphony orchestra which only had two flutists. Although I was playing second flute, the gap between my ability and first flute was just so enormous, it killed my confidence in playing. I dropped out of the orchestra this year as I need a break, but the experience has motivated me to work on improving more before I attempt to audition again.

  • @NoodleyBits
    @NoodleyBits 7 років тому +8

    Every week at rehearsal I ask myself that question. My second flutist plays much better than I do (it's her choice to play 2nd) and at every rehearsal I hear her play fast runs, uber high notes (where I still need to check a fingering chart), grace notes almost flawlessly and I'm still trying to work them out at a snail's pace. By performance time though, I've usually gotten it :)

    • @chance5073
      @chance5073 7 років тому +1

      I think that's just a difference between players. Some people are naturally attuned to playing technically well, while others expressively well. I'm more on the expressive side and so I usually feel like I have to work 10 times harder than everyone else on runs. But by the time a performance comes, I can usually play it all the best because of my hard work. Just keep practicing and remember that no one is perfect and you can only be the best that you can be :)

      I'm so thankful that we're a small community band. We don't do chair assignments or auditions, when we get new music I usually get the first and piccolo parts and she gets the seconds, but occasionally we'll have a song where I have a lot of problem with the first part and we'll switch. This past Christmas we did "Cantique de Noel" and she took the first part because it was one of her favorites, and I just couldn't get the timing right. We also have a warm up book where I play the 2nd part because the notes are too small for her to see very well (Most of my band are retired people, I'm 49 and one of the youngest members).

    Funny story, when I was in college I had a music class and the final exam was to play "When the Saints Go Marching In" on the piano. Normally I would not have a problem with that because it's an easy song to play. Unfortunately we were given sheet music to play it from. Seeing that I can't sight read, when I was in the practice room, what I was playing sounded nothing like the song. If the saints heard what I was doing they would have been marching out. Luckily, one day I was in the practice room when one of my classmates was practicing the song. Once I heard how it was supposed to go my problem was solved. I took the exam with the sheet music in front of me but I was playing purely by ear. I got an A.

    When I start asking myself that very question, I make myself remember the little things about technique or tone or whatever that I had problems with a few years ago but are not an obstacle today. That way I know that in the same way I improved, I will also be able to play something I consider difficult now.

    I ask myself a slightly different question. I usually ask myself "how would I sound if I played that?". I play piccolo 75% of the time, so I do wonder how I would sound on some of the flute solos. I did, however, recently get to play the big flute solo in William Tell in one of the community bands I play in. So it's funny that you mentioned that solo. You are right, it's been way too hot in the Seattle area (I'm on the north end).

    I never really participated in studio classes because where I went for my undergrad, they didn't offer flute studio class but when I first met the teacher I studied with the last two years of my Bachelors, the dean set up a mini masterclass with her. About a year and a half later, I played for Bart Feller ( I played the second movement of the Poulenc Sonata for him while my sister played excerpts for him) and then last summer I went to Tennessee and played for William Bennett ( My sister played the Bach b minor sonata and I played Piazzolla Tango Etude No.3). At New World, where I did the rest of my undergrad I had a lot of competition but despite that My orchestra director would put me in every concert( there were about ten of us between the high school and college divisions combined) because he was enamored with my piccolo playing. My piano teacher since he was the only person who accompanied all the instrumentalists ( the other staff pianists would accompany all the singers) so he would have his hands full when it came to playing with people for juries but in my case, he was more than willing to play with me because he was already familiar with my work ethic and he knew that I practiced a lot😃❤️🎼🎹

    • @kiaraeijo
      @kiaraeijo 7 років тому

      I would also like to add that for a long time (still do sometimes), I have felt inferior to my colleagues because I was mostly self-taught and I didn't have the same opportunities that they did. I ended up losing respect for my college band director because he had favoritism towards people who weren't good, would not treat him with respect and did not have the best work ethic

    Sometimes I get overwhelmed when Im the only one who has to play a part and I realize theres no way I can play it. I've been playing in various pit orchestras for musicals for about a year now in my community and some of the reed parts that are mostly flute are brutally difficult. Right now im doing reed 1 in Beauty and the Beast and I can honestly say that the flute parts are so difficult it makes Iberts flute concerto feel like hot cross buns in comparison. Problem is im the only one playing the part so theres no one I can ask for help, I cant take the book home and practice because there are subs for other shows. I just take one look at some of these parts and im just like "nope" lol.

    As a professional mathematician that was teaching private lessons, I cannot but agree with you: it seems the same is happening in math. Sometimes I figure out that I can solve a problem (that students are supposed to do as a homework) only
    1. with the help of looking through the literature and adapting a way more advanced methods to the given problem,
    2. after a sleepless night and lots of coffee,
    3. with the help of colleagues that have taught a similar course a year ago.

    Hi JAF, I love your channel because you help me with my flute training with these vids and your flute reviews are so honest and awesome. I need to play fast piece called g major sigfrid karg-elert op. 107/9, and idk how to practice it to get to my goal. I have only been playing flute for three months and so i was forced to cram everything and learn fast but the idea of me playing this fast piece even when im learning how to still play the flute and get everything as well as the highschool students is terrifying. My mom bought me a flute from the pawn shop and told me to learn how to play it because she wants me to play it in highschool, in middle school i played tuba so the embouchure was not really a problem. My mom was told by my band teacher that i can learn to play any instrument i wanted to, which my mom took too literally which was why she got me the flute. She hated the tuba because it took up so much space and time that she was tired of it which is also why she wants me to play flute. We dont really have that much money so i camt pay for flute lessons so youtube is all iv got, and your on youtube so😊. Anyways i need help with the song on how to practice it and what i should learn in order to play it please and thank you. ☺

    Honestly, I hope my teacher never feels this way because she's an actual like flute goddess in my mind. But I completely relate as far as being a student playing next to other students. I think it forces me to make goals about my playing that, when other people hear them, make me seem elitist or egotistic. It was such a difficult situation because I was made the principle chair of my university wind ensemble after only playing flute for two years, while the other flutists had been playing basically half of their life. I'm even more scared about this because next year, I'll be the upperclassman playing around just a bunch of really talented freshman. Anyway! I hope that you can overcome this personality trait and share your story so that maybe I can overcome mine.

    Hi! I love your videos. Wish more flautists made videos like this! I am studying at university and occasionally get beginner students wanting lessons. I find it really hard to explain to people how to play. Not only was it a long time ago that I was in their position so I find it hard to teach them how I learnt, but also I find it hard when people just don't get it. I can just do it!! Do you have any tips for teaching beginners or how I can explain things easier? Or am I just not cut out to teach!! Thanks

    I've had such kind of question in all kind of works I've done in my life, but I ended being pragmatic quite early too, so instead of asking myself "Wait, can I do that?" I asked me "Wait, should I do that?" implying in that question I "will do" it and not wasting time in "could I...?" but in "how could I do if I have to...?"

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  7 років тому

      You know, the perception of our ears versus what we actually play sometimes don't line up. I've found that I have a tendency to exaggerate what I hear in a recording (or what my friends or teachers just played) when I play it myself. It takes some detective work with a metronome and very close observation to figure out exactly how fast or slow someone is playing something!

  • @16rockhist
    @16rockhist 7 років тому

    Hello! I've never actually replied to a UA-cam video before, but this video has inspired me to join the conversation. I am also a professional flutist and teacher and struggled with self doubt, still do, in fact. I try to hold this idea in my head while teaching advanced students: it is appropriate and necessary for them to develop my level of playing proficiency. As their teacher it is my job to get them to that level and if they get there then I've done my job well. However, they will not, certainly while they are in high school or in another professional line of work, reach my level of experience before they leave my studio. As a musician constantly involved in your own professional development you will easily outstrip your students in terms of experience and therefore have something to offer. Good luck!

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  7 років тому

      Big hugs! I was honestly pretty nervous about making this video, but I felt that because this channel is about being transparent as a musician that it would be dishonest of me to never talk about this issue. I agree with you! Our job as teachers is the develop the next generation of musicians that will ultimately surpass us and help evolve the music community. :)
