As soon as they said her power changed to shifting into different realities i think this is a completely different Max from our Max from LIS 1. That's the easiest way to not piss off fans no matter what ending they picked. It's what they did with Deadpool and Wolverine recently and it worked. It doesn't ruin the past if you just say this is a different variate of the character
I doubt that. First of all I don't really think it's a stretch that Max' powers have changed and there is a lot of room for them to explore that, to explore the meaning behind the powers and I think they've already said that this is a focus in the game. But more importantly we are dealing with a story that revolves around multiple timelines and versions of people. This is more present in this game, but also in the first one. We can have a different version of Max, but I highly doubt if that's the case this version will not be connected to the first version at all. There has to be crossover because that's what the story is about. The original Max has to be involved somehow, either we play as her or she will show up in some other way. The story is too interconnected with it's timelines to have a completely separate version of Max with no connection to the first game and it'd be really disappointing if they did that
I mean, this did happen in the 2018 comic series. I personally am SUPER excited to see if they go this angle with crossing over back n forth like they did in the first game :)
loved this video - i feel really similarly about max's characterisation, really looking forward to seeing how they keep max's core personality, while giving her a bit more confidence and experience - the only thing I worry about is that Max's character is so connected to her trauma - leaving Arcadia, seeing the effect William's death had on Chloe, even the stuff in the Dark Room. It's impossible to truly have Double Exposure be a standalone experience, where Max just happens to be the protagonist - there's so much to her life that shapes her as a person. I'll also be interested to see how they handle the obvious discussion around how Max ended up at Caledon in both realities - whether it was for the same reasons or not. Let's not forget - William's death influenced Max's entire friend group at Blackwell, the type of person she was, and her confidence levels - I don't really buy the idea that Max would end up as the exact same person 9 years after both of the game's two endings.
I would love a life is strange game. Where all of the protagonist come together. Maybe in Mexico. To discuss, their experiences, and what it could all mean. And the best way to use their gifts to make a positive impact on the world. Or the other protagonist seek out Max. For answers. Since it began with her.
Cool to see somebody else is interested in this concept. It's an idea I've been kicking around, too. A new character perhaps has to go seek out Alex Chen, Daniel Diaz, and of course, Max Caufield, because he needs their help to stop something big. I really loved the impending tornado which gave the first game so much of its tension, that just seemed to be missing from the sequels. I'd love something big like that again.
@anthonysava1769 Sean and Daniel meet David in the last episode of LiS2, so there's one connection there but under what circumstances they would meet is another question
I really feel like Max saying "Sometimes you reach the destination alone and that's okay." is actually her quoting someone she cares about. I've been thinking about this since the 18 min game play came out. I have a strong feeling it's either Chloe or Joyce depending on your end choice.
I like playing with the idea of this being an alternate version of the Max that chose between the two endings, but i haven't analysed the trailers and footage that intensely. It would give the developers an easy way to explain why things are different and to maybe not canonise either ending as that wouldn't sit well with anyone, i think anything like that is best avoided.
Very good video, Ola! To this point, every dialogue and interaction I have seen in the promotional Double Exposure material I am very pleased with how Max is being portrayed (Of course, the biggest credit of this goes to Hannah Telle - the person who has the most experience with the character of Max out of the entire Deck Nine department) And Hannah certainly helped with directing Max's the same way Ashly Burch did for Chloe in Before the Storm. And I think Max is the only protagonist whose return will actually work. Sean and Alex did their part, and in Alex's case her story ended on a very good note no matter what you choose while Sean's is highly determined on what you chose. So I am very positive about her return ^^
As long as we see the core of max in the game, i think it will be more than ok. Lets think about ourselves we were not the same person when we were teenagers but we still carry the same core i believe. And i hope we will understand why her power changed like this. as you said, in games powers are not just powers, there is always hidden meaning in it. If we understand this, i think we will see max more clear. On the other hand, i still believe that we will see cloe in another/parallel universe in the game 😅 Thank you for the video 💃
Only two things have changed. Her power, and she is more confident and comfortable with herself. I don't understand why everyone is calling her a completely different character. This isn't say Legends Lara Croft to Survivor Lara Croft.
Is it possible that you may do a LIS2 style decision at the front of the game to decide some small details between the two timelines? My very first thought is that one timeline would be where we save Arcadia Bay, and the other one (with our new friend alive) would be Arcadia Bay destroyed :3!
I didn't even watch the video, just came to yap because I'm not done talking about that first 30min gameplay video. The way Max reacted to finding her new friend's body was way too toned down for what I expected after the true ending. Even if she has had time to process all her emotions about everything that happened, all the pain she went through, seeing someone close to her die in the same manner AGAIN right in front of her AGAIN would be a trigger nonetheless. She should have collapsed on the floor, she should have cried in desperation and said "not you, too", she could have even gone non-verbal and watched as her other friend tried to deal with the situation. That little puny tear was nothing. No one would react like that.
It's a tricky thing - trying to show a Max who feels like she's had the experience and feels the emotional weight of the previous game, without being too reliant on exposition or callbacks. It will be difficult but I think it can be done. I just hope Deck Nine handle Max better than they did and the end of Farewell...I'll explain. We knew Max left and didn't contact Chloe for 5 years. But we didn't know she left right after William's funeral. That makes it worse and that's thanks to Deck Nine. There was no need for that detail other than to make Max look worse to the player. Yes you can argue it adds to Max's guilt when she comes back, but for me the extra detail is just unnecessary. That's why Deck Nine needs to do right by Max and give her the happy ending she deserves - with Chloe if you saved her. Okay, rant over. 😉
Trying to look for a happy ending in a game that literally tells you "You can't save everyone" is a little bit of wasted effort. If you save Chloe more than half the town dies, including Chloe's mother. If you sacrifice, Chloe Max has the burden of knowing, but being powerless to stop it. LiS, as a series, comes across as more of a game about reality than happy endings.
@@ViperPilot16 I get your point and usually I'd agree - the Life is Strange series is not about happy endings. However, I think this entry could be the exception. This is the second, and unless Deck Nine plan on restructuring the series, I assume it's the last time we'll be playing as Max. We've spent time with her and know her. Whatever the details, I think Deck Nine knows that after spending this much time with Max, fans will be expecting/hoping for a somewhat more positive outcome than some other LIS games. Also, Deck Nine are facing a lot of criticism, getting the original series protagonist's story ending wrong or ending it on a less than positive note might not bode well for the future of the franchise.
My feeling is that Max winding up in Vermont is predicated on losing Chloe somehow. It's my fanfic author mind trying to fill in the gap between the games, and yes, I will be coming up with something.
She is 28. She is definitely a more realized version of herself. I love the fact that she is still Max but with harder skin and stronger vigor. I do feel a bit of confusion around the whereabouts of past characters like Chloe and the others. Ten years is a long time. A lot of inner change is bound to happen. Being that it would be ten years ago up that point, a lot probably changed since then, and it isn't uncommon for people in life to not be as close as they once were, drift away, find other things, not spend as much time together as they would, and so forth. I am a bit of a loner in this. I don't really feel very strong about the ships in these games. Chloe is a fun character, I love her to bits, I relate to her a lot, though I have been around a lot of Chloe-esque types of people. Mostly the butterflies fade away. It can be not as pleasant as it seems in fiction. Maybe in the game, there is something the happens in both endings. I feel like other than the armies of Pricefield and Grahamfield, the true relationship and ship Max really subconsciously works on, and I think the Life is Strange games are really focused on is the relationship with herself. Everything else are merely people, places, or things in her life that mold her into what we see in this game. Max learns how to be the more realized person in that her traits are now beacons of her strength. It is nice that her introversion and deep conscientious nature are now fully realized rather than things that in the previous game, seemed to hold her back at times. I can't wait for this game. LIS games have a vibe that is super unique and indie that it really makes you want to slow down and think about the paths we choose.
I am hopeful for a great game but skeptical and hesitant. I like Max in the first game and from the trailers and such, she does seem different, but people do change as they grow up. She seems like Max to me from what I've seen but I could be wrong. Great video as always Ola.
