Thank you, I love tube amps but the entry level for DIY stuff was to high. This is step by step paint by numbers for beginners and that is what I need.
Do the tube recs still hold three years later? I see some people highly recommending JJ E83CC which is a new frame grid tube modeled after Tesla/Teslovak E83CC.
I loved your video ! Before i get one of these PCBs, I was asking myself if these designs come with a delay to ensure voltage is applied to heater before plates... I did not recognize it on the schema. Also, is there a protection not to blow up the power amplifier that will come behind it with 200V in case something does wrong? It's a pleasure watching your videos! Sincerely, Fabi
That's not an issue with small signal tubes. And the devices downstream are protected by the output cap, just make sure you use high quality film caps :)
Also, i have seen a bunch of videos explaining the importance of having noise filters and high end power cables to avoid interferences from power grids, so, it does matter having some of these noise filters and expensive power cables??
Awesome video. Thank you. I was wondering if there is a way to put output RCA socket at the back or at least on the side? Having output RCA sockets at the front makes RCA signal cable going out front and back of turntable. It means the cable needs to go either going over tubes or either side of chassis and back to turntable. Sorry for mumbling and hope it makes sense. Nonethelss, great video and thoroughly enjoyed watching...
I located them up front to get them and their unshielded wiring far away from any AC noise. Plus my setup, the preamp is behind the turntable so it made sense for me. I do think running external shielded cables to the front, where you can distance them from the transformer and AC wiring, is better than trying to run them internally within inch of that stuff. For some folks it might make sense to put them on the top? Anyway, that's part of the fun of DIY, you can do it how you want :)
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Totally makes sense. I will try to figure out how to configure my set up with phono pre having input jack at the front without twisting wires too much :)
Good informative video. I built one of these during lockdown. It was my first build in over 25 years of neglected diy audio lol. Unfortunately I've been put off with the fact of hum. Built using 2 boxes, twisted ac wires, and the original components, bypass capacitors on the valves and using a toroidal TX. Connected an SUT for MC inside the box and use an Audio Technica AT33ptg/ii. Unfortunately, I had hum and still do. but put up with it as the sound was really good. But then with not using it for a few weeks, came back to using it and distortion. Such a shame, as it sounded good, but has put me off valve audio. Have you done the other video on this yet ?
I got behind due to work but plan to get back on this soon! I wonder if the SUT is picking up hum from something? I honestly have avoided MC carts due to this sensitivity and honestly the AT VM540ML MicroLine sounds so good, I haven't even considered going to MC. Not sure where the distortion you are getting is from.
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Thank you for replying, much appreciated. I've used an at630 SUT into my amplifier and that's ok. I've only wired the phono for MC, even though I have put extra RCA's for MM. I didn't wire it, partly because of laziness and I don't have an MM Cartridge. Was thinking of purchasing a Goldring 1042. I have an old turntable, Ariston RD80 with Audio Technica AT1120 Tone Arm. I've Always wondered how much I need to spend on a new modern turntable to better what I have.
I bought an extra board/kit about 9 months ago, people asking just made me decide to do it :) I want to use good caps and good metal film resistors, plus work on my lead dress + layout, and see if I can get rid of the little bit of hum the first one I built has.
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Yas, all of your plans for improvement make sense. Do they sell just the board, no parts, so that the user can stuff it with whatever level parts they want? I looked it up but did not find the same board that you showed in your video. FYI, multi pin xlr's are used for umbilical cords quite often. But I guess you know that. My rane thx eq uses phone cord which seems very cheap.
www.partsconnexion.com/ is a good place to get some higher end parts. These are the coupling caps I like. www.partsconnexion.com/capacitors-film-mundorf-evo-aluminum-oil.html
It’s so good to see what there kits are really like and how they can be improved.
I'm glad I found your channel your a genius
Welcome aboard!
Omg i was waiting for this build :)
This preamp sounds amazing, you can find the kits on ebay for under $50.
great build i just built my valve phono

Lovely DIY videos, what values for the choke that I don't see them on kit? Thx
The board lists a 20H 20ma, a Hammond 154E is perfect for this.
Oh dear... you have got me making this now!
You will love it!
I made a tube linestage and used a IEC connector and the end of a computer power cable to connect a power supply and preamp. B+, 6v DC and gnd

I'm still using the EH7025 tubes in these.

Tune in for next Monday's Monologue. I'm gonna have fun with this topic: Audiophile cables!

Did you swap the sockets if they're plastic? (thinking capacitance)
The kit comes with ceramic sockets.
Which Power Transformer you're using? Thx
A Hammond 269AX, the complete BOM and schematic is here:

Could you recommend a MC cartridge tube kit similar to what you have . Great information as always 😊
Almost everything I have read says to use a quality step up transformer. Those are $$$ and why I have personally stuck with MM carts.
What’s the cost of the build using the best parts for it?
I'll post the BOM with parts prices after I get it built :)
Is this available as a kit? If so, where?
I got the "kit" off Ebay, I ended up basically just using the board and replacing all the parts so would recommend getting just the bare board.
Where do you get the better caps like the mudorf?
