Paper, especially my daughter’s art work and school papers are a tough category for me. Also, my pantry (food). Between the pandemic and stores having empty shelves, to a winter storm here in Texas that also left our the store shelves empty (twice in a one year span), I’ve started borderline hoarding pantry items. I need inspiration to stop buying more and use up what we have, while still saving enough for emergency situations.
I have been watching you for a long time and I just want to mention that the quality and content of your videos has changed remarkably and although you were very inspiring before and great I am just so impressed with your current format. Love the beginner/pro tip feature on this one❤️
Aw thank you so much Dani for this wonderful compliment!!! I work really hard on my videos, so it's really nice to hear the improvements are noticeable :) Thank you so much for your support all this time, have a wonderful day!
I really loved the tips on how to decluttter books. The last time I went through my books I got rid of a bunch of them that I had not read that I didn’t think that I ever would read. It felt wonderful letting go of the guilt that I felt every time I started reading something else instead of my “to read” pile that I was avoiding. Next time I go through my book, though, I am going to use your system. It is nice and simple and to the point. I love your hair. It really has been looking amazing in your videos!
Thanks for sharing! As a teacher, I always kindly suggest to people who may have any school supplies (e.g. paper, pens, craft items, books, etc.) can be dropped off at schools near by for any teachers or students who may be in need of items. I promise you those items will always be put to use. ;-)
Thank you for not just telling people to throw the stuff out !!! so many people say to just get rid of it and throw it out.. please no one just dump stuff in the garbage. you can make so much money back by selling the items first. if it doesn't sell then I donate it.
I agree, first we can see if we can give the items a second life with someone else. :) For me, thinking of ways I have to put effort in disposing an item later, will also make me think extra before purchasing something :)
Hi Vera, how are you? I love these two level decluttering videos. Sometimes I feel in control, other times I feel like I'm living through an episode of 'Hoarders'!! 😛😛 I don't remember whether I told you this already, but a few months ago I went through Spotify to check if my albums were on there. Any that were, I put into a pile. Then I passed them on to a woman in my WhatsApp giveaway group. Her husband has dementia and she planned to play them to him. It felt wonderful to pass on to someone for a really meaningful reason such as that. My VHS tapes are giving me a headache, though! Here in England, you can send off for a container to fill and then have recycled, but it costs a lot of money. Therefore, they are still sitting in a box in my home! Have a great weekend. x
Hi hi! I'm doing well, how's it going with you? I love that you have them away to someone who can use them and with such a meaningful reason. Also, I didn't know recycling those things is expensive in England... that's kind of a shame because it might deter people from doing it...
@@SimpleHappyZen I'm well, thanks! Generally, recycling is carried out by each council and the cost is covered by our council tax. But you can't recycle certain things such as plastic bags, textiles, batteries and lightbulbs. There are separate (free) places to dispose of these. But more niche things like VHS tapes are a challenge. x
Thank you, Vera ! So helpful ! I did purge a few things from the skin & hair care & make up category recently. Felt good ! Hmm ... maybe I could make another pass thru that ! Books are definitely always something I will have a lot of XD I have some DVDs that I am not sure what to do with (I may see if I can sell them). Good tip on the skincare! Sale doesn't mean "gotta have it".
I loved the idea of having a box for jewelry and limiting yourself to things that fit in it! I will do this. I tidied my room a little by putting the products for the handmade soaps I make in boxes organizers. But there is still a lot to eliminate. But I will!
I’m new here and I found you on a day that I really needed to find you. Funny how that works. I am looking so forward to exploring your channel. Have a beautiful day.
I do love function of beauty. A helpful tip with books is that many are available at your local public library in a digital version. I’ve given up a lot of my hard copy books because I can no longer read hard copies especially hardbacks. It’s too painful for my wrists to hold them. So I get most of my books for free digitally and I can keep a list on the library app of all the books I had wanted to read in physical copy but donated.
Moving for me was The best way to deal with too much stuff. After moving once a year for 3 years straight. I was tired of packing and moving the same stuff but, a different year. I got rid of most of my books and DVDs. I always thought if I really miss it I can just buy it again. I have maybe only bought a book I let go of and wanted to read again. There are only maybe 3 movies I might buy again at some point the rest not sorry I let go of. Thanks for the great tips. :)
Thanks so much for your inspiring videos Vera they never fail to inspire me and help me out.. I have implemented a phone basket down the corridor which I love the idea came from your video 😘
I went thru my favourite books - fast reader and a rereader - and then checked against the library/ebook sellers - for those that were available electronically after this research, I just kept those hard copies that were not available elsewhere (and the less than 10 sentimental keepers). Another place to check if they accept media donations is the library. My public library accepts donations of books, CDs and DVDs.
Hello Vera, I love to crochet and make a lot of blankets. I do give a lot away but not everyone likes homemade gifts. My household is like the world's biggest blanket hoarder. Suggestions? I was going to give them all to a local women's shelter but with the pandemic they stopped accepting these types of items.☮️
I follow my favorite local animal shelter on FB and they recently had a photo of donated handmade/crocheted blankets and extra large granny squares. They said the kitties love them. I’m going to round up my crochet projects and give them some more!
Have you ever thought of selling them on Facebook marketplace, or Craiglist, or Etsy? The extra income could help you enjoy your hobby further. Or you can take that profit and donate it. Also, have you ever tried crocheting amigurumis? I do, and they make the perfect donation for Christmas campaign. I have donated beautiful dolls for kids in need, and I am planning on donating some animals too!
@@carolc2574 Hi Carol, I have tried selling on the marketplace and for reasonable prices matter of fact low prices. Lots of thumbs up with likes but no one will purchase. I have tried making the animals but not very good at it.
You’re amazing! This format is so easy to relate to!! I found myself going “huh!” Or “hmmmm” lol great way to provoke thoughts on which system to use for decluttering. What do you suggest for cords without homes? I missed that I think.
Thank you, so happy you found the video helpful :). About cords, what you could do is store them in a special container together (store like items together preferably) and set a time limit. For example, if you don't need them within 6 months, they can be declutterd.
Super tips!
@@SimpleHappyZen Echt, Paula is haar biografie. Daarnaast vind Ik vooral haar eerste fictie boeken geweldig.
Cookbooks... My downfall. But I am in "rehab" when we moved little over two years ago, I got rid of half of my books. ( many were random gifts, or from charity markets that I wanted to help by buying something) And ever since I buy only one max a year or none at all. I also declutter / donate back two or so that I haven't looked at every season , so the pile is still slowly getting slimmer . If I want recepy that I don't have I lookup a couple on the Internet and choose which way to go.
Hi there, thank you! I use Filmora X :) It's still kind of basic in what it can do, but I like it, because it's quite easy to learn. Also, you can find all my gear etc that I use for my videos here: simplehappyzen.com/favorites/
What I still find difficult to declutter is rare collectors items, items that you know you can not easily replace and are sought out by fellow collectors. I have it in one particular field actually: limited edition perfumes from Lush, every year that make a few perfumes that they only bring out once. Its usually from scents that their other products have, like if you have a favourite bathbomb then they will make a perfume from it.😃 I have brought back my collection from 54 perfumes to around 20 already, so thats a good start. The 20 i have now i use and like them all, but there are a few that I secretly still keep just because they are rare. (For example one that is made only once by Lush Japan, in 2015, and it smells like pina colada. 😄 And another one that was only made once by Lush UK in 2007, it smells so strong that I never wear it, its just rare because its so old and difficult to find. I used to have 2 of them 🙈 but sold one already.) And I have sold all my double bottles already, and bottles that I wear less than once a month. Stupid thing is that ofcourse there still áre some of them that I like more than others, but the ones i dont wear often I still am not ready to sell them yet because i know how hard its gonne be to find them again, should i want to.
Ah that's an unusual one! :) I didn't know Lush made perfumes like that. :) I guess a question to ask yourself could be: What's the worst thing that could happen if you get rid of them, and it turns out you can't ever get them again? And why is that a bad thing? Hope that makes sense :) For me, one motivator to strongly decrease my perfume collection is that the scents do deteriorate, and I didn't want to have them long enough for the scent to decrease, making them useless in that sense. Which is why I now love having just 1, using it up, and then getting a new one. But this particular case has a few different layers to it :)
@@SimpleHappyZen Thank you that sounds so… logical, when you put it that way. 😄 I have lived for years and years without them and was perfectly fine, nothing horrible happened haha. And you are right also about the scent changing over time, especially since you use so little of it, one bottle will last for ages. Let alone 20 bottles. 🤪 What I was thinking also: what I like about ‘collecting’ is to find something rare, but actually to find it is the fun part, the owning-part isnt that big of a deal, so once I have found it the item basically has already served its purpose for me. And by now I have found all the ones that I wanted to find already, so I can say sort of say: its complete. These (and some sentimental items) are the items I saved for last in the whole decluttering proces, but now I think this will make it much easier for me to get rid of them. Or at least half of them. (And then again half, and again…) 😉 Thank you Vera! Its so usefull to see your perspective in things like this. 🙂🌸
I love that little jewelry box! I am so ready to reduce the size of my box after decluttering 90% of my jewelry. Any idea where I could acquire a similar box?
I bought one a few years ago. On Amazon. They are called travel jewelry boxes as they have a zipper and are small and safe to carry in your suitcase. Mine was like 10€.
How about school year books? Part of me hates the space they take up, another part of me thinks of them as cool little time capsules of my youth, and maybe my future kids would enjoy looking through them. I definitely feel guilty about wanting to get rid of them 😬
I always have to question if places like Best Buy take used printers because not all donation drop offs take them. In general though, it's good that you promote mindful decluttering as opposed to just dumping everything off at your local Goodwill. We can only take so much...
Thanks Amy! Yes it's good to take a moment to think about which option will have the highest chance someone else will get to use this item, it's not always easy though. :) For me, this makes me think even more carefully before I purchase something new haha
It's a little strange how suddenly some things become popular. I got a lot of VHS movies from someone that I could sell. I was told they had become popular and could get about €5 from each of them. I thought that was a lot, but little did I know I was going to get more for the Pokémon movies I'd been given. So far I've received almost €100 for only Pokémon movies, maybe more. Sometimes you can earn a little bit more. It depends on the market and what the buyer is willing to pay. Collectors items is often worth more.

I feel that there is a lot of repetition in your videos. I do understand that some subjects can run there course (dry up). I've been doing some catch up and I've noticed how repetitive they are. Severn months ago, you said you only need one cardigan, but I've noticed that you have since worn several. You now seem to have a substantial amount of clothing.... I'm confused.
Hi Ann, thank you for sharing your concerns. About the video topics, I sometimes repeat certain things, because I cannot assume that everyone has watched all of my videos. In fact, most people haven't. :) So if something is important to the story, I'll repeat when necessary. However, I've also been exploring several new topics in my videos, which is what I'll always continue to do, for my viewers as well as for myself. With regards to the clothing, I did mention I only own one cardigan in my video with 'Things I only own one of' (originaly posted march 2020) and I still only own that same one cardigan. So that hasn't changed. I do however have a few different options for jumpers (which is why I didn't include jumpers in the 'Things I only own one of' video), because jumpers are my favorite thing to wear. My weight has also fluctuated a bit over the years, so sometimes some of them were too big or too small. So I have a few options there. However, my wardrobe is still quite small. Hope that answers your questions!

What I was thinking also: what I like about ‘collecting’ is to find something rare, but actually to find it is the fun part, the owning-part isnt that big of a deal, so once I have found it the item basically has already served its purpose for me. And by now I have found all the ones that I wanted to find already, so I can say sort of say: its complete.
These (and some sentimental items) are the items I saved for last in the whole decluttering proces, but now I think this will make it much easier for me to get rid of them. Or at least half of them. (And then again half, and again…) 😉
Thank you Vera!

@Barbara Mine was from Samara bags, it's made from vegan materials, I got it for my birthday :)
Books I haven't finished!
I’m still decluttering a lot of things and it’s been years
It can be a long process :) Remember to enjoy it too, and be proud of all the progress you've already made!
How about school year books? Part of me hates the space they take up, another part of me thinks of them as cool little time capsules of my youth, and maybe my future kids would enjoy looking through them. I definitely feel guilty about wanting to get rid of them 😬
where is that little jewelry box from? :)
It's from Samara Bags :) I got it for my birthday
I always have to question if places like Best Buy take used printers because not all donation drop offs take them. In general though, it's good that you promote mindful decluttering as opposed to just dumping everything off at your local Goodwill. We can only take so much...
Thanks Amy! Yes it's good to take a moment to think about which option will have the highest chance someone else will get to use this item, it's not always easy though. :) For me, this makes me think even more carefully before I purchase something new haha
They do. The repair and resell it refurbished or recycle it if it’s not salvageable

@@SimpleHappyZen Thank you Vera. Best wishes.
@@SimpleHappyZen what a lovely response. I love your videos. Thinking about books differently now x
