How to Add More Punch to an Old Oil Painting 🎨👊

- How many old paintings do you have gathering dust❓ Chances are there are a number of average paintings you could dust off and repaint. In my case I chose an oil painting that had good composition. But I wanted vibrant color. Generally more "visual appeal" or punch❗ So keeping the painting's composition I set about covering it with a new layers of oil paint. The end result? You can see it in this quick painting revamp.

Such gorgeous colors now, a feast for the eyes.
Thanks Terrie, those candy colors 😄
So surprising how it transforms . I think the new painting has more direction and life . Really like the new colors too
Thanks Mary!
Thanks everso, I'm going to,give an older painting some punch, 👍 🥊 from Frances uk ♥️
Go for it!
Thank you, Malcolm. I was going to sand an old painting to re-paint it, but I just learned it is not necessary to sand in order to paint it again. Actually, I sanded an old paint and when I painted over it, I could see some marks and shadows, I did not get a good result then. I will try the way you did from now on.
Thanks Selma, its a good idea to use old panels. Not a fan of sanding so not every old panel is useable if it is very textured, but use what you can.
What a great video, just what I needed !
Excellent, thank you
I think it was an improvement with the more vibrant colours. Nicely done.
Thank you Lawren
Vibrant and full of life, a lot of variety which makes it more interesting :)
Thank you very much!

The vibrant colours and the shadow in the forground made all the different Jytte:o)
Agreed!
I work on old paintings quite often when im thinking about what to paint next. Keeps me painting all the time. Like the newer approach better, more life and vibrancy
Thanks Kathy - yes the old ones are painting prompts for new ones.
Awesome demonstration! I think the choice is clear.
Awesome, thank you!
Hi Malcom I always enjoy yur videos ... Oddly neough I like both verisons of the painting you
just reworked ... might depnd on what I need in a moment ..calm or excitement.
Many thanks, yes there are parts of the old one I like too.
Hello there! I just have an old oil painting that was my grandmothers. I’m sure it was varnished. Could I change some colors with new oil paint or do I have to do something different? Thank you
It should be fine for painting over. Brush off dust before starting any work.
Did you prepare the canvas before you repainted it?
No. Paint directly onto the dry painting. But you can lightly wipe it with linseed oil too if you do not like the dry surface. Make sure you wipe off excess oil though.
Do you have to put anything on the original painting to prepare it?
No, the dry oil paint is perfect for the new layers.
Malcolm Dewey Thank you! I love your videos.
So interesting, guess most of us have paintings which would be improved. (I’m S African originally, am I correct in guessing your accent?)
Thanks Barbara. Yes 🇿🇦
